Multiple Allele Traits

Für dasselbe Gen können mehrere Allele interagieren, um Phänotypen wie die Form und Proteinzusammensetzung der Zellen eines Individuums zu beeinflussen.
 Zum Beispiel in Erythrozyten oder roten Blutkörperchen hat das Hämoglobinprotein eine Komponente, die vom Beta-Globin-Gen codiert wird, für das mehrere verschiedene Allele identifiziert wurden.
 Zusammengenommen sind dies die multiplen Allele von Beta-Globin.
 Für das mutierte Sichel-Allel weisen Homozygoten steife, sichelförmige rote Blutkörperchen, die die Gefäße blockieren.
 Diejenigen mit einer normalen Allel weisen flexible, scheibenförmige Erythrozyten auf, die leicht durch das Gefäßsystem wandern.
 Heterozygoten weisen einige leicht kurvierte Zellen auf, die bei geringem Sauerstoffgehalt ihre Form ändern.
 Denn die Morphologie der Erythrozyten der Heterozygoten fällt zwischen die der Homozygoten.
 Dies ist ein Beispiel einer Allelen-Interaktion, die als Dominanz bezeichnet wird.
 Wäre die Sichelallele dominant, würden die Heterozygoten nur sichelförmige Zellen aufweisen.
 Dies ist nicht der Fall.
 Molekulare Heterzygoten weisen eine andere Allelen-Inter- aktion auf mit der Bezeichnung "Ko-Dominanz".

 Die multiple Allelie beschreibt Gene, die in drei oder mehr Allele haben. Obwohl diploide Organismen wie der Mensch normalerweise nur zwei Allele eines jeden Gens besitzen, gibt es in einer Population mehrere Allele vieler (wenn nicht sogar der meisten) menschlichen Gene. Die Blutgruppe ist ein Beispiel für die multiple Allelie. Beim Menschen gibt es insgesamt drei Allele für die Blutgruppe (HBB Gen): IA, IB, und i.
 
 <h4>Unvollständige Dominanz</h4>
 
 Die Sichelzellanämie, wird durch eine Mutation im Gen für das Beta-Globin (HBB) verursacht. Sie ist ein Beispiel für eine unvollständige Dominanz (Intermediären Erbgang). Zwei Kopien des Sichelzellen Allels werden für die Erkrankung benötigt, wobei Sichelzellen-Homozygoten steife, sichelförmige rote Blutkörperchen produzieren, welche die Blutgefäße verstopfen. Andererseits bilden Individuen, die homozygot für das normale Beta-Globin-Allel sind, flexible, scheibenförmige Erythrozyten, die sich leicht durch das Gefäßsystem fortbewegen.
 
 Heterozygote, die ein normales Allel und ein Sichelzell-Allel haben, bilden jedoch sowohl normale (scheibenförmige) als auch sichelförmige rote Blutkörperchen und haben Merkmale der Sichelzellen Erkrankung. Diese Individuen haben nur selten Komplikationen der Krankheit, es sei denn, sie befinden sich beispielsweise in sauerstoffarmen Umgebungen.  <h4>Kodominanter Erbgang</h4>
 
 Auf molekularer Ebene sind Sichelzell-Heterozygote kodominant, da beide das normale und das Sichelzell-Allel in den roten Blutkörperchen etwa die gleichen Mengen ihrer Proteinprodukte erzeugen.
 
 Die Blutgruppe ist ein weiteres Beispiel für einen kodominanten Erbgang. IA, IB, und i sind die Blutgruppen-Allele des Menschen. IA und IB Allele kodieren A bzw. B Antigenproteine, während das i-Allel überhaupt kein Antigenprotein kodiert. IA und IB sind dominant gegenüber i, und zwei Kopien von i sind für den Phänotyp der Blutgruppe O notwendig. Allerdings sind IA und IB kodominant. So werden in einem IAIB heterozygoten Individuum sowohl A-als auch B-Antigene exprimiert und befinden sich auf der Oberfläche jedes roten Blutkörperchens.

Multiple alleles can shape how a trait is inherited in a population. A gene may have more than two allele forms, even though each person still carries only two alleles for that gene.

These allele combinations can produce traits with more than two possible outcomes. The ABO blood group system is a common example of a multiple allele trait. It shows how different alleles can interact to determine an organism’s phenotype, or observable trait.

Multiple allele traits help explain why inheritance patterns can be more varied than a simple dominant-recessive model. They are an important part of Mendelian genetics and are often used to study how genetic variation appears in real populations.
