In linearen Alkanen erfolgt die Fragmentierung von Molekülionen, bei denen es sich um radikalische Kationen handelt, die durch die Entfernung eines einzelnen Elektrons von einem Ausgangsmolekül gebildet werden, überwiegend abseits des Endes der Kette und bildet stabile Karbonationen und Radikale.
Betrachten Sie zum Beispiel das Massenspektrum von Hexan. Die markanten Peaks sind durch 14 u getrennt, was auf die Möglichkeit einer anfänglichen Fragmentierung an verschiedenen benachbarten Kohlenstoff-Kohlenstoff-Bindungen in Hexan hinweist.
Die Fragmentierung zwischen einem terminalen Kohlenstoff und seinem benachbarten Kohlenstoff ist aufgrund der instabilen Methylcarbokation oder des erzeugten Methylradikals weniger realisierbar. Kommt es zu dieser Fragmentierung, wird eine Methylradikalbildung gegenüber der Methylcarbokation priorisiert.
Die Logik diktiert, dass die am besten geeignete Fragmentierung zu der stabilsten Carbokation führt und den stabilsten Rest ausstößt. In den Hexan-Massenspektren ist die Butylcarbokation am häufigsten vorhanden und wird zum Basenpeak.
Die anschließende Fragmentierung der Carbokationen mit Wasserstoffverlust ist für die kleinen Peaks in der Nähe jedes markanten Peaks verantwortlich.

Die Molekülionen linearer Alkane fragmentieren bevorzugt an der Kohlenstoff-Kohlenstoff-Bindung abseits des Kettenendes, da die Spaltung einer inneren Bindung ein stabiles Carbokation und ein stabiles Radikal erzeugt. Folglich weisen die Massensignale linearer Alkane intensive Spitzen in der Mitte des Masse-zu-Ladung-Verhältnis Diagramms mit schwächeren Spitzen an beiden Enden auf. Die Fragmentierung jeder Kohlenstoff-Kohlenstoff-Bindung mit der Freisetzung einer Methylgruppe bei jeder Spaltung führt zu markanten Spitzen in den Massenspektren, die durch 14 u voneinander getrennt sind. Kleinere Massensignale in der Nähe jeder markanten Spitze resultieren aus der sekundären Fragmentierung an der Kohlenstoff-Wasserstoff-Bindung.

Betrachten Sie beispielsweise das Fragmentierungsmuster von n-Hexan in Abbildung 1 und die entsprechenden Massenspektren in Abbildung 2.

Die Signale bei einem Masse-zu-Ladungs-Verhältnis von 71, 57, 43, 29 und 15 zeigen an, dass die Spaltung an allen Kohlenstoff-Kohlenstoff-Bindungen im Molekül erfolgen kann. Die relative Häufigkeit dieser Peaks variiert jedoch. Der Unterschied zwischen dem Molekülionensignal und dem Signal bei 71 zeigt die Trennung der Methylgruppen (M.W. = 15 u) von den Molekülionen an. Die weitere Freisetzung einer CH_2-Gruppe aus diesem Fragment (M.W. = 14 u) führt zu einem Signal bei 57. Die Signale bei 43, 29 und 15 sind auf die nachfolgende Freisetzung von CH_2-Gruppen zurückzuführen. Die Häufigkeit der Signale bei 15 und 71 ist aufgrund der geringsten Wahrscheinlichkeit für die Bildung eines instabilen Methylcarbokations bzw. eines Methylradikals minimal. Der Basispeak bei 43 zeigt die bevorzugteste Fragmentierung an, die ein Paar aus stabilem Carbokation und Radikal ergibt.

Mass spectra of linear alkanes show a clear fragmentation pattern. The molecular ion often breaks at a carbon-carbon bond away from the end of the chain. This cleavage forms a stable carbocation and a stable radical, so the middle of the mass-to-charge plot usually has the strongest signals while the ends are weaker.

As each bond breaks, a methyl group is lost and the main peaks in the spectrum appear 14 u apart. Smaller peaks near each main signal can also appear. These come from secondary fragmentation at a carbon-hydrogen bond.

n-Hexane shows this pattern well. Its spectrum has signals at mass-to-charge ratios of 71, 57, 43, 29, and 15. These peaks show that cleavage can happen at every carbon-carbon bond in the molecule, but the peak heights are not the same.

The difference between the molecular ion signal and the signal at 71 shows loss of a methyl group with a mass of 15 u. Loss of another CH2 group with a mass of 14 u gives the signal at 57. The signals at 43, 29, and 15 come from later CH2 losses.

The peaks at 15 and 71 are small because forming a methyl carbocation or a methyl radical is least likely. The base peak at 43 is the most favored fragmentation. It gives the most stable pair of carbocation and radical.
