In der Natur besteht jede Materie aus chemischen Grundeinheiten, die als Elemente mit spezifischen physikalischen und chemischen Eigenschaften bezeichnet werden. Das Periodensystem listet insgesamt 118 bisher identifizierte Elemente auf. Die gemeinsame Einheit jedes Elements ist das Atom.Einige Elemente wie Helium, Neon, Silber oder Platin existieren als Einheiten von unabhängigen einzelnen Atomen. Andere Elemente wie Wasserstoff, Sauerstoff oder Schwefel existieren als Einheiten von zwei oder mehr identischen Atomen. Diese Mehrfach-Atome werden durch starke elektrostatische Kräfte, die als chemische Bindungen bezeichnet werden, zusammengehalten und bilden stabile Einheiten, die Moleküle genannt werden.Zusätzlich können sich auch zwei oder mehr verschiedene Elemente zu Molekülen verbinden, wie z. B.Wasser oder Fruktose. Solche Moleküle, die durch die Kombination von Atomen von zwei oder mehr Elementen gebildet werden, die chemisch in einem festen Verhältnis miteinander verbunden sind, werden auch als Verbindungen bezeichnet.Daher sind auch Wasser-und Fruktosemoleküle Verbindungen. Wasser ist ein Molekül, das aus zwei Atomen Wasserstoff und einem Atom Sauerstoff besteht. Im Gegensatz dazu ist Fruktose ein Molekül, das sechs Kohlenstoffatome, zwölf Wasserstoffatome und sechs Sauerstoffatome enthält.Die einzelnen Atome innerhalb einer Verbindung werden durch chemische Bindungen zusammengehalten, was die Art der gebildeten Verbindung bestimmt, z. B.eine molekulare oder ionische Verbindung. Kovalente Molekülverbindungen bilden sich wie Wasser, wenn Nichtmetallatome zusammenkommen und ihre Valenzelektronen über eine kovalente Bindung teilen.Die gemeinsamen Elektronen zwischen zwei Atomen senken die potentielle Energie und erzeugen stabilere Moleküle im Vergleich zu den einzelnen Atomen. Ionische Verbindungen, wie Natriumchlorid, entstehen, wenn Metall-und Nichtmetallatome zusammenkommen. Metalle verlieren leicht Elektronen, und werden dabei zu Kationen, während Nichtmetalle leicht Elektronen gewinnen, und dabei Anionen werden.So übertragen Metallatome Elektronen auf Nichtmetallatome und die elektrostatischen Wechselwirkungen zwischen den entgegengesetzt geladenen Ionen bilden ionische Bindungen. Die Fähigkeit der Elemente, Verbindungen zu bilden, trägt zur großen Vielfalt der Materie bei, die in der Natur existiert.

<h4>Atome und Moleküle</h4> Alles im Universum besteht aus Materie, und Materie besteht aus einer Kombination von Elementen. Ein Atom ist die kleinste Einheit eines Elements, die alle Eigenschaften des Elements behält. Beispielsweise besteht eine Silbermünze aus Silberatomen, und jedes Silberatom behält die einzigartigen Eigenschaften des Elements – Silber. Elemente sind reine Stoffe, die aus identischen Atomen bestehen und nicht durch chemische Veränderungen in einfachere Stoffe zerlegt werden können. Atomare Elemente enthalten als Grundeinheit einzelne Atome. Kohlenstoff besteht aus Kohlenstoffatomen und Natrium besteht aus Natriumatomen. Die meisten Elemente sind atomare Elemente. Es gibt jedoch einige Elemente, die als Kombination von Atomen existieren und in der Natur nie als einzelne Atome vorkommen. Diese werden molekulare Elemente genannt. Molekulare Elemente bestehen aus Molekülen mit zwei oder mehr miteinander verbundenen Atomen. Sie können zweiatomig sein, wie Wasserstoff (H2), Sauerstoff (O2) oder Chlorgas (Cl2), oder mehratomig, wie Schwefel (S8) und Phosphor (P4). Ein Molekül besteht aus zwei oder mehr Atomen, die durch starke Kräfte, sogenannte chemische Bindungen, verbunden sind. Ein Molekül kann aus zwei oder mehr identischen Atomen oder aus zwei oder mehr unterschiedlichen Atomen bestehen. Wenn das Molekül aus Atomen von zwei oder mehr verschiedenen Elementen besteht, die in festen ganzzahligen Verhältnissen kombiniert sind, ist das Molekül ebenfalls eine Verbindung. Wasser ist beispielsweise eine Verbindung und jedes Wassermolekül (H2O) ist eine Einheit, die zwei Wasserstoffatome und ein Sauerstoffatom enthält. Das Molekül Glucose (C6H12O6) ist ebenfalls eine Verbindung, die sechs Kohlenstoffatome, zwölf Wasserstoffatome und sechs Sauerstoffatome enthält. Verbindungen sind reine Stoffe, die aus zwei oder mehr Elementen in festen, bestimmten Verhältnissen bestehen. Verbindungen werden anhand der vorhandenen Bindungen in molekulare oder ionische Verbindungen eingeteilt. <h4>Verbindungen</h4> Die Art der Anziehungskräfte, die Atome innerhalb einer Verbindung zusammenhalten, entscheidet über die Art der gebildeten chemischen Bindung. Der vollständige Elektronentransfer zwischen einem Metallatom und einem Nichtmetallatom führt zur Bildung entgegengesetzt geladener Ionen. Die elektrostatische Anziehung zwischen den Ionen wird als Ionenbindung bezeichnet, und die durch Ionenbindungen gebildeten Verbindungen sind ionische Verbindungen. Beispielsweise ist Natriumchlorid NaCl eine ionische Verbindung. Die gemeinsame Nutzung von Elektronen zwischen zwei oder mehr Nichtmetallatomen führt zu kovalenten Bindungen, und die durch kovalente Bindungen gebildeten Verbindungen werden kovalente oder molekulare Verbindungen genannt. Kovalente Bindungen sind die Anziehungskräfte zwischen den positiv geladenen Kernen der gebundenen Atome und den negativ geladenen Elektronen, die sich die Atome teilen. Matter is made of elements, and elements are built from atoms. An atom is the smallest unit of an element that still keeps that element’s properties. A silver coin, for example, is made of silver atoms. Each atom keeps the unique properties of silver.

Elements are pure substances made of identical atoms. They cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical changes. Most elements are atomic elements, which use single atoms as their basic unit. Carbon and sodium are examples of atomic elements.

Some elements do not occur as single atoms in nature. These are called molecular elements. They exist as molecules made of two or more bonded atoms. Some are diatomic, such as hydrogen (H2), oxygen (O2), and chlorine (Cl2). Others are polyatomic, such as sulfur (S8) and phosphorous (P4).

A molecule is a group of two or more atoms joined by strong chemical bonds. The atoms in a molecule may be the same, or they may be different. When a molecule contains atoms from two or more different elements in fixed whole number ratios, it is also a compound. Water is a compound, and each H2O molecule has two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. Glucose (C6H12O6) is another compound, with six carbon atoms, twelve hydrogen atoms, and six oxygen atoms.

Compounds are pure substances made of two or more elements in fixed, definite proportions. They are classified as molecular or ionic based on the bonds they contain. The kind of attraction between atoms determines the bond type. When electrons transfer completely from a metal atom to a nonmetal atom, oppositely charged ions form. The electrostatic attraction between those ions is an ionic bond, and the result is an ionic compound such as sodium chloride (NaCl). When two or more nonmetal atoms share electrons, they form covalent bonds. Compounds formed this way are covalent, or molecular, compounds.
