Bei einer Reaktion zwischen einem β-Ketoester und einem Keton ist der β-Ketoester mit niedrigerem pK_a eine stärkere Säure als das Keton. Daher deprotoniert eine schwache Base wie Natriumethoxid bevorzugt den β-Ketoester unter Bildung eines Enolats. Das Enolat greift dann das Keton an und bildet in guter Ausbeute das entsprechende gekreuzte Aldolprodukt. Abbildung 2 zeigt ein Beispiel der gekreuzten Aldolreaktion unter Verwendung einer schwachen Base.

Selective crossed aldol products can be formed by using weak bases. In this reaction, an aldehyde that has an alpha hydrogen is added slowly to a mixture of formaldehyde and a weak base such as hydroxide or alkoxide. Slow addition helps prevent the aldehyde from self-condensing, so one main crossed product can form.

As the aldehyde is added, the base removes a proton from the alpha carbon. This creates an enolate, which is a reactive carbon-based ion. The enolate then attacks formaldehyde to give a single crossed aldol product.

The same idea works well in reactions between a beta-keto ester and a ketone. The beta-keto ester has the lower pKa, so it is the stronger acid and is deprotonated first. A weak base such as sodium ethoxide forms the enolate, and that enolate then reacts with the ketone to produce the crossed aldol product in good yield.
