The Carbon Cycle

Im Kohlenstoffkreislauf wandern Kohlenstoffatome durch das Ökosystem.
 Ausgehend von der Photosynthese wandeln Autotrophen, wie etwa Pflanzen, Kohlenstoff aus der Atmosphäre in Form von Kohlendioxid in verbrauchbare Energie um, die von Heterotrophen aufgenommen wird.
 Diese Organismen können den Kohlenstoff dann durch Atmung in die Atmosphäre oder während der Zersetzung in den Boden zurückführen.
 Kohlendioxid in der Atmosphäre ist auch sehr gut in Wasser löslich, womit die Ozeane ein großes Reservoir an Kohlenstoff sind.
 Kohlendioxid reagiert mit Wasser zu Kohlensäure und bildet dann Karbonationen.
 Kalziumkarbonat im Meerwasser wird zum Aufbau von Korallenskeletten und Weichtierschalen verwendet.
 Kohlenstoff kann auch kurzfristig in den Körpern langlebiger Bäume und im Boden gespeichert werden, oder für eine viel längere Zeit bei fossilen Brennstoffen, den organischen Überresten einst lebender Organismen.
 Schließlich kann der in Sedimenten und Böden der Erdkruste gespeicherte Kohlenstoff zu Magma schmelzen und bei Vulkanausbrüchen in die Atmosphäre abgegeben werden, ein Prozess, der als Entgasung bezeichnet wird.

Die Grundlage aller organischen Materie auf der Erde ist Kohlenstoff, der durch das Ökosystem in zwei Hauptprozessen recycelt wird. In einem wird Kohlenstoff zwischen lebenden Organismen ausgetauscht, während er im zweiten über lange Zeiträume als versteinerte organische Überreste, Verwitterung von Gesteinen und vulkanische Aktivität zirkuliert. Menschliche Aktivitäten wie verstärkter landwirtschaftlicher Anbau und die Verbrennung fossiler Brennstoffe haben das Gleichgewicht des natürlichen Kohlenstoffkreislaufs stark beeinflusst.
 
 <h4>Biologischer Kohlenstoffkreislauf</h4>
 
 Alle Lebewesen sind aus organischen Molekülen zusammengesetzt, die Atome des Elements Kohlenstoff enthalten. Kohlenstoff existiert in der Atmosphäre als Kohlenstoffdioxid-Gas, das mit Wasser zu Bikarbonat reagiert. Während der Fotosynthese wandeln die Primärproduzenten (oder Autotrophen) Kohlenstoffdioxid und Bikarbonat in organische kohlenstoffhaltige Verbindungen, wie z.B. Glukose, um Energie für Wachstum, Erhaltung und andere Prozesse zu erzeugen.
 
 Heterotrophe erhalten organischen Kohlenstoff für Wachstum und Erhaltung durch den Verbrauch von Autotrophen. Durch den Prozess der Zellatmung werden diese organischen Moleküle aufgespalten, um die in ihnen gespeicherte Energie freizusetzen. Die Nebenprodukte dieses Prozesses sind Wasser und Kohlenstoffdioxid, das durch Atmung in die Atmosphäre freigesetzt wird und den Kreislauf fortsetzt.
 
 Kohlenstoff kann auch als tierischer Abfall oder als verrottendes Material von toten Organismen in die Umwelt zurückkehren. Zersetzter, wie Bakterien und Pilze, bauen diese Materialien in Kohlenstoffdioxid und organische Verbindungen ab.
 
 <h4>Langfristige geologische Kreisläufe</h4>
 
 Kohlenstoff wird über längere Zeiträume in der Atmosphäre, in großen Gewässern, in Ozeansedimenten, im Boden, in versteinerten Tierresten und im Erdinneren gespeichert. Kohlenstoffdioxid aus der Atmosphäre löst sich im Wasser des Ozeans und reagiert mit Wassermolekülen und wird in Karbonate umgewandelt. Zusammen mit Kalzium-Ionen bilden diese Karbonate die aus Kalziumkarbonat bestehenden Schalen vieler Meeresorganismen, wie z.B. Korallen und Austern. Wenn diese Organismen sterben, werden ihre Überreste abgebaut und können auf den Meeresboden sinken und allmählich Teil des Sediments werden. Dieses Sediment bildet schließlich Kalkstein, welcher das größte Kohlenstoffreservoir der Erde ist.
 
 Große, langlebige Bäume können auch über Jahrhunderte hinweg Kohlenstoff in sich speichern. Als eine viel längerfristiges Kohlenstoffreservoirs speichern die Überreste von Organismen Kohlenstoff in Form von fossilen Brennstoffen wie Kohle, Erdöl und Erdgas über Millionen von Jahren tief in der Erde. Der tief unter der Erdoberfläche gespeicherte Kohlenstoff kann bei Vulkanausbrüchen wieder an die Oberfläche und in die Atmosphäre zurückgelangen.
 
 <h4>Menschliche Auswirkungen auf den Kohlenstoffkreislauf</h4>
 
 Die Verbrennung von fossilen Brennstoffen und Holz setzt erhebliche Mengen an Kohlenstoffdioxid in der Atmosphäre frei und beeinflusst das globale Klima. Darüber hinaus beeinträchtigen die Abholzung der Wälder und die verstärkten landwirtschaftlichen Praktiken den natürlichen Kohlenstoffkreislauf, indem sie die Menge an organischer Substanz im Boden verringern, die Kohlenstoffspeicherung vermindern und den Gehalt an Treibhausgasen wie Methan in der Atmosphäre erhöhen.

Carbon moves through living systems and Earth over short and long time scales. It is the basis of all organic matter on Earth, and it cycles through ecosystems by passing between organisms and by moving through rocks, oceans, and the atmosphere. Human activities, including farming and burning fossil fuels, have changed this balance.

In the biological carbon cycle, carbon dioxide in the atmosphere reacts with water to form bicarbonate. Primary producers, or autotrophs, use carbon dioxide and bicarbonate during photosynthesis to make organic compounds such as glucose. These carbon-containing molecules support growth, maintenance, and other life processes.

Heterotrophs get organic carbon by eating autotrophs. They break down these molecules during cellular respiration to release stored energy. Water and carbon dioxide are the main byproducts, and the carbon returns to the atmosphere through respiration. Carbon can also leave organisms as waste or as dead matter. Decomposers, such as bacteria and fungi, break this material down and release carbon dioxide and organic compounds back into the environment.

Carbon also moves through long-term geological storage. It can remain in the atmosphere, large water bodies, ocean sediment, soil, fossilized animal remains, and deep inside the Earth for long periods. In the ocean, dissolved carbon dioxide reacts with water and becomes carbonates. These carbonates combine with calcium ions to form calcium carbonate shells in marine organisms such as coral and oysters. When these organisms die, their remains can sink and become part of sediment, which may later form limestone, the largest carbon reservoir on Earth.

Large, long-lived trees can store carbon in their bodies for centuries. On much longer time scales, the remains of organisms become fossil fuels, including coal, petroleum, and natural gas, deep in the Earth. Carbon stored underground can return to the surface and atmosphere during volcanic eruptions. Burning fossil fuels and wood releases large amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, which affects global climate. Deforestation and increased agricultural practices also change the natural carbon cycle by reducing soil organic matter, lowering carbon storage, and raising greenhouse gases such as methane.
