Subatomic Particles

Daltons Atomtheorie führte natürlich zu der Frage, ob die Atome selbst teilbar sind. Das erfolgreichste war das Kernmodell von Ernest Rutherford basierend auf seinem berühmtem Goldfolien-Experiment, bei dem er positiv geladene Alpha-Teilchen auf eine dünne Goldfolie richtete. Da die meisten Alphateilchen die Goldfolie ungelenkt passierten, kam er zu dem Schluss, dass der größte Teil des Raumes innerhalb eines Atoms leer ist.Einige wenige wurden jedoch in großen Winkeln gestreut, und eine kleine Anzahl prallte zurück, was bestätigte, dass sich die gesamte positive Ladung und der größte Teil der Masse eines Atoms in einem winzigen zentralen Kern, dem so genannten Kern, befindet. Rutherford postulierte auch, dass ein Atom genauso viele Elektronen hat, die sich in dem leeren Raum um den Kern befinden, um die positive Ladung des Kerns auszugleichen und die elektrische Neutralität des Atoms aufrechtzuerhalten.

Dalton hatte mit den Teilchen, aus denen Materie besteht, nur teilweise recht. Alle Materie besteht aus Atomen, und Atome bestehen aus drei kleineren subatomaren Teilchen: Protonen, Neutronen und Elektronen. Diese drei Teilchen machen die Masse und die Ladung eines Atoms aus. 
 <h4>Die Entdeckung des Elektrons</h4> 
 Der erste Hinweis auf die subatomare Struktur kam Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts, als J.J. Thomson das Elektron mithilfe einer Kathodenstrahlröhre entdeckte. Dieser Apparat bestand aus einem verschlossenen Glasrohr, aus dem fast die gesamte Luft entfernt worden war und das zwei Metallelektroden enthielt. Wenn Hochspannung an die Elektroden angelegt wurde, erschien zwischen ihnen ein sichtbarer Strahl, der Kathodenstrahl genannt wurde. Dieser Strahl wurde zur positiven Ladung hin und von der negativen Ladung weg abgelenkt und wurde auf die gleiche Weise mit identischen Eigenschaften erzeugt, wenn unterschiedliche Metalle für die Elektroden verwendet wurden. In ähnlichen Experimenten wurde der Strahl gleichzeitig durch ein angelegtes Magnetfeld abgelenkt. Messungen des Ausmaßes der Ablenkung und der magnetischen Feldstärke ermöglichten es Thomson, das Ladung-zu-Masse-Verhältnis der Kathodenstrahlteilchen zu berechnen. Die Ergebnisse dieser Messungen zeigten, dass diese Teilchen viel leichter als Atome waren. Basierend auf seinen Beobachtungen schlug Thomson Folgendes vor: 

 <ul>
 <li>Die Teilchen werden von positiven (+) Ladungen angezogen und von negativen (-) Ladungen abgestoßen, daher müssen sie negativ geladen sein (gleiche Ladungen stoßen sich ab und ungleiche Ladungen ziehen sich an);</li>
 <li>Die Teilchen sind weniger massereich als Atome und unabhängig vom Ausgangsmaterial nicht unterscheidbar, daher müssen sie grundlegende, subatomare Bestandteile aller Atome sein.</li>
</ul>

Thomsons Kathodenstrahlteilchen ist ein Elektron, ein negativ geladenes, subatomares Teilchen mit einer Masse, die mehr als 1000-mal kleiner als die eines Atoms ist. Der Begriff „Elektron“ wurde 1891 vom irischen Physiker George Stoney geprägt, abgeleitet von „elektrisches Ion“.

