Density and Archimedes' Principle

Ein Objekt, das in eine Flüssigkeit eingetaucht ist, verdrängt die gleiche Menge an Flüssigkeit. Der Anteil des Objekts, der in die Flüssigkeit eingetaucht ist, hängt von der Größe der Auftriebskraft ab, die auf das Objekt einwirkt.

Unter Verwendung des Verhältnisses zwischen Volumen und Masse und der Gleichsetzung der Masse des Objekts mit der Masse des verdrängten Fluids erhält man den untergetauchten Anteil als das Verhältnis der Dichte des Objekts zur Dichte des Fluids.
Je höher die Dichte des Fluids, desto geringer ist der untergetauchte Anteil, wodurch das Objekt in der Flüssigkeit weiter nach oben gedrückt wird.

Aufgrund seiner Form verdrängt das Tonboot mehr Wasser als der Klumpen und erfährt eine größere Auftriebskraft, obwohl seine Masse gleich ist. Das Gleiche gilt für Stahlschiffe. Die durchschnittliche Dichte eines Objekts bestimmt hauptsächlich, ob das Objekt schwimmen wird. Wenn die durchschnittliche Dichte eines Objekts geringer ist als die des umgebenden Fluids, wird es schwimmen. Der Grund dafür ist, dass das Fluid, eine höhere Dichte aufweisend, mehr Masse enthält und daher mehr Gewicht im gleichen Volumen. Die Auftriebskraft, die dem Gewicht des verdrängten Fluids entspricht, ist also größer als das Gewicht des Objekts. Ebenso wird ein dichteres Objekt als das Fluid sinken.

Das Ausmaß, zu dem ein schwimmendes Objekt eingetaucht ist, hängt davon ab, wie die Dichte des Objekts mit der Dichte des Fluids verglichen wird. Zum Beispiel hat ein unbeladenes Schiff eine geringere Dichte und daher ist nur ein kleiner Teil im Vergleich zu demselben Schiff im beladenen Zustand eingetaucht. how buoyancy depends on density

Buoyancy and density explain why some objects float and others sink. A lump of clay sinks in water, but the same clay can float when it is shaped like a boat. The change in shape lets it displace more water, which increases the buoyant force even though its mass stays the same.

The same idea applies to steel ships. An object with an average density lower than the surrounding fluid will float. The fluid has more mass in the same volume, so it has more weight. The buoyant force equals the weight of the fluid displaced, and that force is greater than the object’s weight when the object floats.

If an object is denser than the fluid, it will sink. For a floating object, the amount that stays underwater depends on how its density compares with the fluid’s density. An unloaded ship is less dense and sits higher in the water than the same ship when it is loaded.

The fraction submerged is the volume submerged divided by the object’s total volume. That submerged volume is the same as the volume of fluid displaced. The fraction submerged is also equal to the object’s density divided by the fluid’s density.

This relationship helps explain many familiar examples. Oil floats on water, a hot-air balloon rises in air, cork floats in wine, and iceberg ice floats in saltwater. Hot wax also floats in a lava lamp. Even mountain ranges can be viewed this way, since they float on the higher-density crust and mantle below them. In that sense, even the solid Earth can show fluid-like behavior.
