Ionic Bonding and Electron Transfer

Verbindungen, die aus Ionen bestehen, werden ionische Verbindungen (oder Salze) genannt und ihre Ionenbestandteile werden durch ionische Bindungen zusammengehalten: elektrostatische Anziehungskräfte zwischen entgegengesetzt geladenen Kationen und Anionen.  <h4>Eigenschaften ionischer Verbindungen</h4> Die Eigenschaften ionischer Verbindungen geben Aufschluss über die Natur ionischer Bindungen. <ul> <li>Ionische Feststoffe weisen eine kristalline Struktur auf und neigen dazu, starr und spröde zu sein; Sie neigen auch dazu, hohe Schmelz- und Siedepunkte zu haben, ein Hinweis darauf, dass die Ionenbindungen sehr stark sind. </li> <li>Aus dem gleichen Grund sind ionische Festkörper auch schlechte Stromleiter – die Stärke der Ionenbindungen verhindert, dass sich Ionen im Festkörper frei bewegen können. </li> <li>Die meisten ionischen Feststoffe lösen sich jedoch leicht in Wasser. Einmal gelöst oder geschmolzen, sind ionische Verbindungen hervorragende Strom- und Wärmeleiter, da sich die Ionen frei bewegen können.</li> </ul> <h4>Die Bildung ionischer Verbindungen</h4> Viele metallische Elemente haben relativ niedrige Ionisierungspotentiale und geben leicht Elektronen ab. Diese Elemente liegen links in einer Periode oder am unteren Ende einer Gruppe im Periodensystem. Nichtmetallatome haben relativ hohe Elektronenaffinitäten und nehmen daher leicht Elektronen auf, die von Metallatomen verloren gehen, und füllen so ihre Valenzschalen auf. Nichtmetallische Elemente finden Sie in der oberen rechten Ecke des Periodensystems. Da alle Stoffe elektrisch neutral sein müssen, muss die Gesamtzahl der positiven Ladungen auf den Kationen einer ionischen Verbindung der Gesamtzahl der negativen Ladungen auf ihren Anionen entsprechen. Die Formel einer ionischen Verbindung stellt das einfachste Verhältnis der Anzahl der Ionen dar, die erforderlich ist, um eine identische Anzahl positiver und negativer Ladungen zu ergeben.  <h4>Ionische Verbindungen bilden regelmäßig angeordnete dreidimensionale Strukturen</h4> Es ist jedoch wichtig zu beachten, dass die Formel einer ionischen Verbindung nicht die physikalische Anordnung ihrer Ionen wiedergibt. Es ist falsch, vom „Molekül“ Natriumchlorid (NaCl) zu sprechen, da zwischen einem bestimmten Paar von Natrium- und Chloridionen keine einzige Ionenbindung per se besteht. Die Anziehungskräfte zwischen Ionen sind isotrop – in allen Richtungen gleich – was bedeutet, dass jedes bestimmte Ion von allen benachbarten Ionen mit entgegengesetzter Ladung gleichermaßen angezogen wird. Dadurch ordnen sich die Ionen zu einer eng verbundenen, dreidimensionalen Gitterstruktur an. Natriumchlorid beispielsweise besteht aus einer regelmäßigen Anordnung gleich vieler Na+ Kationen und Cl– Anionen. Die starke elektrostatische Anziehung zwischen Na+ und Cl– Ionen hält sie in festem NaCl starr zusammen. Es erfordert 769 kJ Energie, um ein Mol festes NaCl in separate gasförmige Na+ und Cl– Ionen zu dissoziieren.  <h4>Elektronische Strukturen von Kationen</h4> Bei der Bildung eines Kations verlieren die Atome der Hauptgruppenelemente tendenziell all ihre Valenzelektronen und nehmen so die elektronische Struktur des ihnen im Periodensystem vorangehenden Edelgases an.  <ul> <li>Für die Gruppen 1 (die Alkalimetalle) und 2 (die Erdalkalimetalle) sind die Gruppennummern gleich der Anzahl der Valenzschalenelektronen und folglich gleich den Ladungen der Kationen, die aus Atomen dieser Elemente gebildet werden wenn alle vorhandenen Valenzschalenelektronen entfernt werden. </li> <li>Beispielsweise ist Kalzium ein Element der Gruppe 2, dessen Atome im Grundzustand 20 Elektronen und eine Elektronenkonfiguration von 1s22s22p63s23p64s2 haben. Wenn ein Ca Atom beide Valenzelektronen verliert, entsteht ein Kation mit 18 Elektronen, einer 2+ Ladung und einer Elektronenkonfiguration von 1s22s22p63s23p6. Das Ca2+ Ion ist daher isoelektronisch mit dem Edelgas Ar.</li> <li>Für die Gruppen 13–17 übersteigen die Gruppenzahlen die Zahl der Valenzelektronen um 10 (was die vollständigen d-Unterschalen in Atomen von Elementen in der vierten und größeren Perioden erklärt). Somit ist die Ladung eines Kations, das durch den Verlust aller Valenzelektronen entsteht, gleich der Gruppenzahl minus 10. Beispielsweise bildet Aluminium (in Gruppe 13) 3+ Ionen (Al3+).</li> </ul> <h4>Ausnahmen</h4> <ul> <li>Ausnahmen vom erwarteten Verhalten betreffen Elemente am unteren Ende der Gruppen. </li> <li>Zusätzlich zu den erwarteten Ionen Tl3+, Sn4+, Pb4+ und Bi5+ kann ein teilweiser Verlust der Valenzschalenelektronen dieser Atome auch zur Bildung von Tl+, Sn2+, Pb2+ und Bi3+ Ionen führen. Die Bildung dieser 1+, 2+, und 3+ Kationen wird dem Inertpaareffekt zugeschrieben, der die relativ niedrige Energie des Valenz-s-Elektronenpaars für Atome der schweren Elemente der Gruppen 13, 14 und 15 widerspiegelt. </li> <li>Quecksilber (Gruppe 12) zeigt ebenfalls ein unerwartetes Verhalten: Es bildet zusätzlich zum erwarteten einatomigen Ion Hg2+ (das aus nur einem Quecksilberatom besteht) ein zweiatomiges Ion, Hg22+ (ein aus zwei Quecksilberatomen gebildetes Ion mit einer Hg-Hg-Bindung).</li> <li>Übergangs- und innere Übergangsmetallelemente verhalten sich anders als die Hauptgruppenelemente. Die meisten Übergangsmetallkationen haben 2+ oder 3+ Ladungen, die zuerst aus dem Verlust ihres äußersten s-Elektrons resultieren und in manchen Fällen vom Verlust von einem oder zwei d-Elektronen aus der zweitäußersten Schale gefolgt werden.</li> <li>Obwohl die d-Orbitale der Übergangselemente nach dem Aufbau-Prinzip der Elektronenkonfigurationen als letzte gefüllt werden, gehen bei der Ionisierung dieser Atome als erstes die äußersten s-Elektronen verloren. Wenn die inneren Übergangsmetalle Ionen bilden, besitzen sie normalerweise eine 3+ Ladung, die aus dem Verlust ihrer äußersten s-Elektronen und eines d- oder f-Elektrons resultiert.</li> </ul> <h4>Elektronische Strukturen von Anionen</h4> Die meisten einatomigen Anionen entstehen, wenn ein neutrales Nichtmetallatom genügend Elektronen aufnimmt, um seine äußeren s- und p-Orbitale vollständig zu füllen um dabei die Elektronenkonfiguration des nächsten Edelgases zu erreichen. Daher ist es einfach, die Ladung eines solchen negativen Ions vorherzusagen: Die Ladung ist gleich der Anzahl der Elektronen, die gewonnen werden müssen, um die s- und p-Orbitale des ursprünglichen Atoms zu füllen. Sauerstoff hat beispielsweise die Elektronenkonfiguration 1s22s22p4, während das Sauerstoffanion die Elektronenkonfiguration des Edelgases Neon (Ne) 1s22s22p6 hat. Die beiden zusätzlichen Elektronen, die zum Auffüllen der Valenzorbitale erforderlich sind, verleihen dem Oxidion die Ladung 2– (O2–). Ionic compounds form when positive and negative ions attract each other. A cation is a positive ion, and it forms when an atom loses one or more valence electrons. An anion is a negative ion, and it forms when an atom gains one or more valence electrons. Compounds made of these ions are called ionic compounds, or salts, and the force between them is an ionic bond.

