Die Fragmentierung durch ⍺-Spaltung führt zur Bildung eines Alkylradikals und eines Acylium-Kations.
Auf der anderen Seite ergibt die Fragmentierung durch induktive Spaltung einen Acylrest und ein Alkylkation.
Wenn die Carbonylverbindung eine McLafferty-Umlagerung erfährt, ergibt sie ein Radikalkation und ein neutrales Alken.
Betrachten Sie das Massenspektrum von 5-Methyl-2-hexanon, bei dem das Molekülion durch induktive Spaltung zu einem Alkylkation mit einem Masse-Ladungs-Verhältnis von 71 fragmentiert.
Der Basenpeak bei einem Masse-Ladungs-Verhältnis von 43 entspricht der ⍺-Spaltung.

In der Massenspektrometrie erfolgt die Fragmentierung von aliphatischen Aldehyden und Ketonen im Allgemeinen durch drei Hauptmechanismen: α-Spaltung, induktive Spaltung und McLafferty-Umlagerung.

	<li style="magin-bottom:25px;">α-Spaltung: Die α-Spaltung ist eine häufige Fragmentierung in Carbonylverbindungen, bei der die Bindung neben der Carbonylgruppe aufgebrochen wird. Dieser Prozess erzeugt ein Alkylradikal und ein Acyliumkation, das aufgrund seiner Stabilität häufig im Massenspektrum nachgewiesen wird.</li>
	<li style="magin-bottom:25px;"> Induktive Spaltung: Bei der induktiven Spaltung ergibt die Fragmentierung ein Acylradikal und ein Alkylkation. Dies geschieht, wenn Elektronen in Richtung des Carbonyls gezogen werden, wodurch benachbarte Bindungen geschwächt werden und ein charakteristisches Fragmentierungsmuster entsteht. Beispielsweise entsteht im Massenspektrum von 5-Methyl-2-hexanon durch induktive Spaltung ein Alkylkation mit einem Masse-zu-Ladung-Verhältnis (m/z) von 71.</li>
	<li style="magin-bottom:25px;">McLafferty-Umlagerung: Die McLafferty-Umlagerung ist ein spezifisches Fragmentierungsmuster für Carbonylverbindungen mit γ-Wasserstoff (Wasserstoff am dritten Kohlenstoff der Carbonylgruppe). Das Molekül durchläuft bei dieser Umlagerung einen sechsgliedrigen zyklischen Übergang, der ein Radikalkation und ein neutrales Alken ergibt. Bei 5-Methyl-2-hexanon führt diese Umlagerung zu einem Peak bei m/z 58.</li>

Ein weiteres diagnostisches Merkmal bei Aldehyden ist der M−1-Peak, der durch die α-Spaltung des Aldehydprotons entsteht. Bei der massenspektrometrischen Analyse kann dieser Peak dabei helfen, Aldehyde zu identifizieren, insbesondere unter anderen Carbonylverbindungen.

Aliphatic aldehydes and ketones break apart in mass spectrometry through a few key carbonyl fragment patterns. The main pathways are alpha-cleavage, inductive cleavage, and the McLafferty rearrangement. These patterns help chemists read the mass spectrum and spot a carbonyl group.

Alpha-cleavage is a common break next to the carbonyl group. The bond beside the carbonyl splits, and this forms an alkyl radical and an acylium cation. The acylium cation is often seen in the spectrum because it is stable.

Inductive cleavage gives a different pair of fragments. In this case, the result is an acyl radical and an alkyl cation. The carbonyl group pulls electrons toward itself, weakens nearby bonds, and creates a distinctive pattern. In 5-methyl-2-hexanone, this pathway gives an alkyl cation at m/z 71.

The McLafferty rearrangement is a special pattern seen in carbonyl compounds with a gamma-hydrogen. A gamma-hydrogen is a hydrogen on the third carbon away from the carbonyl group. The molecule passes through a six-membered cyclic transition and forms a radical cation plus a neutral alkene. For 5-methyl-2-hexanone, this rearrangement gives a peak at m/z 58.

5-methyl-2-hexanone shows all three features in one spectrum. Inductive cleavage produces the m/z 71 ion, alpha-cleavage gives the base peak at m/z 43, and the McLafferty rearrangement gives a peak at m/z 58. Aldehydes also have a useful diagnostic signal. An M-minus-1 peak can appear from alpha-cleavage of the aldehyde proton, and it can help identify aldehydes among other carbonyl compounds.
