Concrete consists of a cement paste phase comprised of cement, water, and air, and an aggregate phase comprised of coarse and fine aggregates. These two phases work together to create a durable construction material. The cement paste binds the aggregates together, while the aggregates provide strength and stability to the overall mixture.

The water-to-cement ratio directly determines concrete strength and durability. Concrete strength is customarily measured at 28 days and varies from about 0.35 for high-strength concrete to 0.6 for low-strength concrete. A lower water-to-cement ratio decreases permeability by reducing salt ion penetration, which protects reinforcement from corrosion.

Air bubbles in fresh concrete allow free water to expand during freezing without cracking the material. When water freezes and turns to ice, it expands significantly. The entrained air provides spaces for this expansion, preventing damage. However, higher air content reduces concrete strength, requiring a higher water-to-cement ratio to maintain specified strength levels.

The slump test measures concrete's flowability and consistency before it sets. Fresh concrete is poured into an inverted cone in three layers, then the cone is lifted and the distance the concrete subsides is measured. Results indicate the cohesiveness of the mix; a well-proportioned mix retains its shape while a poor mix crumbles and segregates.

The trial batch method is an empirical approach to determine optimal proportions of aggregates, cement, and water for concrete meeting specified slump requirements. This in situ test ensures that concrete mixture at the batching plant maintains the same viscosity when it arrives at the construction site. It provides simple quality control and assurance at work sites worldwide.

Superplasticizers are chemical additives that reduce concrete viscosity temporarily, allowing higher slumps of 6 to 10 inches for self-leveling concrete. Air-entrainment agents create small, well-dispersed air bubbles providing expansion space during freezing. Air-entrained mixes show 5 to 8% air content depending on additive dosage, compared to below 2% in non-air-entrained mixes.

Fresh concrete workability depends on rheology, water-to-cement ratio, and air content. Long-term strength and durability are influenced by high curing temperature and humidity, which accelerate strength gains. The concrete must be easily castable in forms while achieving specified 28-day strength and providing good serviceability and durability throughout its lifespan.
