Acceleration due to Gravity on Earth

Ein Objekt gilt als frei fallend, wenn die einzige Kraft, die auf es wirkt, die Erdanziehungskraft ist. Die Beschleunigung eines solchen frei fallenden Objekts wird als Beschleunigung durch die Schwerkraft bezeichnet, die mit g bezeichnet wird.
Nach dem zweiten Newtonschen Bewegungsgesetz ist die Größe der Kraft, die auf das Objekt wirkt, gleich seiner Masse multipliziert mit seiner Beschleunigung. Es wird auch als Gewicht des Objekts bezeichnet.
Setzt man mg mit der Gravitationskraftgleichung gleich, so kann die durch die Schwerkraft verursachte Beschleunigung des Objekts als Produkt aus der Gravitationskonstante und der Erdmasse dividiert durch das Quadrat seiner Entfernung vom Erdmittelpunkt ausgedrückt werden.
Der durchschnittliche Messwert von g nahe der Erdoberfläche liegt bei 9,8 m/s2. Da g unabhängig von der Masse des Objekts ist, fallen alle Massen in der Nähe der Erdoberfläche mit der gleichen Beschleunigung frei ab.
Wenn man also die Werte der Erdbeschleunigung durch die Schwerkraft, die Gravitationskonstante und die Entfernung als Erdradius einsetzt, wird die Masse der Erde auf 5,97 × 1024 Kilogramm geschätzt.

Nach Newtons Gravitationsgesetz ist die Gravitationskraft auf einen Körper proportional zu seiner Masse. Gemäß dem zweiten Newtonschen Bewegungsgesetz ist die Beschleunigung, die von einer externen Kraft erzeugt wird, umgekehrt proportional zur Kraft. Daher ist die Beschleunigung eines Objekts unter einer externen Gravitationskraft unabhängig von seiner Masse.

Die Beschleunigung eines Objekts in der Nähe der Erde aufgrund der Schwerkraft der Erde wird als Beschleunigung durch die Schwerkraft bezeichnet. Sie ist immer zum Erdmittelpunkt hin gerichtet.

Natürlich übt jedes Objekt eine gleichwertige und entgegengesetzte Kraft auf die Erde aus. Da die Masse der Erde jedoch viel größer ist als gewöhnliche Objekte in ihrer Nähe, ist ihre Beschleunigung vernachlässigbar. Daher dient die Erde als TrägheitsReferenzrahmen, das sich zur Untersuchung der Dynamik von der auf ihr platzierten Objekten eignet.

Die Beschleunigung durch die Schwerkraft, die von jedem Objekt in der Nähe der Erdoberfläche wahrgenommen wird, wird auf etwa 9,80 m/s² gemessen. Solange sich ein Objekt relativ nah an der Erdoberfläche befindet, kann sein Wert als konstant angesehen werden. Beispielsweise unterscheidet sich die Beschleunigung durch die Schwerkraft auf dem Mount Everest, dem höchsten Berg auf der Erdoberfläche, für praktische Zwecke nicht signifikant. Jedoch ist ihr Wert in Hunderten von Kilometern über der Erdoberfläche beträchtlich unterschiedlich. Darüber hinaus variiert die Beschleunigung durch die Schwerkraft aufgrund der Rotation der Erde um ihre Achse vom Äquator zu den Polen.

Da die Masse und der durchschnittliche Radius der Erde mit der Gravitationskonstanten und der Beschleunigung durch die Schwerkraft auf der Erde zusammenhängen, kann, wenn einer bekannt ist, der andere abgeschätzt werden. Wenn wir zum Beispiel den Erdradius durch geometrische Messungen kennen, können wir seine Masse messen.

Gravity near Earth gives objects a downward acceleration called acceleration due to gravity. It comes from Earth’s gravitational pull and points toward the center of the Earth. Newton’s law of gravitation shows that the gravitational force depends on mass, while Newton’s second law shows that the acceleration produced by a force depends on how that force acts on the object.

Because of this relationship, the acceleration due to gravity is independent of an object’s mass. An object and the Earth pull on each other with equal force in opposite directions. But Earth’s mass is so large compared with ordinary objects that Earth’s acceleration is negligible.

For problems on or near Earth’s surface, Earth can be treated as an inertial frame of reference. That makes it a useful frame for studying motion. The acceleration due to gravity near the surface is about 9.80 m/s², and it can usually be taken as constant when the object stays close to the ground.

This approximation works even for tall places like Mount Everest. It does not hold as well far above Earth, where gravity changes at distances hundreds of kilometers from the surface. Gravity also varies from the equator to the poles because Earth rotates about its axis.

The value of g is linked to Earth’s mass and average radius through the gravitational constant. If one of these quantities is known, the other can be estimated. For example, if Earth’s radius is measured geometrically, Earth’s mass can also be found.
