Newton's First Law: Application

Das erste Newtonsche Gesetz besagt, dass für jede Änderung des Bewegungszustands des Objekts eine äußere Kraft erforderlich ist.
Um dies besser zu verstehen, betrachten Sie einen ruhenden Ball. Die Kräfte, die auf sie wirken, sind die Gravitations- und die Normalkraft, die gleich groß und in entgegengesetzter Richtung sind. Somit ist die Nettokraft ausgeglichen.
Wird der Ball jedoch sanft von einer Seite geschoben, geraten die Kräfte aus dem Gleichgewicht. Es wirkt eine Nettokraft auf das Objekt und die Kugel beginnt in Kraftrichtung zu rollen.
Einmal in Bewegung, wirkt keine Netzkraft auf den Ball, sondern der Ball rollt weiter. Er hätte ewig weitergerollt, wären da nicht der Luftwiderstand und die Reibungskräfte. Diese wirken entgegen der Bewegungsrichtung und bringen den Ball zur Ruhe.
Der Widerstand des Objekts gegen Veränderungen in seinem Ruhe- oder Bewegungszustand wird als Trägheit bezeichnet. Daher ist das erste Gesetz auch als Trägheitsgesetz bekannt.
Die Trägheit, die ein Objekt bietet, ist direkt proportional zu seiner Masse.

Erfahrungen legen nahe, dass ein ruhendes Objekt in Ruhe verbleibt, wenn es allein gelassen wird, und dass ein sich bewegendes Objekt dazu neigt, sich zu verlangsamen und zu stoppen, es sei denn es wird eine Anstrengung unternommen, um es in Bewegung zu halten. Jedoch gibt Newtons erstes Gesetz eine tiefere Erklärung dieser Beobachtung. Anstatt unserer Erfahrung zu widersprechen, besagt Newtons erstes Gesetz, dass für jede Änderung der Durchschnittsgeschwindigkeit (eine Änderung sowohl in Betrag als auch Richtung) eine Ursache vorliegen muss. Diese Ursache ist eine Gesamt-Außenkraft. Ein Objekt, das über einen Tisch oder den Boden gleitet, verlangsamt sich aufgrund der auf das Objekt wirkenden Reibung. Wenn die Reibung verschwindet, wird sich das Objekt trotzdem verlangsamen? Die Idee von Ursache und Wirkung ist entscheidend, um genau zu beschreiben, was in verschiedenen Situationen passiert. Zum Beispiel betrachten wir, was mit einem Objekt passiert, das auf einer rauen horizontalen Oberfläche gleitet. Das Objekt kommt schnell zum Stillstand. Wenn wir die Oberfläche glatter machen, indem wir sie mit Babypuder einsprühen, gleitet das Objekt weiter. Wenn wir die Oberfläche noch glatter machen, indem wir Öl darauf auftragen, gleitet das Objekt noch weiter. Wenn wir diese Entwicklung auf eine reibungsfreie Oberfläche extrapolieren und den Luftwiderstand ignorieren, können wir uns das Objekt vorstellen, wie es in einer geraden Linie unendlich weit gleitet. Reibung ist somit die Ursache für die Verlangsamung (im Einklang mit Newtons erstem Gesetz). Das Objekt würde sich nicht verlangsamen, wenn die Reibung beseitigt wäre.

Unabhängig von der Größenordnung eines Objekts, ob es sich um ein Molekül oder ein subatomares Teilchen handelt, bleiben zwei Eigenschaften in der Physik gültig und interessant: Gravitation und Trägheit. Gravitation ist die Anziehung einer Masse auf eine andere, während Trägheit die Fähigkeit eines Objekts ist, Änderungen in seiner Bewegung zu widerstehen - mit anderen Worten, Beschleunigung zu widerstehen. Newton's first law explains why friction changes an object's motion. It says that an object at rest stays at rest, and an object in motion keeps moving unless a net external force acts on it. A net external force is the overall force from outside the object that causes a change in velocity, meaning a change in speed or direction.

This idea gives a cause-and-effect reason for motion, rather than just describing what we see. Galileo first developed the idea behind the first law of motion, and Newton clarified it. Their work was based on asking what causes a change, instead of stopping at an observation.

That approach was different from the older Aristotelian style of explanation. In that view, a question like why a tiger has stripes might be answered by saying it is simply the nature of the animal. Newton's first law instead links the observed motion of an object to the forces around it.

A common example is an object sliding across a table or floor. It slows down because friction acts as the net force on it. If the surface becomes smoother, such as with talcum powder or oil, the object slides farther before stopping.

If friction were removed and air resistance were ignored, the same object would keep moving in a straight line indefinitely. The law does not contradict everyday experience. It explains that friction is the cause of the slowing.

In physics, inertia is the ability of an object to resist changes in motion, or resist acceleration. This is why Newton's first law is often called the law of inertia. The same ideas apply at many scales, from molecules to subatomic particles, and they help describe both gravitation and inertia as important properties of matter.
