What are Biogeochemical Cycles?

Die Materie, aus der lebende Organismen bestehen, wird zwischen biotischen, lebenden und abiotischen, nicht lebenden, Faktoren in der Umwelt konserviert und recycelt.
 Dieser Prozess wird als biogeochemischer Kreislauf bezeichnet.
 Vier Verbindungen oder Moleküle, Wasser, Kohlenstoff, Stickstoff und Schwefel, haben gasförmige Formen, die sowohl durch das terrestrische als auch das aquatische Ökosystem sowie durch die Atmosphäre zirkulieren und sie zu einem Teil der globalen biogeochemischen Prozesse machen.
 Elemente, die zu schwer sind, um als Gase auftreten zu können, zirkulieren wie Phosphor nur durch das terrestrische und aquatische Ökosystem, einen lokalen biogeochemischen Prozess.
 Sowohl das lokale als auch das globale biogeochemische Recycling werden durch geologische Prozesse wie das Anheben von tektonischen Platten, die Bewitterung und Erosion von Gesteinsablagerungen sowie die Entwässerung von Wasser miteinander verbunden.

was sind biogeochemische kreisläufe?

Die in organischen Molekülen am häufigsten vorkommenden Elemente sind Kohlenstoff, Wasserstoff, Sauerstoff, Stickstoff, Schwefel und Phosphor. Sie sind im Ökosystem nur in begrenzten Mengen verfügbar. Daher müssen diese Nährstoffe durch biotische und abiotische Komponenten des Ökosystems wiederverwertet werden. Diese Prozessen werden allgemein als biogeochemische Kreisläufe bezeichnet.
 
 <h4>Biogeochemische Kreisläufe und der Abbau</h4>
 
 Die Stoffe, aus denen lebende Organismen bestehen, wozu auch Wasser, Kohlenstoff, Stickstoff, Schwefel und Phosphor gehören, existieren in begrenzten Mengen im Ökosystem und müssen daher erhalten bleiben und wiederverwertet werden. Diese Stoffe können eine Vielzahl von chemischen Formen annehmen und längere Zeit in der Atmosphäre, auf dem Land oder unter dem Land und in der aquatischen Umwelt verbringen. Eine Schlüsselkomponente beim Abbau und der Wiederverwertung von Nährstoffen im Ökosystem ist die Zersetzung, die durch Temperatur, Feuchtigkeit und Nährstoffverfügbarkeit beeinflusst wird. Zum Beispiel wird organisches Material in Regenwäldern viel schneller abgebaut als in gemäßigten Zonen, die niedrigere Temperaturen und ein stärker jahreszeitlich bedingtes Klima aufweisen.
 
 <h4>Menschliche Einflüsse</h4>
 
 Menschliche Aktivitäten können auch eine große Rolle in der Veränderung des Gleichgewichts der biogeochemischen Kreisläufe spielen. So erlebte der Eriesee im Jahr 2011 den größten Befall von schädlichen Algenblüten in seiner Geschichte. Dies war eine Folge des landwirtschaftlichen Nutzens von Phosphor über viele Jahre hinweg, verbunden mit Veränderungen der lokalen Wetterbedingungen. Diese exzessiven Nährstoffmengen, die Eutrophierung, förderte das Wachstum von zwei toxischen Arten von Cyanobakterien, Microcystis und Anabaena.

Nutrient recycling in ecosystems keeps the elements needed for life moving through living and nonliving parts of the environment. Elements such as water, carbon, nitrogen, sulfur, and phosphorus are present in limited amounts, so they must be conserved and reused. These movements are called biogeochemical cycles.

These nutrients can exist in several chemical forms. They may spend long periods in the atmosphere, on land, under the land, or in aquatic environments. Decomposition is a key part of this recycling process. It breaks down organic material and returns nutrients to the ecosystem.

Decomposition depends on temperature, moisture, and nutrient availability. In warm, wet places, organic matter usually breaks down faster. For example, rainforest material decomposes more quickly than material in temperate environments, which are cooler and more seasonal.

Human activity can also disrupt these cycles. In Lake Erie, years of phosphorus added through agriculture, along with changes in local weather patterns, helped create the largest harmful algal bloom in the lake’s recorded history in 2011. This nutrient buildup, called eutrophication, supported the growth of toxic cyanobacteria such as Microcystis and Anabaena.
