The Periodic Table

Alle Metalle sind bei Raumtemperatur fest, mit Ausnahme von Quecksilber, das flüssig ist.Metalle sind glänzend, und sie können zu Blechen gehämmert und zu Drähten gezogen werden. Metalle, wie Kalium, neigen dazu, Elektronen zu verlieren und Kationen, positiv geladene Ionen, zu bilden, wenn sie mit anderen Elementen reagieren. Nichtmetalle sind auf der rechten Seite des Periodensystems gruppiert und in der Regel schlechte Wärme-und Elektrizitätsleiter.Bei Raumtemperatur sind einige von ihnen fest, während andere Flüssigkeiten oder Gase sind. Nichtmetalle neigen dazu, Elektronen zu gewinnen und Anionen, negativ geladene Ionen, zu bilden, wenn sie mit anderen Elementen reagieren. Metalloide sind Elemente, die sich entlang der Trennlinie zwischen Metall und Nichtmetallen befinden.Sie stellen die kleinste Klasse von Elementen dar und weisen gemischte Eigenschaften auf. Alle Metalloide existieren bei Raumtemperatur als Feststoffe. Einige von ihnen, z.B.Silizium und Germanium, wirken als Halbleiter, d.h. im Gegensatz zu Metallen leiten sie Elektrizität besser, wenn die Temperatur steigt. Bei Raumtemperatur existieren alle Metalloide als Feststoffe.Die Elemente des Periodensystems werden oft auch nach ihrer Position in drei Kategorien eingeteilt:die Elemente der Hauptgruppe, die Übergangsmetalle und die inneren Übergangsmetalle, die auch als Lanthaniden und Aktiniden für das erste Element der Serie in jeder Reihe bekannt sind.