 Im Jahr 1909 berechnete Robert A. Millikan die Ladung eines Elektrons durch seine „Öltropfen“-Experimente. Millikan erzeugte mikroskopisch kleine Öltröpfchen, die durch Reibung bei ihrer Bildung oder durch den Einsatz von Röntgenstrahlen elektrisch aufgeladen werden konnten. Diese Tröpfchen fielen zunächst aufgrund der Schwerkraft, doch ihre Abwärtsbewegung konnte durch ein elektrisches Feld weiter unten im Gerät verlangsamt oder sogar umgekehrt werden. Durch Anpassen der elektrischen Feldstärke und sorgfältige Messungen und entsprechende Berechnungen konnte Millikan die Ladung einzelner Tropfen auf 1,6 × 10-19 C (Coulomb) bestimmen. Millikan kam zu dem Schluss, dass dieser Wert daher die Grundladung eines einzelnen Elektrons sein muss. Da die Ladung eines Elektrons nun durch Millikans Forschung bekannt war – und das Ladung-zu-Masse-Verhältnis bereits durch Thomsons Forschung bekannt war (1,759 × 1011 C/kg) – wurde die Masse des Elektrons zu 9,107 × 10−31 kg bestimmt.

 <h4>Rutherfords Kernmodell</h4>

 Wissenschaftler hatten nun festgestellt, dass das Atom nicht unteilbar war, wie Dalton geglaubt hatte, und dank der Arbeit von Thomson, Millikan und anderen waren Ladung und Masse der negativen, subatomaren Teilchen – der Elektronen – bekannt. Wissenschaftler wussten, dass die Gesamtladung eines Atoms neutral ist. Allerdings war der positiv geladene Teil eines Atoms noch nicht vollständig verstanden. Im Jahr 1904 schlug Thomson das „Plum Pudding“-Modell der Atome vor, das eine positiv geladene Masse mit einer gleichen Menge negativer Ladung in Form von darin eingebetteten Elektronen beschrieb, da alle Atome elektrisch neutral sind. Ein konkurrierendes Modell wurde 1903 von Hantaro Nagaoka vorgeschlagen, der ein Saturn-ähnliches Atom postulierte, das aus einer positiv geladenen Kugel bestand, die von einem Elektronenhof umgeben war.

 Die nächste große Entwicklung zum Verständnis des Atoms kam von Ernest Rutherford. Er führte eine Reihe von Experimenten mit einem Strahl schneller, positiv geladener Alphateilchen (α-Teilchen) durch, die durch den radioaktiven Zerfall von Radium erzeugt wurden. Er richtete einen Strahl aus α-Partikeln auf ein sehr dünnes Stück Goldfolie und untersuchte die resultierende Streuung der α-Partikel mithilfe eines Leuchtschirms, der kurz aufleuchtete, wenn ein α-Partikel auftraf. Er beobachtete, dass die meisten Partikel die Folie durchdrangen, ohne überhaupt abgelenkt zu werden. Einige wurden jedoch leicht abgelenkt, und eine sehr kleine Anzahl wurde fast direkt zurück zur Quelle abgelenkt. Daraus leitete Rutherford dann Folgendes ab: Da die meisten der sich schnell bewegenden α-Teilchen die Goldatome unabgelenkt passierten, müssen sie durch einen im Wesentlichen leeren Raum im Inneren des Atoms gereist sein. Alphateilchen sind positiv geladen, daher kam es zu Ablenkungen, wenn sie auf eine andere positive Ladung trafen (gleiche Ladungen stoßen sich gegenseitig ab). Da sich gleiche Ladungen gegenseitig abstoßen, müssen die wenigen positiv geladenen α-Teilchen, die abrupt ihre Bahn wechselten, einen anderen Körper getroffen oder sich ihm sehr nahe genähert haben, der ebenfalls eine hochkonzentrierte positive Ladung aufwies. Da die Ablenkungen nur einen kleinen Bruchteil der Zeit auftraten, nahm diese Ladung nur einen kleinen Teil des Raums in der Goldfolie ein. Analyse einer Reihe von Experimenten, Rutherford zog zwei wichtige Schlussfolgerungen:

