IR-active molecules exhibit two fundamental modes of vibration that result in IR absorption.
Stretching vibrations occur along the bond line and can change the bond length. Stretches can be symmetric or asymmetric.
Bending vibrations change the bond angle and are subdivided into in-plane or out-of-plane modes. Scissoring and rocking represent the former type, whereas wagging and twisting represent the latter.
The total number of fundamental vibrations allowed for a nonlinear molecule like ethanol containing n number of atoms is 3n &#8722; 6; however, only 3n &#8722; 5 fundamental vibrations are allowed for a linear molecule such as HCl.
A bond&#39;s stretching and bending vibrations occur at a characteristic fundamental absorption frequency and involve the excitation of bonds from the ground state to the lowest energy excited state.
Integral multiples of fundamental absorption frequencies are termed overtones.
The fusion of two IR active vibrational frequencies produces a combination band.
The coupled vibration generated by the interaction of the fundamental band with the overtone or combination band produces Fermi resonance.

When Infrared (IR) radiation passes through a covalently bonded molecule, the bonds transition from lower to higher vibrational levels. The fundamental vibrational motions that result in infrared absorption can be classified as stretching or bending vibrations.
Stretching vibrations are vibrational motions that occur along the bond line, changing the bond length or distance between two bonded atoms. They are further distinguished as symmetric or asymmetric. In symmetric stretching, the simultaneous vibration of two bonds elongates and contracts together. In contrast, asymmetric stretching involves one bond moving in one direction while another bond moves in the opposite direction.
Unlike stretching, bending vibrations do not occur along the bond line; instead, they change the bond angle. Bending vibrations can be divided into in-plane and out-of-plane bending. In-plane bending vibrations are categorized as scissoring (symmetric) and rocking (asymmetric), while out-of-plane bending is classified as twisting (symmetric) and wagging (asymmetric).
For nonlinear molecules, the total number of allowed fundamental vibrations is given by the formula 3n &#8722; 6, where n represents the number of atoms. In contrast, linear molecules like HBr allow only 3n &#8722; 5 fundamental vibrations. For HBr, only one type of vibration is possible.
In IR spectroscopy, the frequency corresponding to the excitation of bonds from the ground state to the lowest energy excited state is called fundamental absorption frequency. The integral multiples of the fundamental absorption frequencies are called overtones. Any physical vibration generates overtones in a molecule. The band produced due to the fusion of two vibrational frequencies, which is IR active, is called a combination band. In comparison, the band resulting from the difference between two bands is called a difference band. Additionally, fermi resonance refers to the coupled vibration created by the interaction of the fundamental band with the either overtone or combination band.

IR spectroscopy explains how covalently bonded molecules absorb infrared radiation by moving to higher vibrational levels. The key motions are stretching and bending vibrations. These motions help describe how a bond responds when it absorbs IR energy.

Stretching vibrations happen along the bond line and change the distance between two bonded atoms. They can be symmetric, where two bonds lengthen and shorten together, or asymmetric, where one bond moves one way while another moves the opposite way. Bending vibrations do not occur along the bond line. Instead, they change the bond angle.

Bending vibrations are grouped into in-plane and out-of-plane motion. In-plane bending includes scissoring, which is symmetric, and rocking, which is asymmetric. Out-of-plane bending includes twisting, which is symmetric, and wagging, which is asymmetric.

The number of allowed fundamental vibrations depends on molecular shape. Nonlinear molecules have 3n − 6 fundamental vibrations, where n is the number of atoms. Linear molecules such as HBr have 3n − 5 fundamental vibrations, and HBr has only one possible vibration.

IR spectroscopy also uses terms for vibrational bands. The lowest-energy transition from the ground state is called the fundamental absorption frequency. Integral multiples of that frequency are overtones. A band formed by the fusion of two vibrational frequencies is a combination band, while a band from their difference is a difference band. Fermi resonance is the coupled vibration that occurs when a fundamental band interacts with an overtone or combination band.
