Circular Orbits and Critical Velocity for Satellites

Eine Kugel, die mit einer bestimmten horizontalen Geschwindigkeit v0 von einem Turm gestoßen wird, landet unter dem Einfluss der Erdanziehungskraft an einem Punkt A.
Wird ein Ball mit höherer horizontaler Geschwindigkeit geschoben, landet er weiter am Punkt B. Mit einer weiteren Erhöhung der Geschwindigkeit wird er weiter als Punkt B fliegen und bei Punkt C landen.
Bei einer bestimmten kritischen Geschwindigkeit vc wird er jedoch einer perfekt kreisförmigen Umlaufbahn um die Erde folgen. Steigt die Geschwindigkeit über den kritischen Wert, folgt die Kugel einer elliptischen Umlaufbahn.
Wenn also ein Satellit die Erde mit kritischer Geschwindigkeit umkreist, wird er unter dem Einfluss der Erdanziehungskraft eine perfekt kreisförmige Bahn um die Erde nehmen. Die Zentripetalbeschleunigung eines Satelliten wäre also gleich seiner Beschleunigung durch die Schwerkraft.
Ersetzt man die Gravitationsbeschleunigung und ordnet die Terme neu an, so ist die kritische Geschwindigkeit eines Satelliten gleich der Quadratwurzel aus dem Produkt aus der Gravitationskonstante und der Erdmasse dividiert durch ihre Gesamtentfernung vom Erdmittelpunkt.

Der Mond umkreist die Erde. Wiederum umkreist die Erde (und andere Planeten) die Sonne. Der Raum direkt oberhalb unserer Atmosphäre ist mit künstlichen Satelliten gefüllt, die sich in Umlaufbahnen befinden. Man kann die kreisförmige Umlaufbahn, die einfachste Art der Umlaufbahn, untersuchen, um die Beziehung zwischen der Geschwindigkeit und der Periode von Planeten und Satelliten in Bezug auf ihre Positionen und die Körper, die sie umkreisen, zu verstehen.

Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543) schlug zuerst vor, dass die Erde und alle anderen Planeten die Sonne in Kreisen umkreisen. Er bemerkte weiterhin, dass die Umlaufperioden mit der Entfernung von der Sonne zunehmen. Orbital speed and period in circular paths explain how the Moon, planets, and satellites stay in motion around larger bodies. The Moon orbits Earth. Earth and the other planets orbit the Sun. The space above our atmosphere also contains many artificial satellites.

A circular orbit is the simplest orbit to study. It helps show how an object’s speed and its period, or the time for one full orbit, depend on where it is and what it circles. Nicolaus Copernicus first suggested that Earth and the other planets moved around the Sun in circles. He also noted that orbital periods increase with distance from the Sun.

Later, Johannes Kepler showed that planetary orbits are actually ellipses, or stretched circles. Even so, most orbits in the solar system are nearly circular. Earth’s distance from the Sun changes by only about 2%. Mercury is a major exception, since its orbit is much more eccentric and its orbital distance changes by nearly 40%.

A circular orbit happens when an object has the right tangential velocity. Tangential velocity is the sideways speed that keeps the object moving forward as gravity pulls it inward. In this case, Earth’s surface curves away at the same rate that the object falls toward Earth. Because of this simple balance, finding a satellite’s orbital speed and orbital period is much easier for circular orbits.