The properties of ionic solids help show how strong this attraction is. They usually form rigid, brittle crystals and have high melting and boiling points. They are also poor conductors of electricity in the solid state because the ions cannot move freely. Most ionic solids dissolve readily in water. When an ionic compound is melted or dissolved, it conducts electricity and heat well because the ions can move about freely.

Ionic compounds form most easily when metals lose electrons and nonmetals gain them. Many metals have low ionization potentials, so they lose electrons easily. These elements are found on the left side of the periodic table or near the bottom of a group. Nonmetals have high electron affinities, so they readily gain the electrons lost by metals. They are found in the upper-right corner of the periodic table.

Ionic compounds must remain electrically neutral. That means the total positive charge from the cations must equal the total negative charge from the anions. The formula of an ionic compound gives the simplest ratio of ions needed to balance charge. The formula does not show the physical layout of the ions. In solid sodium chloride, for example, the ions form a tightly bound three-dimensional lattice. The attraction between Na+ and Cl- ions is strong, and it takes 769 kJ of energy to separate one mole of solid NaCl into gaseous ions.

Main-group cations often form by losing all valence electrons and taking on the electron structure of the noble gas before them. For groups 1 and 2, the group number matches the number of valence electrons and also the charge of the ion formed. Calcium is a group 2 element. A neutral calcium atom has 20 electrons, and Ca2+ has 18 electrons with the same electron configuration as argon. For groups 13 through 17, the cation charge equals the group number minus 10. Aluminum, in group 13, forms Al3+.

Some heavy main-group elements do not follow the expected pattern exactly. Thallium, tin, lead, and bismuth can also form lower-charge ions such as Tl+, Sn2+, Pb2+, and Bi3+. This is explained by the inert pair effect, which reflects the relatively low energy of the valence s-electron pair in these heavy atoms. Mercury is another exception. It can form the diatomic ion Hg2^2+, which contains a Hg-Hg bond, as well as the monatomic ion Hg2+.

Transition metals and inner transition metals form ions in a different way. Most transition metal cations have 2+ or 3+ charges. These usually come from losing the outermost s electron or electrons first, and sometimes one or two d electrons after that. Even though d orbitals fill later according to the Aufbau principle, the outermost s electrons are lost first when transition metals ionize. Inner transition metals usually form 3+ ions by losing their outermost s electrons and one d or f electron.

Most monatomic anions form when a nonmetal atom gains enough electrons to fill its outer s and p orbitals. The charge on the ion equals the number of electrons needed to reach the next noble-gas electron configuration. Oxygen is a clear example. A neutral oxygen atom has the configuration 1s2 2s2 2p4. The oxide ion, O2-, has the neon configuration, 1s2 2s2 2p6, after gaining two electrons.
