Kepler's First Law of Planetary Motion

Johannes Kepler stellte in seinem ersten Gesetz fest, dass jeder Planet eine elliptische Bahn hat, wobei sich die Sonne in einem seiner Brennpunkte befindet.
In der elliptischen Umlaufbahn ist ein Planet der Sonne am Perihelpunkt A am nächsten und am weitesten von der Sonne entfernt, wenn er sich am Aphelpunkt B befindet. Die durchschnittliche Entfernung des Planeten von der Sonne ist gleich der großen Halbachse der Ellipse.
Im Perihel ist die potentielle Energie des Planeten geringer als im Aphel, da die Entfernung rA kleiner ist als die Entfernung rB.
Nach dem Energieerhaltungsprinzip bleibt die Gesamtenergie des Planeten in einer geschlossenen Umlaufbahn erhalten. Daher ist die kinetische Energie des Planeten im Perihel höher als im Aphel.
Da die kinetische Energie dem halbfachen Produkt aus der Masse des Planeten und dem Quadrat seiner Umlaufgeschwindigkeit entspricht, bewegt sich der Planet auf seiner Umlaufbahn schneller, wenn er im Perihel näher an der Sonne ist, und verlangsamt sich, wenn er von der Sonne entfernt ist.

Im frühen 17. Jahrhundert postulierte der deutsche Astronom und Mathematiker Johannes Kepler drei Gesetze für die Bewegung der Planeten im Sonnensystem. Er formulierte seine ersten beiden Gesetze basierend auf den Beobachtungen seiner Vorgänger Nikolaus Kopernikus und Tycho Brahe.

Der polnische Astronom Nikolaus Kopernikus stellte eine Theorie auf, die ein heliozentrisches Modell für das Sonnensystem postulierte. Laut dieser heliozentrischen Theorie umkreisen alle Planeten, einschließlich der Erde, die Sonne in kreisförmigen Umlaufbahnen.

Auf der anderen Seite hatte der dänische Astronom Tycho Brahe, der Arbeitgeber von Johannes Kepler, die Position jedes Planeten detailliert aufgezeichnet. Für die meisten sichtbaren Planeten waren diese Beobachtungen im Einklang mit der kopernikanischen heliozentrischen Theorie, außer für den Planeten Mars.

Bei der Analyse der Mars-Daten von Tycho Brahe erkannte Johannes Kepler, dass die kopernikanische Theorie korrekt war, außer dass die Planeten in einer elliptischen Umlaufbahn um die Sonne kreisen, anstatt in kreisförmigen Umlaufbahnen. Da b < a gilt, ist die Exzentrizität einer Ellipse immer kleiner als eins. Für einen Kreis gilt a = b, daher ist die Exzentrizität eines Kreises Null.

Die Exzentrizität der Umlaufbahn des Mars beträgt 0,0935. Sie gilt als die Umlaufbahn mit der größten Exzentrizität nach Merkur, dessen Exzentrizität 0,21 beträgt. Die Umlaufbahn der Erde hat eine Exzentrizität von 0,0167.

Da sich die Planeten in elliptischen Umlaufbahnen mit der Sonne in einem der Brennpunkte befinden, ändert sich ihre Abstandsveränderung zum Sonnensystem im Laufe des Jahres. Ihr kleinster Abstand zur Sonne wird Perigäum genannt, während der größere Abstand Apogäum genannt wird.

Planet orbits are not perfect circles. Johannes Kepler used planet data from Tycho Brahe to show that each planet follows an ellipse, with the Sun at one focus. This idea came from studying Mars, which did not fit the circular path expected in the Copernican heliocentric model.

Copernicus had proposed that the solar system is heliocentric, meaning the Sun is at the center and the planets, including Earth, move around it. His model treated those paths as circles. Brahe later recorded the positions of the planets in great detail, and most of the visible planets matched the Copernican picture. Mars was the major exception.

An ellipse is an elongated circle. Its longest axis is the major axis, marked a, and the shorter axis across it is the minor axis, marked b. The amount of stretch is called eccentricity. Because b is less than a, the eccentricity of an ellipse is always less than 1, and a circle has an eccentricity of zero because its sides are equal.

Kepler’s orbit model also explains why a planet’s distance from the Sun changes during the year. The closest point is called perigee, and the farthest point is called apogee. Mars has an eccentricity of 0.0935, which is the most eccentric orbit after Mercury at 0.21. Earth’s orbit is much closer to a circle, with an eccentricity of 0.0167.
