Tidal Forces

Die Gravitationskräfte hängen vom Abstand zwischen den beiden Punktmassen ab. Bei einem ausgedehnten Objekt wie der Erde ist die Gravitationskraft der Sonne, die auf der der Sonne zugewandten Seite wirkt, jedoch höher als die auf der anderen Seite.
Wenn Fg die durchschnittliche Gravitationskraft ist, die im Erdmittelpunkt wirkt, entstehen aus der Kräftedifferenz Gezeitenkräfte. Die daraus resultierenden Kräfte an A und B werden vom Erdmittelpunkt weg gerichtet.
Kräfte, die auf C und D wirken, haben unterschiedliche Richtungen. Die entstehenden Kräfte an diesen beiden Punkten richten sich also auf den Mittelpunkt der Erde.
Daher quetschen die entstehenden Restkräfte die Erde zu einer abgeflachten Kugel. Da der größte Teil der Erdoberfläche aus Ozeanen besteht, wird dieser Effekt prominent als ein Paar von Ebbe und Flut gesehen.
Die Wirkung der Gezeitenkräfte auf die Erde durch den Mond ist aufgrund der Nähe und vergleichbaren Größe des Mondes etwa 2,2-mal stärker als die der Sonne.

Der Ursprung der Ozeangezeiten auf der Erde ist seit über 2000 Jahren Gegenstand kontinuierlicher Untersuchungen. Die Arbeit von Newton wird jedoch als Beginn des richtigen Verständnisses des Phänomens angesehen. Ozeangezeiten sind das Ergebnis von gravitativen Gezeitenkräften. Diese gleichen Gezeitenkräfte sind in jedem astronomischen Körper vorhanden; sie sind für die interne Hitze verantwortlich, die die vulkanische Aktivität auf Io, einem der Monde des Jupiters, erzeugt, sowie für das Zerbrechen von Sternen, die schwarzen Löchern zu nahe kommen.

Das Gravitationsgesetz von Newton besagt, dass die Gravitationskraft umgekehrt proportional zum Quadrat der Entfernung zwischen den zwei Massenpunkten ist. Bei einem ausgedehnten Objekt wie der Erde ist jedoch die Gravitationskraft, die auf die der Sonne zugewandte Seite wirkt, viel höher als die auf der anderen Seite wirkende Gravitationskraft. Dieser Unterschied in den Kräften an verschiedenen Orten führt zu Gezeitenkräften, die umgekehrt proportional zur dritten Potenz der Entfernung zwischen den beiden Massen sind.

Der Meeresspiegel steigt zweimal täglich, hauptsächlich aufgrund der Gezeitenkräfte, die auf die Erde aufgrund der Schwerkraft des Mondes wirken. Obwohl die Sonne 27 Millionen Mal massereicher ist als der Mond, ist ihr Abstand von der Erde etwa 390 Mal größer als der Abstand zwischen der Erde und dem Mond. Da die Gezeitenkräfte umgekehrt proportional zur dritten Potenz der Entfernung sind, beträgt die Gezeitenkraft der Sonne etwa die Hälfte der des Mondes.

Obwohl der Mond die dominierende Kraft ist, die Gezeiten auf der Erde verursacht, hat auch die Sonne einen Effekt. Die Gezeiten variieren je nach Ausrichtung der drei Körper. Wenn die Sonne, die Erde und der Mond ausgerichtet sind, d. h. an einem Vollmond- oder Neumondtag, addieren sich die Gezeitenkräfte und die Amplitude der Gezeiten ist maximal. Diese werden Springtiden genannt. An einem Halbmondtag steht der Mond senkrecht zur Linie Sonne-Erde. Hier sind die Gezeiten am geringsten und werden Nipptide genannt.

Die Rotation der Erde und die Umlaufbahn des Mondes erschweren die Berechnung der Zeitspannen der Gezeiten. Es kann jedoch grob angenommen werden, dass die Zeit zwischen aufeinanderfolgenden Hoch- (oder Niedrig-) Gezeiten 12,5 Stunden beträgt.

Earth’s ocean tides are driven by gravitational tidal forces. Scientists have studied the origin of tides for more than 2000 years, and Newton’s work marked the start of a proper understanding. These same tidal forces also act on other astronomical bodies. They can produce internal heat that leads to volcanic activity on Io, one of Jupiter’s moons, and they can tear apart stars that pass too close to black holes.

Newton’s law of gravitation says that gravitational force is inversely proportional to the square of the distance between two point masses. Earth, however, is not a point mass. The side facing the Sun feels a stronger pull than the side farther away. That difference in gravity across an extended object creates tidal forces. For tidal forces, the strength falls off with the cube of the distance between the two masses.

On Earth, sea level rises twice a day mainly because of the Moon’s tidal force. The Sun is much more massive than the Moon, but it is also much farther from Earth. Even though the Sun is about 27 million times more massive, its tidal force is only about half as strong as the Moon’s because tidal forces depend strongly on distance. The Moon is the main cause of Earth’s tides, but the Sun still changes them.

The size of the tides depends on how the Sun, Earth, and Moon are lined up. When they are aligned during a Full Moon or New Moon, the tidal forces add together and the tide height is greatest. These larger tides are called spring tides. During a Half Moon, the Moon is at right angles to the Sun-Earth line. Then the tides are smallest, and they are called neap tides.

Earth’s rotation and the Moon’s revolution make the timing of tides more complicated. Even so, the time between one high tide and the next, or one low tide and the next, is about 12.5 hours. That pattern helps explain why coastal water levels rise and fall in a regular cycle.