 <ol>
 <li>Das von einem Atom eingenommene Volumen muss aus einer großen Menge Leerraum bestehen.</li> <li>Im Zentrum jedes Atoms muss sich ein kleiner, relativ schwerer, positiv geladener Körper, der Kern, befinden.</li>
</ol>

Diese Analyse veranlasste Rutherford dazu, ein Modell vorzuschlagen, bei dem ein Atom aus einem sehr kleinen, positiv geladenen Kern besteht, in dem der größte Teil der Masse des Atoms konzentriert ist und der von negativ geladenen Elektronen umgeben ist, sodass das Atom elektrisch neutral ist. Nach vielen weiteren Experimenten entdeckte Rutherford auch, dass die Kerne anderer Elemente den Wasserstoffkern als „Baustein“ enthalten, und er nannte dieses grundlegendere Teilchen das Proton, das positiv geladene, subatomare Teilchen im Kern.

<h4>Die Struktur eines Atoms</h4>

Protonen befinden sich im Atomkern und sind positiv geladen. Die Anzahl der Protonen entspricht der Ordnungszahl im Periodensystem und bestimmt die Identität des Elements. Auch im Kern kommen Neutronen vor. Sie haben keine Ladung, haben aber die gleiche Masse wie Protonen und tragen somit zur Atommasse eines Atoms bei. In Wolken kreisen Elektronen um den Kern. Sie haben eine negative Ladung und eine vernachlässigbare Masse, tragen also zur Gesamtladung eines Atoms bei, nicht jedoch zu seiner Masse.

<h4>Neutronen</h4>

Es war bekannt, dass der Kern fast die gesamte Masse eines Atoms enthält, wobei die Anzahl der Protonen nur die Hälfte oder weniger dieser Masse ausmacht. Es wurden verschiedene Vorschläge gemacht, um zu erklären, was die verbleibende Masse ausmachte, einschließlich der Existenz neutraler Teilchen im Kern. Erst 1932 fand James Chadwick Hinweise auf Neutronen, ungeladene, subatomare Teilchen mit einer Masse, die ungefähr der von Protonen entspricht.

Die Existenz des Neutrons erklärt auch Isotope: Sie unterscheiden sich in der Masse, weil sie eine unterschiedliche Anzahl von Neutronen haben, aber sie sind chemisch identisch, weil sie die gleiche Anzahl von Protonen haben.

<h4>Atommasseneinheit (amu) und die Grundeinheit der Ladung (e)</h4>

Der Kern enthält den Großteil der Masse eines Atoms, da Protonen und Neutronen viel schwerer sind als Elektronen, während Elektronen fast das gesamte Volumen eines Atoms einnehmen. Der Durchmesser eines Atoms liegt in der Größenordnung von 10-10 m, während der Durchmesser des Kerns etwa 10-15 m beträgt – etwa 100.000 Mal kleiner. Atome – und die Protonen, Neutronen und Elektronen, aus denen sie bestehen – sind extrem klein. Beispielsweise wiegt ein Kohlenstoffatom weniger als 2 × 10−23 g und ein Elektron hat eine Ladung von weniger als 2 × 10-19 C. Bei der Beschreibung der Eigenschaften winziger Objekte wie Atome werden entsprechend kleine Maßeinheiten, wie diez Als Einheit der atomaren Masse (amu) und dier Grundeinheit der Ladung (e) werden verwendet. Die Amu wird im Hinblick auf das am häufigsten vorkommende Kohlenstoffisotop definiert, dessen Atomen eine Masse von genau 12 Amu zugeordnet wird. Ein amu entspricht also genau 1/12 der Masse eines Kohlenstoff-12-Atoms: 1 amu = 1,6605 × 10−24 g. Der Dalton (Da) und die einheitliche Atommasseneinheit (u) sind alternative Einheiten, die dem Amu entsprechen.

