Iron Core

An iron core is a dense, iron-rich central region within a planet, where extreme pressure and temperature determine matter’s structure and behavior. In Earth, the solid inner core is surrounded by a liquid outer core; heat released during cooling drives convection in the electrically conductive liquid metal, generating the planet’s magnetic field through the geodynamo process. Studying the iron core helps physicists interpret seismic-wave behavior, model planetary formation and thermal evolution, and explain how magnetic fields shield planetary surfaces from charged particles. Laboratory experiments and computational simulations extend this work to the interiors of other rocky planets.

The Nucleosome Core Particle

2020

Nucleosomes are the DNA-histone complex, where the DNA strand is wound around the histone core. The histone core is an octamer containing two copies of H2A, H2B, H3, and H4 histone proteins. The paradox Nucleosomes, paradoxically, perform two opposite functions simultaneously. On the one hand, their main responsibility is to protect the delicate DNA strands from physical damage and help achieve a higher compaction ratio. While on the other hand, they must allow polymerase enzymes to access DNA...
