Die Bernoulli-Gleichung gilt für jedes inkompressible Fluid in einer laminaren, stetigen Strömung. Ein statisches Fluid hat eine kinetische Energiedichte von null. So reduziert sich die Bernoulli-Gleichung, angewandt auf ein statisches, inkompressibles Fluid, auf einen Ausdruck, der die Drücke in verschiedenen Höhen in Beziehung setzt.
Bewegt sich ein Fluid horizontal, ist die Gravitationsenergiedichte an allen Punkten konstant. In diesem Fall setzt die Bernoulli-Gleichung den Druck an zwei beliebigen Punkten der Stromlinie mit der Geschwindigkeit des Fluids an diesen Punkten in Beziehung. Diese vereinfachte Gleichung wird als Bernoulli-Prinzip bezeichnet.
Der Durchgang einer Flüssigkeit durch einen Bereich mit hoher Geschwindigkeit verringert ihren Druck. Wenn eine andere Flüssigkeit in diesen Bereich eindringen kann, wird sie hereinströmen. Dieser Prozess wird als Entrainment bezeichnet und hat viele Anwendungen.

Bernoullis Prinzip findet mehrere Anwendungen. Da der Höhenunterschied proportional zum Druckunterschied zwischen den beiden Enden ist, ist er proportional zum Quadrat der Geschwindigkeit der einströmenden Flüssigkeit. Somit kann durch Messung des Höhenunterschieds der Flüssigkeit im Manometer die Geschwindigkeit der einströmenden Flüssigkeit bestimmt werden.

Bernoulli's Principle

Bernoulli's equation links fluid pressure and fluid speed in a static, incompressible fluid. For horizontal flow, where gravitational energy density stays constant, the equation is especially useful. In that setting, the result is known as Bernoulli's principle.

Bernoulli's principle says that fluid pressure drops when speed increases, and pressure rises when speed decreases. This pressure-speed relationship helps explain how moving fluids behave in simple flow situations. It also provides a useful way to compare changes in motion and pressure across a fluid.

One application is entrainment. In entrainment, one fluid changes the pressure in a region that another fluid can reach. The pressure difference then affects the motion of the second fluid. Bernoulli's principle is also used to measure the unknown speed of a fluid.

A manometer can be used for this measurement. A manometer is a tube with two openings. One opening faces the fluid flow directly, so the fluid comes to rest there. The other opening is along the flow. The tube contains a liquid of known density, and the different flow speeds at the two ends create different pressures.

Using Bernoulli's principle, the pressure difference is proportional to the square of the incoming fluid's speed. That same pressure difference makes the liquid levels in the manometer rise to different heights. Because the height difference is proportional to the pressure difference, it is also proportional to the square of the fluid's speed. By measuring that height difference, the speed of the incoming fluid can be found.
