Blood Types

Bei der ABO-Blutgruppe wird menschliches Blut in vier Typen unterteilt, basierend auf dem Vorhandensein oder Fehlen von zwei spezifischen Antigenen, Antigen A und Antigen B, auf der Oberfläche der roten Blutkörperchen. Diese Antigene werden von drei Allelen kodiert.
Das Allel-Immunglobulin A, oder einfach Allel A, kodiert für das Antigen A auf der Oberfläche der roten Blutkörperchen. In ähnlicher Weise kodiert Allel B für Antigen B.
Das dritte Allel - als kleines i aufgezeichnet und als Allel O bezeichnet - kodiert nicht für das Antigen, was bedeutet, dass die roten Blutkörperchen weder Antigen A noch Antigen B haben.
Da das Vorhandensein des Antigens die Blutgruppe bestimmt, dominieren die Allele A und B gegenüber dem Allel O, das keine Antigene produziert. 
Der Mensch ist ein diploider Organismus und erhält daher zwei Kopien der Allele, eine von jedem Elternteil. Eine Person mit zwei Kopien des Allels A oder einer Kopie von A und dem rezessiven Allel O hat Blutgruppe A. In ähnlicher Weise hat eine Person mit zwei Kopien des Allels B oder einer Kopie von B und dem rezessiven Allel O Blut vom Typ B.
Eine Kopie von Allel A und eine von Allel B führt zu Blutgruppe AB, einem Beispiel für Kodominanz, bei dem beide Antigene auf der Oberfläche der roten Blutkörperchen exprimiert werden. Umgekehrt hat eine Person mit beiden Kopien des rezessiven nicht-antigenexprimierenden Allels Blutgruppe O.
Stellen Sie sich einen Mann mit Blutgruppe AB und eine Frau mit Blutgruppe O vor. Ihre Nachkommen können eine Kopie des Allels A oder B vom Vater und ein rezessives Allel von der Mutter erben, was zu Nachkommen mit Blut der Blutgruppe A oder B führt.

Das menschliche Blut wird aufgrund der Anwesenheit von Antigenen auf der Oberfläche der roten Blutkörperchen und Antikörpern im Plasma in verschiedene Typen eingeteilt. Die korrekte Identifizierung der Blutgruppe ist für eine erfolgreiche Bluttransfusion unerlässlich. Die Internationale Gesellschaft für Bluttransfusion hat 38 menschliche Blutgruppen auf Basis der Oberflächenantigene der roten Blutkörperchen identifiziert. Die bekanntesten Typen sind die ABO-, Rh- und MNS-Blutgruppen.

ABO-Blutgruppe

ABO-Antigene sind Glykoproteine, die von Genen auf Chromosom 9 kodiert werden. Die roten Blutkörperchen haben eine Basis-Glykoprotein-Komponente bestehend aus Fruktose, Galaktose und N-Acetylglucosamin, die als H-Antigen bezeichnet wird. Blut, das nur das H-Antigen auf der Oberfläche der roten Blutkörperchen aufweist, wird als Blutgruppe O klassifiziert. Die Hinzufügung des terminalen Kohlenhydratmoleküls N-Acetylgalactosamin zum H-Antigen bildet das Antigen-A. Die Anwesenheit eines terminalen Galaktose-Restes am H-Antigen bildet das Antigen B. In einer seltenen Blutgruppe, der Bombay-Blutgruppe, fehlt das H-Antigen auf den roten Blutkörperchen. Die Bombay-Blutgruppe ist eine extrem seltene Erkrankung mit einer Häufigkeit von etwa 4 pro Million der menschlichen Bevölkerung.

MNS-Blutgruppe

Die Antigene der MNS-Blutgruppe sind auf der Oberfläche der roten Blutkörperchen exprimiert. Sie werden von zwei hochpolymorphen Genen, Glykophorin A (GYPA) und Glykophorin B (GYPB), kodiert. GYPA kodiert für das M- oder N-Antigen, während GYPB das S- oder s-Antigen und das N-Antigen ('N') kodiert. Diese Gene können rekombinieren, um über 40 verschiedene Antigene zu produzieren.

Rh-Blutgruppe

Human blood types help determine safe blood transfusion matching. Blood is classified by antigens on the surface of red blood cells and antibodies in the plasma. Correct blood typing matters because an unsafe match can affect transfusion success. The International Society of Blood Transfusion has identified 38 human blood types, and ABO, Rh, and MNS are among the most common.

The ABO blood group depends on antigens made by genes on chromosome 9. Red blood cells carry a base glycoprotein called the H-antigen. If only the H-antigen is present, the blood type is O. Adding N-acetylgalactosamine produces antigen A, while adding terminal galactose produces antigen B.

A rare blood group called the Bombay blood group is different because these patients lack H-antigen on red blood cells. This condition is extremely rare, with an occurrence as low as about 4 per million people. The ABO system therefore includes both common blood types and a rare exception that changes how blood is classified.

The MNS blood group is another red blood cell system. Its antigens are encoded by two highly polymorphic genes, glycophorin A (GYPA) and glycophorin B (GYPB). GYPA codes for M or N antigen. GYPB codes for S or s antigen and also the N antigen. These genes can recombine to produce more than 40 different antigens.

The Rh blood group is based on the presence or absence of Rh factor on the red blood cell surface. A person is classified as Rh positive or Rh negative depending on that antigen. Landsteiner and Wiener coined the term Rh-factor in 1937, and the human alloantibody was later renamed anti-D. More than 45 Rh antigens have been identified, and Rh grouping is most often used together with ABO blood grouping.
