Modes of Standing Waves - I

Wenn eine gespannte Saite gezupft wird, sind die resultierenden Wellen nichtlinear. Diese nichtlinearen Wellen werden durch die Interferenz zweier Wellen erzeugt, die sich in entgegengesetzte Richtungen bewegen und die gleiche Frequenz und Amplitude haben.
Die resultierenden Wellenmuster, bestehend aus Knoten und Antinodes, werden als Normalmoden oder Harmonische bezeichnet.
Die erste Harmonische tritt auf, wenn die Wellenlänge doppelt so lang ist wie die Saite, was auch als Grundton bezeichnet wird.
Die Randbedingung ist, dass sich an den beiden Enden der Zeichenfolge Knoten befinden. Eine Welle, die dieser Bedingung nicht folgt, ist unmöglich. Bei Wellen, die dieser Bedingung folgen, entspricht die doppelte Länge des Strings den ganzzahligen Vielfachen der Wellenlänge.
Darauf aufbauend kann die Wellenlänge jeder Normalmoden bestimmt werden. Erinnern Sie sich daran, dass die Wellenlänge umgekehrt mit der Frequenz zusammenhängt. Die Frequenz jeder Harmonischen ist also das n-te Vielfache der ersten Harmonischen.

Ein genauer Blick auf Erdbeben zeigt, welche Bedingungen für Resonanz, stehende Wellen und konstruktive und destruktive Interferenz geeignet sind. Ein Gebäude kann für mehrere Sekunden vibrieren, wenn die Anregungsfrequenz mit der natürlichen Schwingungsfrequenz des Gebäudes übereinstimmt. Dadurch entsteht eine Resonanz, die dazu führt, dass ein Gebäude einstürzt, während die benachbarten Gebäude intakt bleiben. Oft werden Gebäude einer bestimmten Höhe zerstört, während andere höhere Gebäude intakt bleiben. Dieses Phänomen tritt auf, weil die Gebäudehöhe die Voraussetzungen für die Entstehung einer stehenden Welle in dieser Höhe erfüllt. Wenn die Erdbebenwellen entlang der Erdoberfläche wandern und von dichteren Gesteinen reflektiert werden, kommt es zu konstruktiver Interferenz an bestimmten Punkten. Oft werden Gebiete in der Nähe des Epizentrums nicht beschädigt, während Gebiete weiter entfernt beschädigt werden.

Auf der anderen Seite haben stehende Wellen auf Saiten Frequenzen, die mit der Ausbreitungsgeschwindigkeit der Störung auf der Saite zusammenhängen. Der Abstand zwischen den Punkten, an denen die Saite befestigt ist, bestimmt die Wellenlänge. Die symmetrischen Randbedingungen - ein Knoten an jedem Ende - legen die möglichen Frequenzen fest, die stehende Wellen anregen können. Beginnend bei einer Frequenz von Null und allmählich steigender Frequenz erscheint der erste Modus, n = 1. Der erste Modus, auch als Grundmodus oder erste Harmonische bezeichnet, entspricht einer halben Wellenlänge, sodass die Wellenlänge gleich der doppelten Länge zwischen den Knoten ist. Die aufeinanderfolgenden Normalmoden werden Obertöne genannt: Der erste Oberton entspricht der zweiten Harmonischen und so weiter. In diesem Fall zeigt das mathematische Muster, dass die aufeinanderfolgenden harmonischen Frequenzen ganze Vielfache der ersten Harmonischen sind.

Standing waves and resonance can be seen in both earthquakes and strings. Earthquake waves can make a building vibrate for several seconds when the driving frequency matches the building’s natural frequency of vibration. That resonance can cause one building to collapse while nearby buildings stay standing.

Building height also matters because it can match the condition needed to form a standing wave at that height. In many cases, buildings of one height are damaged while taller buildings remain intact. As earthquake waves move along Earth’s surface and reflect from denser rock, constructive interference can occur at specific points. That is why areas closer to the epicenter may not be damaged, while areas farther away are damaged.

Standing waves on a string depend on the speed of the disturbance and the distance between the fixed ends. The ends act as nodes, which are points that do not move, and they set the possible frequencies for the wave. When the frequency starts at zero and is increased slowly, the first mode appears first.

The first mode is also called the fundamental mode or the first harmonic. It contains half a wavelength, so the wavelength is twice the distance between the nodes. Higher modes are called overtones. The first overtone is the second harmonic, and the harmonic frequencies follow an integer pattern based on the first harmonic.

Mechanical Waves in Air, Water, and Earth

Mechanical waves carry a disturbance through a medium. They repeat periodically and are often linked with simple harmonic motion. These waves follow Newton's laws and need a material medium to move through. A medium is the substance that carries the wave and provides an elastic restoring force when it is deformed. Water waves, sound waves, and seismic waves are examples of mechanical waves. In water waves, water is the medium. In sound waves, the medium is usually air, but it can also be water.
