Reflection of Waves

Wenn eine sich ausbreitende Welle auf die Grenze eines beliebigen Mediums trifft, wird sie reflektiert. Die Welle von der Quelle, die sich in der Luft ausbreitet und auf die Grenze des Mediums trifft, wird als einfallende Welle bezeichnet. Die ausgehende Welle wird als reflektierte Welle bezeichnet.
Stellen Sie sich nun die Ausbreitung von Wellen durch eine gespannte Schnur vor, die an einem Ende an einen Haken an der Wand gebunden ist. Die Welle wandert zum Haken und wird reflektiert.
Da sich die Grenze des Mediums nicht frei mit den Schwingungen der Welle bewegen kann, spricht man von einer festen Randbedingung.
In einem solchen Fall ist die reflektierte Welle um 180° phasenverschoben zur einfallenden Welle.
Unter der Annahme, dass keine Verluste aufgetreten sind, bleibt die Amplitude der reflektierten Welle unverändert.
Wenn sich die Grenze des Mediums frei mit den Schwingungen der Welle bewegen kann, wird dies als freie Randbedingung bezeichnet.
In einem solchen Fall hat die reflektierte Welle die gleiche Amplitude und Phase wie die einfallende Welle.

Ein häufiges Beispiel dafür ist, wenn eine Person in einiger Entfernung von einer Klippe schreit und das Echo ihrer Stimme hört. Die Schallwellen (longitudinale Wellen), die sich in der Luft bewegen, werden von der begrenzenden Klippe reflektiert. Ebenso verursacht das Umklappen eines Endes einer Schnur, deren anderes Ende an einer Wand befestigt ist, dass ein Impuls (transversale Welle) durch die Schnur läuft, der beim Erreichen der Wand reflektiert wird. In diesem Fall fungiert das festgebundene Ende als die Grenze der Welle, die sich nicht mit den Schwingungen bewegen kann.

Erinnern wir uns an Newtons drittes Bewegungsgesetz, das besagt, dass jede Aktion eine gleich große und entgegengesetzte Reaktion hat. Wenn die einfallende Welle auf die Wand trifft, übt die Schnur eine nach oben gerichtete Kraft auf die Wand aus und die Wand reagiert, indem sie eine gleich große und entgegengesetzte Kraft auf die Schnur ausübt. Damit wird im Fall einer Reflexion an einer festen Grenze eine Kuppe zu einer Talsenke und umgekehrt.

Wenn die Grenze jedoch nicht fest ist und sich mit den Schwingungen der Welle frei bewegen kann, wird die Phase der reflektierten Welle nicht umgekehrt. Wenn die Schnur zum Beispiel an einem festen Ring befestigt ist, der entlang einer reibungsfreien Stange gleiten kann, ist das Ende der Schnur frei, sich auf- und abwärts zu bewegen. Die Welle trifft auf die freie Grenze und übt eine nach oben gerichtete Kraft auf den Ring aus, der sich nach oben bewegt. Der Ring steigt auf die maximale Höhe, die der Amplitude der Welle entspricht, und beschleunigt dann aufgrund der Spannung in der Schnur in Richtung der Gleichgewichtslage abwärts. Somit wäre im Fall einer einfallenden Welle als Talsenke die reflektierte Welle auch eine Talsenke bei einer freien Grenze.

Wave reflection happens when a wave reaches a boundary between two media and bounces back. A familiar example is an echo, where sound waves in air reflect from a cliff. Sound waves are longitudinal waves, while a pulse on a string is a transverse wave.

A pulse on a string tied to a wall reflects when it reaches the fixed end. The wall acts as a boundary that cannot move with the oscillation. By Newton’s third law, the string pushes on the wall and the wall pushes back with an equal and opposite force. At a fixed boundary, a crest becomes a trough after reflection, and a trough becomes a crest.

Reflection is different when the boundary is free to move with the wave. If the string is tied to a solid ring that slides along a frictionless pole, the end of the string can move up and down. The wave pushes the ring upward, and the ring rises to a height equal to the wave’s amplitude before tension in the string pulls it back down. In this case, the reflected wave is not inverted, so a trough reflects as a trough.

Mechanical waves carry a disturbance through a medium. They repeat periodically and are often linked with simple harmonic motion. These waves follow Newton's laws and need a material medium to move through. A medium is the substance that carries the wave and provides an elastic restoring force when it is deformed. Water waves, sound waves, and seismic waves are examples of mechanical waves. In water waves, water is the medium. In sound waves, the medium is usually air, but it can also be water.
