Animal and Plant Cell Structure

Sowohl pflanzliche als auch tierische Zellen sind eukaryotisch. Ihr Zytoplasma enthält membrangebundene Organellen wie den Zellkern, das endoplasmatische Retikulum und die Mitochondrien.
Sie unterscheiden sich jedoch in ihrer Struktur, Ernährungsweise und Funktionen.
Pflanzenzellen können zwischen 10 und 100 Mikrometer groß sein und werden hauptsächlich von einer Zellwand und einer großen zentralen Vakuole getragen. Die mit Wasser gefüllte Vakuole speichert Nährstoffe und hilft, den Turgordruck aufrechtzuerhalten, um die Zellform zu unterstützen.
Im Gegensatz dazu sind tierische Zellen kleiner und messen nur 10 bis 30 Mikrometer in der Größe. Ihnen fehlt eine Zellwand und sie haben zahlreiche kleine Vakuolen. 
Tierische Zellen werden intern von einem Netzwerk von Proteinfilamenten unterstützt, das als Zytoskelett bezeichnet wird.
Beide Zelltypen unterscheiden sich vor allem in ihren Ernährungsbedürfnissen.
Während Pflanzenzellen Plastiden wie Chloroplasten enthalten, die es ihnen ermöglichen, Photosynthese zu betreiben und ihre Nahrung herzustellen, können tierische Zellen Nährstoffe nur von außen aufnehmen.
In tierischen Zellen fungieren membrangebundene Organellen, sogenannte Lysosomen, als Orte für den Abbau von Makromolekülen. In Pflanzenzellen werden diese Organellen jedoch nur selten beobachtet.
Während pflanzlichen Zellen Flimmerhärchen und Flagellen fehlen, haben tierische Zellen oft solche Zellanhänge, die zur Beweglichkeit beitragen.

Tierische und pflanzliche Zellen unterscheiden sich nicht nur in ihrer Struktur, Funktion und Ernährungsweise, sondern auch in der Art und Weise, wie sie sich vermehren, spezialisieren und sich zu komplexen Strukturen organisieren.

Zellteilung

Obwohl sich sowohl pflanzliche als auch tierische Zellen durch Mitose (bei nicht-gametischen Zellen) und Meiose (bei gametischen Zellen) teilen, unterscheiden sie sich in den Besonderheiten dieses Prozesses. Im Gegensatz zu tierischen Zellen fehlen Pflanzenzellen Zentrosomen – ein Organell, das für die Organisation der Spindelfasern und die Trennung der Chromosomen während der Zellteilung verantwortlich ist. Stattdessen verfügen sie über ein Mikrotubuli-Organisationszentrum (MTOC), das die Selbstorganisation der Tubuli unterstützt, die die Spindel bilden. Die Zytokinese in Pflanzenzellen wird durch die Bildung einer Zellplatte erreicht, die sich vom Zentrum der Zelle zur Peripherie hin entwickelt. Bei den flexiblen Tierzellen bewirkt der kontraktile Ring jedoch, dass sich die Zellmembran zusammenzieht und zwei Tochterzellen abschnürt.

Zellulare Organisation

Pflanzenzellen haben aufgrund der starren Zellwand, die hauptsächlich aus Zellulose besteht, typischerweise eine feste Form, meist rechteckig. Daher ist die Gewebeorganisation in Pflanzen einfach und die interzelluläre Kommunikation und der Austausch von Molekülen erfolgen über Verbindungen, die Plasmodesmen genannt werden. Tierzellen sind normalerweise kleiner und aufgrund der fehlenden Zellwand nicht so steif. Diese Flexibilität ermöglicht es diesen Zellen, viele verschiedene Formen und Gestalten anzunehmen. Ihre Gewebeorganisation kann sehr komplex sein, wobei verschiedene Verbindungen und Kanäle die interzelluläre Kommunikation erleichtern.

Zellspezialisierung

Während sich sowohl tierische als auch pflanzliche Zellen auf unterschiedliche Zelltypen spezialisieren können, ist das Spezialisierungsspektrum bei pflanzlichen Zellen relativ begrenzt. Zu den primären Zelltypen in Pflanzen gehören das Parenchym, das Sklerenchym und das Kollenchym sowie einige spezielle Zellen wie Xylem-, Phloem- und Wurzelhaarzellen. Andererseits haben tierische Zellen ein vielfältiges Struktur- und Funktionsspektrum, das von den runden, bikonkaven roten Blutkörperchen, die Sauerstoff transportieren, bis zu den stark verzweigten, sternförmigen Nervenzellen reicht, die elektrische Signale weiterleiten.

Plant and animal cells differ in how they divide, organize into tissues, and specialize for different jobs. Both cell types divide by mitosis in non-gametic cells and by meiosis in gametic cells, but the details are not the same. These differences help explain how each cell type supports growth and reproduction.

During cell division, animal cells use centrosomes to organize spindle fibers and separate chromosomes. Plant cells do not have centrosomes. Instead, they use a microtubule-organizing center, or MTOC, which helps the spindle form by self-assembly. Plant cells also complete cytokinesis by building a cell plate from the center outward. In animal cells, a contractile ring tightens the cell membrane and pinches one cell into two daughter cells.

Plant cells usually keep a fixed, rectangular shape because of a rigid cell wall made mainly of cellulose. This wall gives plant tissues a simpler organization. Neighboring plant cells communicate and exchange molecules through plasmodesmata, which are junctions between cells. Animal cells do not have a cell wall, so they are smaller, more flexible, and can take many different shapes. Their tissues can also be highly complex, with many junctions and channels for cell-to-cell communication.

Cell specialization also shows clear differences between the two groups. Plant cells can become parenchyma, sclerenchyma, or collenchyma cells. Some plant cells are also specialized as xylem, phloem, or root hair cells. Animal cells show a wider range of forms and functions, from round, biconcave red blood cells that carry oxygen to star-shaped nerve cells that pass electrical signals.
