Chemical Formulas

Chemical compounds are substances composed of two or more elements in specific proportions. To accurately describe these compounds chemical formulas were developed.&nbsp;

The chemical formula provides information about the elements and the number of ions or atoms involved. Elements are depicted by their chemical symbol, while the relative number of ions or atoms is indicated with a subscript number.&nbsp;

For example, table sugar or sucrose is a compound containing the elements carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen &ndash; represented using their symbols C, H, and O.&nbsp;The numbers 12, 22, and 11 indicate the total numbers of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms present within the compound.

In general, elements are not listed in alphabetical order, but rather starting with more positively charged, or metallic elements, followed by more negatively charged, or less metallic elements, like potassium hydroxide.&nbsp;

Chemical formulas are categorized as molecular, empirical, and structural.

Molecular formulas describe a compound by listing each element and the exact number of atoms present. The molecular formula of glucose is C6H12O6, meaning glucose is composed of six carbon, twelve hydrogen, and six oxygen atoms.

The empirical formula displays the simplest whole-number ratio of atoms of elements present. In glucose, the simplest ratio of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms is 1:2:1 &mdash; giving it the empirical formula CH2O.

The molecular formula of a compound is also a whole-number multiple of its empirical formula. In glucose, the multiplication of its empirical formula with the whole-number six gives its molecular formula.

In contrast, the structural formula presents the relationship between the individual atoms graphically. The chemical symbols depict atoms, and short-lines denote chemical bonds. Single lines represent single bonds while two and three lines characterize double and triple bonds, respectively.

Extended models of the structural formula such as perspective drawing, ball-and-stick model, or the space-filling model, provide various three-dimensional perspectives about the molecular shape.

Amongst the three chemical formulas, a structural formula provides the most information about the chemical material, followed by the molecular formula. The empirical formula is the least informative.

A chemical formula presents information about the proportions of atoms constituting a particular chemical compound or molecule, mainly using symbols of elements and numbers. At times other symbols, such as dashes, parentheses, brackets, commas, plus, and minus signs, are also used. A chemical formula can be one of three types &ndash; molecular, empirical, and structural.

<h4>Molecular Formula</h4>

The molecular formula represents a molecule or a chemical compound using chemical symbols (to indicate the types of atoms) and subscript-numbers (to show the number of atoms of each type in the molecule). Molecular formulas are also used as abbreviations for the names of compounds.

Some elements consist of discrete, individual atoms, like the noble gases helium, neon, and argon. Such elements are called monatomic gases and have molecular formulas He, Ne and Ar, respectively. Few elements exist as molecules made up of two or more chemically bonded atoms of the same element. For example, elements such as hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen exist as diatomic molecules containing two atoms each and thus have the molecular formulas H2, O2, and N2, respectively. Similarly, elements such as phosphorus and sulfur exist as polyatomic molecules with molecular formulas P4 and S8, respectively.&nbsp;

It is important to note that a subscript following a symbol and a number in front of a symbol does not represent the same thing; for example, H2 and 2H represent distinctly different species. H2 is a molecular formula; it represents a diatomic molecule of hydrogen, consisting of two atoms of the element that are chemically bonded together. The expression 2H, on the other hand, indicates two separate hydrogen atoms that are not combined as a unit. The expression 2H2 represents two molecules of diatomic hydrogen.

<h4>Empirical Formula</h4>

Compounds are formed when two or more elements chemically combine, resulting in the formation of bonds. For example, hydrogen and oxygen can react to form water, and sodium and chlorine can react to form sodium chloride or table salt. We sometimes describe the composition of these compounds with an empirical formula, which indicates the types of atoms present and the simplest whole-number ratio of the number of atoms (or ions) in the compound. For example, titanium dioxide (used as a pigment in white paint and in the thick, white, blocking type of sunscreen) has an empirical formula of TiO2. This identifies the elements titanium (Ti) and oxygen (O) as the constituents of titanium dioxide and indicates the presence of twice as many atoms of the element oxygen as atoms of the element titanium.

In many cases, the molecular formula of a substance is derived from an experimental determination of both its empirical formula and its molecular mass (the sum of atomic masses for all atoms composing the molecule). For example, it can be determined experimentally that benzene contains two elements, carbon (C) and hydrogen (H), and that for every carbon atom in benzene, there is one hydrogen atom. Thus, the empirical formula is CH. An experimental determination of the molecular mass reveals that a molecule of benzene contains six carbon atoms and six hydrogen atoms, so the molecular formula for benzene is C6H6.

<h4>Structural Formula</h4>

The structural formula for a compound gives the same information as its molecular formula (the types and numbers of atoms in the molecule) but also shows how the atoms are connected in the molecule. In other words, the structural formula represents the molecular structure of a compound graphically. It shows the probable arrangement of the atoms and how the atoms are connected in real three-dimensional space, giving more information about the molecular geometry. Lines are used to represent bonds present between the atoms. The formula may also depict the approximate bond angles, giving a sense of the molecule&rsquo;s shape.&nbsp;

Chemical formulas show the types and proportions of atoms in a compound or molecule. They use element symbols and numbers. Some formulas also use dashes, parentheses, brackets, commas, plus signs, and minus signs.

A molecular formula shows a molecule or compound with chemical symbols and subscript numbers. The symbols tell which atoms are present, and the subscripts show how many of each atom are in the molecule. Molecular formulas can also serve as short names for compounds.

Some elements exist as separate atoms. The noble gases helium, neon, and argon are monatomic gases, so their molecular formulas are He, Ne, and Ar. Other elements form molecules with two or more bonded atoms of the same element. Hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen are diatomic and have the formulas H2, O2, and N2. Phosphorus and sulfur are polyatomic and have the formulas P4 and S8.

It is important to tell the difference between a subscript and a number in front of a symbol. H2 means one diatomic hydrogen molecule. The expression 2H means two separate hydrogen atoms. The expression 2H2 means two hydrogen molecules.

An empirical formula shows the types of atoms present and the simplest whole-number ratio of those atoms or ions in a compound. Compounds form when two or more elements chemically combine and make bonds. Water and sodium chloride are common examples of compounds. Titanium dioxide has the empirical formula TiO2, which shows titanium and oxygen and means there are twice as many oxygen atoms as titanium atoms.

In many cases, a molecular formula is found from the empirical formula and the molecular mass. Molecular mass is the sum of the atomic masses of all atoms in a molecule. Benzene is one example. Experiments show that benzene contains carbon and hydrogen in a 1:1 ratio, so its empirical formula is CH. Its molecular mass shows that one molecule contains six carbon atoms and six hydrogen atoms, so its molecular formula is C6H6.

A structural formula gives the same atom count information as a molecular formula, but it also shows how the atoms are connected. It draws the molecular structure in a way that helps show the probable arrangement of atoms in three-dimensional space. Lines represent bonds between atoms. Structural formulas may also show approximate bond angles, which gives a sense of molecular shape.
