Denken Sie daran, dass Häufigkeitsverteilungstabellen dabei helfen, quantitative Daten mit mehreren Kategorien zu organisieren, z. B. die Anzahl der Bücher in verschiedenen Preisklassen.
Solche Häufigkeitsverteilungstabellen können visuell mit Hilfe von Histogrammen dargestellt werden, einem Diagramm, das aus Balken gleicher Breite besteht, die ohne Lücken gezeichnet werden. 
Die vertikale Achse stellt die Häufigkeiten in jeder Klasse dar, und die horizontale Achse stellt die Klassengrenzen dar. 
Was sind also Klassengrenzen? Das erste Intervall in der Datentabelle zeigt den Preis zwischen 5 und 10 Dollar, und das zweite Intervall bietet die Preisspanne von 11 bis 16. 
Beachten Sie, dass die Preisspanne zwischen 10 und 11 in der Tabelle fehlt. Diese Lücke wird durch die Berechnung ihrer Mittelpunkte, der sogenannten Klassengrenzen, gefüllt.
Diese Klassengrenzen werden auf der horizontalen Achse und die entsprechenden Häufigkeiten auf der vertikalen Achse dargestellt. Die vertikalen Balken, die als Bins bezeichnet werden, verbinden die Klassengrenzen und Häufigkeitswerte.

Ein Histogramm ist eine grafische Darstellung in der x-y-Form, die die Datenverteilung in einem Datensatz zeigt. Die horizontale x-Achse ist mit dem beschriftet, was die Daten darstellen (beispielsweise die Entfernung von Ihrem Zuhause zur Schule). Die vertikale y-Achse ist entweder mit Häufigkeit oder relativer Häufigkeit (oder Prozenthäufigkeit oder Wahrscheinlichkeit) beschriftet. Ein Histogramm besteht aus aneinander angrenzenden Kästen. Die Höhen der Balken entsprechen den Häufigkeitswerten. Das Diagramm wird dieselbe Form mit entsprechenden Beschriftungen haben. Ein Histogramm (ähnlich wie das Stängelblatt) kann die Form, das Zentrum und die Streuung der Daten aufzeigen. Typischerweise verwendet man ein Histogramm, um große, kontinuierliche, quantitative Datensätze darzustellen. Der Hauptvorteil eines Histogramms ist, dass es große Datensätze leicht darstellen kann. Eine Faustregel ist, ein Histogramm zu verwenden, wenn der Datensatz 100 Werte oder mehr umfasst. Um ein Histogramm zu erstellen, kann man entscheiden, wie viele Balken oder Intervalle, auch Klassen genannt, die Daten repräsentieren sollen. Viele Histogramme bestehen aus fünf bis 15 Balken oder Klassen für die Klarheit, doch man kann die Anzahl der Balken wählen, die benötigt werden.

reading data patterns with histograms

A histogram shows how data is distributed in a data set. It uses an x-y graph to display the pattern of the data. The x-axis is labeled with what the data represents, such as distance from home to school. The y-axis shows frequency, relative frequency, percent frequency, or probability.

A histogram is made of adjoining bars. The height of each bar matches the frequency value for that class. Even with different labels, the graph keeps the same overall shape. Like a stemplot, a histogram can show the shape, center, and spread of the data.

Histograms are most useful for large, continuous, quantitative data sets. They can display large data sets clearly and quickly. A common rule of thumb is to use a histogram when a data set has 100 values or more.

To build a histogram, you choose how many bars or intervals, also called classes, will represent the data. Many histograms use five to 15 bars for clarity. The right number depends on the data and the level of detail needed.
