Das β-Hydroxyketon dehydriert unter sauren Bedingungen über eine E1-Eliminierungsreaktion zu einem Enon.
Die E1-Eliminierung verläuft in zwei verschiedenen Schritten: Ionisation und Deprotonierung.
Im ersten Schritt fungiert die Hydroxylgruppe in Gegenwart einer Säure als Bronsted-Lowry-Base und nimmt ein Proton auf, um eine hydratisierte Hydroxylgruppe zu erhalten. Dann verschwindet ein neutrales Wassermolekül, um ein tertiäres Carbokationszwischenprodukt zu erhalten.
Schließlich abstrahiert das Chloridion das Wasserstoffatom vom α Kohlenstoff, um als Produkt ein Enon zu bilden.

Figure 2 zeigt die sequentiellen Prozesse, die am Mechanismus der Reaktion beteiligt sind. Hier protoniert die Säure die Hydroxylgruppe im β-Hydroxyketon, um eine hydratisierte Hydroxylgruppe zu bilden, die sich dann abspaltet und ein tertiäres Carbokation-Zwischenprodukt bildet. Anschließend führt der Verlust des Wasserstoffatoms vom α-Kohlenstoff zu einem Enon als Endprodukt.

The mechanism happens in steps. First, the acid protonates the hydroxyl group on the β-hydroxy ketone. This makes it a hydrated hydroxyl group that can leave more easily. After that group departs, a tertiary carbocation intermediate forms.

Next, a hydrogen atom is removed from the α carbon. This final step produces the enone. The sequence shows how acid helps the molecule change from a β-hydroxy ketone into an enone.