Als frühe Chemiker weitere Elemente entdeckten, erkannten sie, dass verschiedene Elemente aufgrund ihres ähnlichen chemischen Verhaltens in Gruppen eingeteilt werden konnten. Eine dieser Gruppen umfasst Lithium (Li), Natrium (Na) und Kalium (K). Alle diese Elemente sind glänzend, leiten Wärme und Strom gut und haben ähnliche chemische Eigenschaften. Eine zweite Gruppe umfasst Kalzium (Ca), Strontium (Sr) und Barium (Ba), die ebenfalls glänzend sind, gute Wärme- und Stromleiter sind und gemeinsame chemische Eigenschaften haben. Die spezifischen Eigenschaften dieser beiden Gruppierungen unterscheiden sich jedoch deutlich voneinander. Beispielsweise sind Li, Na und K viel reaktiver als Ca, Sr und Ba. Darüber hinaus bilden Li, Na und K Verbindungen mit Sauerstoff in einem Verhältnis von zwei ihrer Atome zu einem Sauerstoffatom, während Ca, Sr und Ba Verbindungen mit einem ihrer Atome zu einem Sauerstoffatom bilden. Fluor (F), Chlor (Cl), Brom (Br) und Jod (I) weisen ebenfalls ähnliche Eigenschaften auf, diese Eigenschaften unterscheiden sich jedoch drastisch von denen der oben genannten Elemente. Dimitri Mendelejew in Russland (1869) und Lothar Meyer in Deutschland (1870) erkannten unabhängig voneinander einen periodischen Zusammenhang zwischen den Eigenschaften der damals bekannten Elemente. Beide veröffentlichten Tabellen mit den Elementen nach zunehmender Atommasse geordnet. Allerdings ging Mendelejew noch einen Schritt weiter als Meyer; Er nutzte seine Tabelle, um die Existenz von Elementen vorherzusagen, die ähnliche Eigenschaften wie Aluminium und Silizium hätten, aber noch nicht bekannt waren. Die Entdeckungen von Gallium (1875) und Germanium (1886) unterstützten Mendelejews Arbeit maßgeblich. Obwohl Mendelejew und Meyer lange über die Priorität stritten, werden Mendelejews Beiträge zur Entwicklung des Periodensystems heute allgemein anerkannt. Im 20. Jahrhundert wurde klar, dass es sich bei der periodischen Beziehung eher um Ordnungszahlen als um Atommassen handelte. Die moderne Aussage dieser Beziehung, das Periodengesetz, besagt Folgendes: Die Eigenschaften der Elemente sind periodische Funktionen ihrer Ordnungszahlen. Ein modernes Periodensystem ordnet die Elemente in aufsteigender Reihenfolge ihrer Ordnungszahlen und gruppiert Atome mit ähnlichen Eigenschaften in derselben vertikalen Spalte. Jedes Kästchen stellt ein Element dar und enthält seine Ordnungszahl, sein Symbol, seine durchschnittliche Atommasse und (manchmal) seinen Namen.  Die Elemente sind in sieben horizontalen Reihen, sogenannten Perioden oder Reihen, und 18 vertikalen Spalten, sogenannten Gruppen, angeordnet. Gruppen sind oben in jeder Spalte beschriftet. Damit die Tabelle auf eine einzelne Seite passt, werden normalerweise Teile von zwei Zeilen, also insgesamt 14 Spalten, unter den Hauptteil der Tabelle geschrieben. Viele Elemente unterscheiden sich erheblich in ihren chemischen und physikalischen Eigenschaften, einige Elemente ähneln sich jedoch in ihrem Verhalten. Viele Elemente sehen beispielsweise glänzend aus, sind formbar und duktil und leiten Wärme und Strom gut. Andere Elemente sind nicht glänzend, formbar oder duktil und leiten Wärme und Elektrizität schlecht. Die Elemente können in große Klassen mit gemeinsamen Eigenschaften eingeteilt werden: Metalle (glänzende, formbare Elemente, gute Wärme- und Stromleiter – gelb schattiert); Nichtmetalle (Elemente, die matt erscheinen und schlechte Wärme- und Stromleiter sind – rot schattiert); und Metalloide (Elemente, die Wärme und Elektrizität mäßig gut leiten und einige Eigenschaften von Metallen und einige Eigenschaften von Nichtmetallen besitzen – violett schattiert). <img alt="Figure1" src="https://www.jove.com/files/core/CDNSource/lessons/806/806_Image_1_white.png" style="width: 700px;"> Die Elemente können auch in den Hauptgruppenelementen (oder repräsentativen Elementen) in den Spalten mit den Bezeichnungen 1, 2 und 13–18 klassifiziert werden; die Übergangsmetalle in den Spalten mit der Bezeichnung 3–12; und innere Übergangsmetalle in den beiden Zeilen unten in der Tabelle. Die Elemente können nach spezifischeren Eigenschaften weiter unterteilt werden, beispielsweise nach der Zusammensetzung der Verbindungen, die sie bilden. Beispielsweise bilden die Elemente in Gruppe 1 (erste Spalte) Verbindungen, die aus einem Atom des Elements und einem Atom Wasserstoff bestehen. Diese Elemente (außer Wasserstoff) werden als Alkalimetalle bezeichnet und haben alle ähnliche chemische Eigenschaften. Die Elemente in Gruppe 2 (zweite Spalte) bilden Verbindungen, die aus einem Atom des Elements und zwei Atomen Wasserstoff bestehen: Diese werden Erdalkalimetalle genannt und haben bei Mitgliedern dieser Gruppe ähnliche Eigenschaften.  Andere Gruppen mit spezifischen Namen sind die Pniktogene (Gruppe 15), Chalkogene (Gruppe 16), Halogene (Gruppe 17) und die Edelgase (Gruppe 18, auch als Inertgase bekannt). Die Gruppen können auch mit dem ersten Element der Gruppe bezeichnet werden: Beispielsweise können die Chalkogene als Sauerstoffgruppe oder Sauerstofffamilie bezeichnet werden. Wasserstoff ist ein einzigartiges, nichtmetallisches Element mit ähnlichen Eigenschaften wie Elemente der Gruppe 1 und 17. Aus diesem Grund kann Wasserstoff an der Spitze beider Gruppen oder allein angezeigt werden. Element 43 (Technetium), Element 61 (Promethium) und die meisten Elemente mit der Ordnungszahl 84 (Polonium) und höher Die Atommasse ist in eckigen Klammern angegeben. Dies geschieht für Elemente, die ausschließlich aus instabilen, radioaktiven Isotopen bestehen (die Radioaktivität wird im Kapitel Kernchemie ausführlicher behandelt). Für diese Elemente kann kein durchschnittliches Atomgewicht bestimmt werden, da ihre Radioisotope je nach Quelle in der relativen Häufigkeit erheblich variieren können oder möglicherweise gar nicht in der Natur vorkommen. The periodic table organizes elements by repeating patterns in their properties. Chemists first noticed that some elements behaved alike, so they grouped them by chemical behavior. Lithium, sodium, and potassium are one example. They are shiny and conduct heat and electricity well. Calcium, strontium, and barium form another group with similar physical and chemical properties. Yet these two groups are not the same. The lithium group is much more reactive, and its elements form oxygen compounds in a 2-to-1 atom ratio. The calcium group is less reactive, and its elements form oxygen compounds in a 1-to-1 atom ratio. Fluorine, chlorine, bromine, and iodine also share similar properties, but those properties are very different from the metal groups above.

