Density and Archimedes' Principle

An object immersed in a fluid displaces an equal amount of fluid. The fraction of the object submerged in the fluid depends on the magnitude of buoyant force acting on it.
From Archimedes&#39; principle, the buoyant force acting on the object is directly related to the fluid density.
If a higher density fluid replaces the lower one, the displaced fluid volume measures a higher weight, thus increasing the buoyant force acting on the object.
For a floating object, the submerged fraction is the ratio of volume immersed inside the fluid to the object&#39;s volume.
The submerged volume equals the volume of the displaced fluid.
Using&#160; the relationship between the volume and mass and equating the object&#39;s mass to the displaced fluid&#39;s mass, the submerged fraction is obtained as the ratio of the object&#39;s density to the fluid&#39;s density.
Higher the fluid density, lower is the submerged fraction, pushing the object higher up in the fluid.

When a lump of clay is dropped into water, it sinks. But if the same lump of clay is molded into the shape of a boat, it starts to float. Because of its shape, the clay boat displaces more water than the lump and experiences a greater buoyant force, even though its mass is the same. The same holds true for steel ships. The average density of an object majorly determines if the object will float. If an object&#39;s average density is less than that of the surrounding fluid, it will float. The reason is that the fluid, having a higher density, contains more mass and hence more weight in the same volume. The buoyant force, which equals the weight of the fluid displaced, is thus greater than the weight of the object. Likewise, an object denser than the fluid will sink.
The extent to which a floating object is submerged depends on how the object&#39;s density compares to the density of the fluid. For example, an unloaded ship has a lower density, and thus a small portion of it is submerged compared with the same ship when it is loaded. The fraction submerged is the ratio of the volume submerged to the object&#39;s volume. In other words, the volume submerged equals the volume of fluid displaced. The fraction submerged is also equal to the ratio of the object&#39;s density to the density of the fluid. This expression gives insightful information about the type of fluid needed to make an object float or sink. For example, numerous lower-density objects or substances float in higher-density fluids: oil on water, a hot-air balloon in the atmosphere, a bit of cork in wine, an iceberg in saltwater, and hot wax in a &#34;lava lamp,&#34; to name a few. A less obvious example is mountain ranges floating on the higher-density crust and mantle beneath them. Even seemingly solid Earth has fluid characteristics.

how buoyancy depends on density

Buoyancy and density explain why some objects float and others sink. A lump of clay sinks in water, but the same clay can float when it is shaped like a boat. The change in shape lets it displace more water, which increases the buoyant force even though its mass stays the same.

The same idea applies to steel ships. An object with an average density lower than the surrounding fluid will float. The fluid has more mass in the same volume, so it has more weight. The buoyant force equals the weight of the fluid displaced, and that force is greater than the object’s weight when the object floats.

If an object is denser than the fluid, it will sink. For a floating object, the amount that stays underwater depends on how its density compares with the fluid’s density. An unloaded ship is less dense and sits higher in the water than the same ship when it is loaded.

The fraction submerged is the volume submerged divided by the object’s total volume. That submerged volume is the same as the volume of fluid displaced. The fraction submerged is also equal to the object’s density divided by the fluid’s density.

This relationship helps explain many familiar examples. Oil floats on water, a hot-air balloon rises in air, cork floats in wine, and iceberg ice floats in saltwater. Hot wax also floats in a lava lamp. Even mountain ranges can be viewed this way, since they float on the higher-density crust and mantle below them. In that sense, even the solid Earth can show fluid-like behavior.
