Standing Waves

Wird eine gespannte Saite gezupft, schwingt die entstehende Welle auf und ab. Dies wird durch die Interferenz zweier Wellen erzeugt, die sich in entgegengesetzte Richtungen bewegen und die gleiche Frequenz und Amplitude haben.
Wenn eine Wanderwelle auf eine Grenze trifft, wird sie im Idealfall hin und her reflektiert. Das Wellenmuster bleibt entlang der Saite stationär, während seine Amplitude schwankt. Eine solche Welle wird als stehende Welle bezeichnet.
Die Summe der einzelnen Wellenfunktionen zweier Wellen ergibt die Wellenfunktion der stehenden Welle. 
Hier stellt die Sinusfunktion die sinusförmige einfache harmonische Schwingung der Welle dar, während die Kosinusfunktion als Skalierungsfaktor fungiert, der die Amplitude der Welle modifiziert.
Wenn die Zeit gleich einem ganzzahligen Vielfachen einer halben Periode ist, sind die beiden Wellen in Phase; sie verfallen um ein ganzzahliges Vielfaches von einem Viertel einer Periode aus der Phase.
Die Punkte, an denen die Sinusfunktion Null ist, haben eine Verschiebung von Null und werden als Knoten bezeichnet.
Die Punkte, an denen die Sinusfunktion bei phasengleichen Wellen maximal ist, entsprechen der maximalen Verschiebung. Diese Punkte werden als Antiknoten bezeichnet.

Manchmal scheinen sich Wellen nicht zu bewegen; stattdessen vibrieren sie einfach an Ort und Stelle. Unbewegliche Wellen können auf der Oberfläche eines im Kühlschrank aufbewahrten Glases Milch beobachtet werden, was ein Beispiel für stehende Wellen ist. Vibrationen des Kühlschrankmotors erzeugen Wellen auf der Milch, die auf und ab schwingen, aber scheinbar die Oberfläche nicht überqueren. Diese Wellen werden durch die Überlagerung von zwei oder mehr identischen bewegten Wellen in entgegengesetzte Richtungen gebildet oder erzeugt. Die Wellen bewegen sich durch einander hindurch, wobei sich ihre Störungen beim Vorbeigehen addieren. Wenn die beiden Wellen die gleiche Amplitude und Wellenlänge haben und die Schwingungen an festen Orten im Raum stattfinden, wechseln sie sich zwischen konstruktiver und destruktiver Interferenz ab. Die resultierende Wellenform sieht aus wie eine Welle die an einem Ort steht und wird daher als stehende Welle bezeichnet. Einige weitere Beispiele für stehende Wellen sind solche, die durch das Zupfen der Saiten eines Musikinstruments wie einer Gitarre entstehen oder durch das Blasen einer Orgelpfeife und durch die Reflexion von Wellen an den Enden der Saite oder der Orgelpfeife entstehen. Knoten sind die Punkte, an denen sich die Saite nicht bewegt; allgemeiner sind Knoten die Stellen, an denen die Störung der Welle in einer stehenden Welle null ist. Auch die festen Enden von Saiten müssen Knoten sein, da sich die Saite dort nicht bewegen kann. Das Wort "Knotenlinie" wird verwendet, um den Ort maximaler Amplitude in stehenden Wellen zu bezeichnen.

Wave interference in strings and air columns can create standing waves that seem to vibrate in place. A standing wave may appear on the surface of a glass of milk kept in a refrigerator. The refrigerator motor sends vibrations into the milk, and the wave moves up and down without seeming to travel across the surface.

Standing waves form when two or more identical moving waves travel in opposite directions. As the waves pass through each other, their disturbances add together. When the waves have the same amplitude and wavelength, the pattern alternates between constructive interference and destructive interference at fixed points in space.

The result is a waveform that looks stationary, so it is called a standing wave. Plucked musical strings, such as guitar strings, and blown organ pipes can also produce standing waves. In these cases, reflections from the ends of the string or the pipe help create the pattern.

Standing waves have nodes and antinodes. Nodes are points where the string does not move, or where the wave disturbance is zero. The fixed ends of a string must also be nodes because the string cannot move there. Antinodes are the points of maximum amplitude in the standing wave.

Mechanical Waves in Air, Water, and Earth

Mechanical waves carry a disturbance through a medium. They repeat periodically and are often linked with simple harmonic motion. These waves follow Newton's laws and need a material medium to move through. A medium is the substance that carries the wave and provides an elastic restoring force when it is deformed. Water waves, sound waves, and seismic waves are examples of mechanical waves. In water waves, water is the medium. In sound waves, the medium is usually air, but it can also be water.

Wave motion can be described by a few key parameters. Simple mechanical waves repeat over several cycles and can be modeled with sine and cosine functions.
