Propagation of Waves

Eine Welle kann sich von einem Medium auf ein anderes ausbreiten, wobei jedes eine andere Dichte hat. In einem solchen Fall wird die Einfallswelle teilweise propagiert und teilweise reflektiert.
Die Wellenausbreitungsgeschwindigkeit wäre im dichteren Medium relativ geringer als im selteneren Medium.
Eine Größe des Brechungsindex vergleicht die Geschwindigkeit elektromagnetischer Wellen in verschiedenen Medien. Sie wird ausgedrückt als das Verhältnis der Lichtgeschwindigkeit im Vakuum zur Lichtgeschwindigkeit in einem bestimmten Medium.
Wenn sich die Welle vom dichteren Medium zum selteneren Medium ausbreitet, sind die reflektierten und transmittierten Wellen in Phase mit der einfallenden Welle, aber ihre Amplitude wird reduziert.
Platziert man den Laser hingegen auf der anderen Seite, breitet sich die Welle vom selteneren zum dichteren Medium aus. In diesem Fall ist die reflektierte Welle um 180° phasenverschoben zur einfallenden Welle. Die übertragene Welle bleibt in Phase mit der einfallenden Welle.

Betrachten wir ein Szenario, in dem sich eine Welle von einer Schnur mit geringer linearer Massendichte auf eine Schnur mit hoher linearer Massendichte ausbreitet. In einem solchen Fall ist die reflektierte Welle gegenüber der einfallenden Welle phasenverschoben, während die übertragene Welle bezüglich der einfallenden Welle phasengleich ist. Sowohl die reflektierten als auch die übertragenen Wellen haben Amplituden, die kleiner sind als die Amplitude der einfallenden Welle. Wenn die Spannung in beiden Schnüren gleich ist, ist die Wellengeschwindigkeit in der Schnur mit höherer linearer Massedichte geringer.

Im Gegensatz dazu betrachten wir die Ausbreitung von Wellen von einer Schnur mit hoher linearer Massendichte auf eine Schnur mit niedriger linearer Massendichte. In einem solchen Fall ist die reflektierte Welle phasengleich zur einfallenden Welle, ebenso wie die übertragene Welle. Sowohl die reflektierten als auch die übertragenen Wellen haben Amplituden, die kleiner sind als die Amplitude der einfallenden Welle.

wave reflection and transmission

Wave reflection and transmission happen when a wave moves from one medium to another. At the boundary, part of the wave can bounce back into the first medium, and part can pass into the second medium. The interface between the two media then acts like a boundary that is neither fixed nor free.

The wave behavior depends on the change in linear mass density of the strings. When a wave travels from a string with low linear mass density to a string with high linear mass density, the reflected wave is out of phase with the incident wave. The transmitted wave stays in phase with the incident wave. In this case, both reflected and transmitted waves have smaller amplitudes than the incoming wave.

If the tension in both strings is the same, the wave speed is lower in the string with higher linear mass density. The opposite change gives a different phase result. When a wave moves from a string with high linear mass density to a string with low linear mass density, the reflected wave is in phase with the incident wave. The transmitted wave is also in phase, and both waves again have amplitudes smaller than the incident wave.

Mechanical Waves in Air, Water, and Earth

Mechanical waves carry a disturbance through a medium. They repeat periodically and are often linked with simple harmonic motion. These waves follow Newton's laws and need a material medium to move through. A medium is the substance that carries the wave and provides an elastic restoring force when it is deformed. Water waves, sound waves, and seismic waves are examples of mechanical waves. In water waves, water is the medium. In sound waves, the medium is usually air, but it can also be water.

Wave motion can be described by a few key parameters. Simple mechanical waves repeat over several cycles and can be modeled with sine and cosine functions.