Dimitri Mendeleev in Russia and Lothar Meyer in Germany both recognized this repeating pattern in the elements in the 1860s and 1870s. They arranged the known elements by increasing atomic mass. Mendeleev went further by predicting elements that had not yet been discovered. He expected elements with properties similar to aluminum and silicon. Later, gallium and germanium were discovered, and they supported his work. Mendeleev and Meyer later disputed who deserved priority, but Mendeleev is now more widely recognized for helping develop the periodic table.

By the twentieth century, scientists saw that the pattern depends on atomic number, not atomic mass. The periodic law says that the properties of the elements change in a repeating way as atomic number increases. A modern periodic table follows this rule. It places elements in order of increasing atomic number and groups elements with similar properties in the same vertical column.

Each box on the periodic table shows one element. It usually includes the atomic number, symbol, average atomic mass, and sometimes the name. The table has seven horizontal rows, called periods, and 18 vertical columns, called groups. The group labels appear at the top. To fit the table on one page, parts of two rows are often shown below the main table. These 14 columns belong to the lanthanides and actinides.

Elements can also be sorted by their physical properties. Metals are shiny, malleable, and ductile, and they conduct heat and electricity well. Nonmetals are usually dull and are poor conductors. Metalloids fall between these two groups. They conduct heat and electricity moderately well and have some properties of metals and some of nonmetals. The table also separates main-group elements in columns 1, 2, and 13 through 18, transition metals in columns 3 through 12, and inner transition metals in the two rows at the bottom.

Some groups have special names based on their chemistry. Group 1 elements, except hydrogen, are alkali metals. They form compounds with one atom of the element and one atom of hydrogen. Group 2 elements are alkaline earth metals, and they form compounds with one atom of the element and two atoms of hydrogen. Other named groups include the pnictogens, chalcogens, halogens, and noble gases. The chalcogens are also called the oxygen family. Hydrogen is unusual because it is a nonmetal with properties similar to both group 1 and group 17. It may appear at the top of either group or by itself.

Some elements have atomic masses shown in square brackets. This includes element 43, technetium, element 61, promethium, and most elements with atomic number 84 and higher, such as polonium. These elements are made entirely of unstable, radioactive isotopes. Because their isotopes can vary in abundance or may not occur naturally, an average atomic weight cannot be given. The bracketed value is the mass number of the most stable isotope, which is an approximate atomic mass.
