循环伏安法 (CV)

Cyclic voltammetry (CV) is an electrochemical technique that applies a potential sweep to a system while measuring the resulting current. The potential is linearly ramped to a switching potential, then reversed back to the starting potential, creating a cyclical sweep. The resulting plot of applied potential versus current, called a voltammogram, reveals key information about the analyte's redox properties and electron transfer reactions.

A CV cell contains three electrodes: the working electrode, where the reaction of interest occurs and is typically made of inert materials like gold or platinum; the counter electrode, which closes the current circuit and is usually a platinum wire; and the reference electrode, which provides a stable, well-known potential for measuring applied potential. Together, they enable controlled electrochemical measurements.

In a CV experiment, the forward potential sweep produces a cathodic peak where the analyte is reduced and gains electrons. The reverse sweep generates an anodic peak where oxidation occurs and electrons are stripped from the products formed during the forward sweep. The shapes and positions of these peaks depend on analyte concentration, scan rate, and experimental conditions.

Prepare 10 mL of electrolyte stock solution and add it to an electrochemical cell with a stir bar. Degas the solution with a gentle nitrogen stream to remove oxygen, which is redox active. Add the analyte of interest to the electrolyte solution and degas again. Prior to scanning, obtain a background scan to verify the solution is not electrochemically active and contains no impurities.

In reversible systems, both reduction and oxidation peaks appear, the ratio of cathodic to anodic current is approximately 1, and mean peak potential is unaffected by scan rate. In irreversible systems, only one peak appears, and peak current is proportional to the square root of scan rate. These differences in voltammogram characteristics reveal the reversibility of electron transfer reactions.

CV is used to measure dopamine oxidation in the brain using microelectrodes for neuroscience research. It monitors the effectiveness of neural recording prosthetics by measuring charge-carrying capacity. CV also tracks electrochemically active bacteria in biofilms grown in bioreactors, determining when reactants are depleted in microbial bioelectrochemical systems for applications like bioremediation.

CV yields information regarding the stability of transition metal oxidation states in complexed forms, the reversibility of electron transfer reactions, and reactivity of analytes. By varying analyte concentration, scan rates, and experimental conditions, CV reveals redox potentials, electron transfer kinetics, and the electrochemical properties essential for understanding supported catalysts using potentiostat measurements and other electroactive species.
