IR-aktive Moleküle weisen zwei grundlegende Schwingungsmodi auf, die zu einer IR-Absorption führen.
Dehnungsschwingungen treten entlang der Klebefuge auf und können die Verbundlänge verändern. Strecken können symmetrisch oder asymmetrisch sein.
Biegeschwingungen verändern den Verbundwinkel und werden in In-Plane- oder Out-of-Plane-Modi unterteilt. Scheren und Schaukeln repräsentieren die erste Art, während Wedeln und Drehen die letztere darstellen.
Die Gesamtzahl der fundamentalen Schwingungen, die für ein nichtlineares Molekül wie Ethanol mit n Anzahl von Atomen zulässig sind, beträgt 3n − 6; für ein lineares Molekül wie HCl sind jedoch nur 3n − 5 fundamentale Schwingungen zulässig.
Die Dehnungs- und Biegeschwingungen einer Bindung treten bei einer charakteristischen fundamentalen Absorptionsfrequenz auf und beinhalten die Anregung von Bindungen vom Grundzustand in den angeregten Zustand mit der niedrigsten Energie.
Integrale Vielfache grundlegender Absorptionsfrequenzen werden als Obertöne bezeichnet.
Durch die Verschmelzung zweier aktiver IR-Schwingungsfrequenzen entsteht ein Kombinationsband.
Die gekoppelte Schwingung, die durch die Wechselwirkung des Grundtonbandes mit dem Oberton- oder Kombinationsband erzeugt wird, erzeugt eine Fermi-Resonanz.

IR Spectroscopy: Molecular Vibration Overview

Wenn Infrarotstrahlung (IR) durch ein Molekül mit kovalenter Bindung geht, wechseln die Bindungen von niedrigeren zu höheren Schwingungsniveaus. Die grundlegenden Schwingungsbewegungen, die zur Absorption von Infrarotstrahlung führen, können als Streck- oder Biegeschwingungen klassifiziert werden.

Streckschwingungen sind Schwingungsbewegungen, die entlang der Bindungslinie auftreten und die Bindungslänge oder den Abstand zwischen zwei gebundenen Atomen verändern. Sie werden außerdem als symmetrisch oder asymmetrisch unterschieden. Bei der symmetrischen Streckung werden durch die gleichzeitige Schwingung zweier Bindungen beide Bindungen verlängert und zusammengezogen. Im Gegensatz dazu bewegt sich bei der asymmetrischen Dehnung eine Bindung in eine Richtung, während sich eine andere Bindung in die entgegengesetzte Richtung bewegt.

Im Gegensatz zur Streckung treten Biegeschwingungen nicht entlang der Bindungslinie auf, sondern verändern den Bindungswinkel. Biegeschwingungen können in Biegeschwingungen in der Ebene und außerhalb der Ebene unterteilt werden. Biegeschwingungen in der Ebene werden als Biegewingungen (symmetrisch) und Schaukelschwingungen (asymmetrisch) kategorisiert, während Biegeschwingungen außerhalb der Ebene als Drehungsschwingungen (symmetrisch) und Wippschwingungen (asymmetrisch) klassifiziert werden.

Bei nichtlinearen Molekülen ergibt sich die Gesamtzahl der zulässigen Grundschwingungen aus der Formel 3n − 6, wobei n die Anzahl der Atome darstellt. Im Gegensatz dazu sind bei linearen Molekülen wie HBr nur 3n − 5 Grundschwingungen zulässig. Bei HBr ist nur eine Schwingungsart möglich.

In der IR-Spektroskopie wird die Frequenz, die der Anregung von Bindungen vom Grundzustand in den angeregten Zustand mit der niedrigsten Energie entspricht, als fundamentale Absorptionsfrequenz bezeichnet. Die ganzzahligen Vielfachen der fundamentalen Absorptionsfrequenzen werden als Obertöne bezeichnet. Jede physikalische Schwingung erzeugt Obertöne in einem Molekül. Das Band, das durch die Kopplung zweier Schwingungsfrequenzen entsteht und IR-aktiv ist, wird als Kombinationsband bezeichnet. Im Vergleich dazu wird das Band, das sich aus der Differenz zwischen zwei Bändern ergibt, als Differenzband bezeichnet. Darüber hinaus bezieht sich Fermiresonanz auf die gekoppelte Schwingung, die durch die Wechselwirkung des Grundbandes mit dem Oberton- oder Kombinationsband entsteht.

IR spectroscopy explains how covalently bonded molecules absorb infrared radiation by moving to higher vibrational levels. The key motions are stretching and bending vibrations. These motions help describe how a bond responds when it absorbs IR energy.

Stretching vibrations happen along the bond line and change the distance between two bonded atoms. They can be symmetric, where two bonds lengthen and shorten together, or asymmetric, where one bond moves one way while another moves the opposite way. Bending vibrations do not occur along the bond line. Instead, they change the bond angle.

Bending vibrations are grouped into in-plane and out-of-plane motion. In-plane bending includes scissoring, which is symmetric, and rocking, which is asymmetric. Out-of-plane bending includes twisting, which is symmetric, and wagging, which is asymmetric.

The number of allowed fundamental vibrations depends on molecular shape. Nonlinear molecules have 3n − 6 fundamental vibrations, where n is the number of atoms. Linear molecules such as HBr have 3n − 5 fundamental vibrations, and HBr has only one possible vibration.

IR spectroscopy also uses terms for vibrational bands. The lowest-energy transition from the ground state is called the fundamental absorption frequency. Integral multiples of that frequency are overtones. A band formed by the fusion of two vibrational frequencies is a combination band, while a band from their difference is a difference band. Fermi resonance is the coupled vibration that occurs when a fundamental band interacts with an overtone or combination band.