Die Grundeinheit der Ladung (auch Elementarladung genannt) entspricht der Größe der Ladung eines Elektrons mit e = 1,602 × 10-19 C. Ein Proton hat eine Masse von 1,0073 amu und eine Ladung von 1+. Ein Neutron ist ein etwas schwereres Teilchen mit einer Masse von 1,0087 amu und einer Ladung von Null; Wie der Name schon sagt, ist es neutral. Das Elektron hat eine Ladung von 1− und ist ein viel leichteres Teilchen mit einer Masse von etwa 0,00055 amu. Zur Veranschaulichung: Um die Masse eines Protons zu erreichen, wären etwa 1800 Elektronen erforderlich. Die Eigenschaften dieser Grundteilchen sind in der folgenden Tabelle zusammengefasst.

Atomic structure is built from three subatomic particles: protons, neutrons, and electrons. Atoms make up all matter, and these particles explain an atom’s mass and charge.

The electron was first identified at the end of the 19th century by J.J. Thomson. He used a cathode ray tube, a sealed glass tube with almost all the air removed and two metal electrodes. When high voltage was applied, a visible beam called a cathode ray formed. The beam bent toward positive charge and away from negative charge. It also behaved the same way no matter which metal was used. In related experiments, a magnetic field also deflected the ray. Thomson used these results to calculate a charge-to-mass ratio and showed that the particles were much lighter than atoms. He concluded that the particles were negatively charged, smaller than atoms, and present in all atoms. That particle is now called the electron.

Robert A. Millikan later measured the charge of the electron with his oil drop experiments in 1909. He made tiny oil droplets that could gain charge from friction or X-rays. Gravity pulled the droplets downward, but an electric field could slow them or reverse their motion. From careful measurements, Millikan found a charge of 1.6 × 10−19 C for a single drop. He concluded that this was the charge of one electron. With Thomson’s charge-to-mass ratio and Millikan’s charge value, the mass of the electron was calculated to be 9.107 × 10−31 kg.

These discoveries showed that Dalton’s atom was not indivisible. Scientists also explored how positive charge is arranged in the atom. Thomson proposed the plum pudding model in 1904, where electrons were embedded in a positively charged mass. In 1903, Hantaro Nagaoka suggested a Saturn-like atom with electrons around a positive sphere. Ernest Rutherford later tested the atom with alpha particle scattering. He aimed fast, positively charged alpha particles at thin gold foil and observed them with a glowing screen. Most particles passed through without deflection. Some were turned slightly, and a very small number bounced almost straight back. Rutherford concluded that atoms contain a lot of empty space and that a small, heavy, positively charged nucleus sits at the center.

Rutherford’s model placed most of an atom’s mass in the nucleus and the electrons around it so the atom stayed neutral. He also found that nuclei of other elements contain the hydrogen nucleus as a building block and named that particle the proton. Protons have a positive charge and are found in the nucleus. The number of protons equals the atomic number on the periodic table and identifies the element. Neutrons are also in the nucleus. They have no charge but have about the same mass as protons, so they add to atomic mass. Electrons move in clouds around the nucleus. They have a negative charge and very little mass, so they affect charge more than mass.

James Chadwick provided evidence for neutrons in 1932. Neutrons are uncharged subatomic particles with a mass similar to protons. Their discovery helped explain isotopes. Isotopes have different masses because they have different numbers of neutrons, but they are chemically identical because they have the same number of protons.

Atoms are extremely small, so chemists use smaller units such as the atomic mass unit, or amu, and the fundamental unit of charge, e. The nucleus is about 100,000 times smaller in diameter than the atom, but it contains most of the mass because protons and neutrons are much heavier than electrons. One amu is defined as 1/12 of the mass of a carbon-12 atom, and 1 amu equals 1.6605 × 10−24 g. The fundamental charge equals the charge of an electron, 1.602 × 10−19 C. A proton has a mass of 1.0073 amu and a charge of 1+. A neutron has a mass of 1.0087 amu and a charge of 0. An electron has a mass of about 0.00055 amu and a charge of 1−. About 1800 electrons have the mass of one proton.
