Intramolecular aldol reactions happen in dicarbonyl compounds such as dialdehydes, diketones, and keto-aldehydes. In these molecules, a base can remove a proton from more than one alpha carbon. This forms an enolate, which is the nucleophilic species that starts the ring-forming step.
