Bei der Aldol-Kondensation handelt es sich um eine Aldol-Additionsreaktion, gefolgt von einer Dehydratisierung. 
Bei der Aldol-Additionsreaktion interagieren zwei identische Aldehyde unter sauren oder basischen Bedingungen zu einem β-Hydroxyaldehyd als Ausgangsprodukt. Dabei wirkt ein Aldehyd als Nukleophil und der andere als Elektrophil, wodurch eine neue Kohlenstoff-Kohlenstoff-Bindung entsteht.
Der Name Aldol leitet sich von dem Vorhandensein sowohl von Alkohol- als auch von Aldehyd-Funktionsgruppen ab – "ald" steht für Aldehyd und "ol" für Alkohol.
Wie Aldehyde durchlaufen auch zwei identische Ketone eine Aldol-Additionsreaktion, bei der ein β-Hydroxyketon entsteht.
Die Bildung der β-Hydroxycarbonylverbindung ist reversibel.
Unter geeigneten Reaktionsbedingungen dehydrieren jedoch die β-Hydroxyaldehyd und das Keton zu einem Enal bzw. einem Enon.
Eine Aldolkondensation zwischen zwei verschiedenen Carbonylverbindungen wird als gekreuzte Aldolreaktion bezeichnet. Eine solche Reaktion ergibt eine Mischung von Produkten.

Die Aldolkondensation ist ein wichtiger Weg in der synthetischen organischen Chemie, der zur Bildung einer neuen Kohlenstoff-Kohlenstoff-Bindung unter basischen oder sauren Bedingungen eingesetzt wird. Die in Abbildung 1 dargestellte Aldolkondensationsreaktion stellt eine Aldoladditionsreaktion dar, an die sich der Dehydratisierungsprozess anschließt.

Aldol-Additionsreaktionen sind reversibel und lassen sich in zwei Typen unterteilen: Selbstaddition und Kreuzaddition. Die Kombination zweier identischer Carbonylverbindungen wird Selbstaddition genannt. Wie in Abbildung 2 dargestellt, wird die Reaktion zwischen zwei verschiedenen Carbonylverbindungen als Kreuzaddition bezeichnet. Von den beiden an der Reaktion beteiligten Carbonylverbindungen fungiert eine als Nukleophil und die andere als Elektrophil.

Die beiden Arten von Aldoladditionsreaktionen erzeugen ein β-Hydroxycarbonyl als Aldoladditionsprodukt. Während eine Selbstadditionsreaktion ein einzelnes Aldolprodukt ergibt, führt eine Kreuzaddition zu einer Produktmischung, was den Nutzen der Reaktion in der organischen Chemie verringert. Dementsprechend ist die Wahl der Reaktanten für die Wirksamkeit der Reaktion von größter Bedeutung.

Aldol condensation forms a new carbon-carbon bond in synthetic organic chemistry. It can occur under basic or acidic conditions. The reaction shown here includes an aldol addition step followed by dehydration.

Aldol addition reactions are reversible. They can happen by self-addition or crossed-addition. In self-addition, two identical carbonyl compounds react with each other. In crossed-addition, two different carbonyl compounds react. In that case, one carbonyl compound acts as the nucleophile and the other acts as the electrophile.

Both aldol addition paths produce a β-hydroxy carbonyl as the aldol addition product. A self-addition reaction gives a single aldol product. A crossed-addition often gives a mixture of products, which lowers its usefulness in organic chemistry. For that reason, choosing the right reactants is important for the reaction to work well.

The β-hydroxy carbonyl can then undergo dehydration under suitable conditions. This step removes water and forms the corresponding condensation product. Together, these steps describe the aldol condensation process.
