Volume Stress

Volume stress is the normal force applied uniformly over a material’s surface per unit area, producing a change in its volume and commonly corresponding to pressure. When a fluid or solid experiences equal compressive forces from all directions, the resulting volumetric strain is described by the fractional change in volume, while the bulk modulus relates the applied volume stress to that strain. This concept helps explain compression in fluids and solids, sound propagation, and material behavior under hydrostatic pressure. Measuring volume stress and bulk modulus supports material selection and the analysis of structures, geological systems, and high-pressure experiments.

Le Chatelier's Principle: Changing Volume (Pressure)

2020

For gas-phase equilibria, changes in the concentrations of reactants and products can occur with altered volume and pressure. The partial pressure, P, of an ideal gas is proportional to its molar concentration, M. So changes in the partial pressures of any reactant or product are essentially changes in concentrations; therefore, these changes yield the same effects on equilibria. Aside from adding or removing reactants or products, the pressures (concentrations) of species in a gas-phase...

Constant Volume Calorimetry

2020

Calorimeters are useful to determine the heat released or absorbed by a chemical reaction. Coffee cup calorimeters are designed to operate at constant (atmospheric) pressure and are convenient to measure heat flow (or enthalpy change) accompanying processes that occur in solution at constant pressure. A different type of calorimeter that operates at constant volume, colloquially known as a bomb calorimeter, is used to measure the energy produced by reactions that yield large amounts of heat and...

Modeling Social Stress

2023

Stress negatively affects our quality of life. In particular, some individuals experience social stress when placed in a social environment that they are unfamiliar with or have difficulty adjusting to. Since it is hard to examine mechanisms of social stress in humans, modeling this condition in animals may help scientist in developing new therapies for treating this commonly encountered problem. This science education video begins by discussing the known anatomy and physiology behind stress...

Density and Volume

Density and VolumeDensity and volume are important properties that help us understand the nature of matter. Volume measures the amount of space an object occupies, while density describes how much mass is in a given volume. These concepts explain why some objects float while others sink and how different materials behave in various environments.Science and Engineering Practices (SEP): Developing and Using ModelsYou can explore density and volume by creating models that demonstrate these...
