Das Enol-Tautomer von Carbonylverbindungen kann eine Nitrosierungsreaktion durchlaufen, bei der eine zweite Carbonylgruppe eingeführt wird, um ein 1,2-Diketon zu bilden. Diese Nitrosierungsreaktion erfolgt über einen mehrstufigen Mechanismus.
Anfangs entsteht aus Natriumnitrit in Salzsäure die schwache Säure "salpetrige Säure", die bei der Protonierung ein Oxoniumion ergibt.
Durch den Verlust von Wasser aus dem Oxonium-Ion entsteht ein Nitrosonium-Ion mit einem elektrophilen Stickstoff. Der Stickstoff ist also anfällig für einen nukleophilen Angriff durch das Enol, wodurch eine instabile Nitrosoverbindung entsteht.
Die Nitrosoverbindung wird einer Tautomerisierung unterzogen, bei der Wasserstoff, der an den stickstoffhaltigen Kohlenstoff gebunden ist, auf den Sauerstoff der Nitrosogruppe übertragen wird, wodurch ein Oxim entsteht. Eine Wasserstoffbrücke zwischen der Hydroxylgruppe des Oxims und dem Carbonylsauerstoff des Ketons stabilisiert das Oxim.
Schließlich entsteht durch die Hydrolyse des Oxims das 1,2-Diketon-Produkt.
Unsymmetrische Carbonylverbindungen durchlaufen Nitrosierungsreaktionen am stärker substituierten Kohlenstoffatom, wobei 2,3-Diketone als Produkt entstehen.

Die Stabilität des Oxims beruht auf der Wasserstoffbrücke zwischen der Hydroxylgruppe des Oxims und dem Carbonylsauerstoff des Ketons. Durch Hydrolyse des Oxims entsteht als Endprodukt das 1,2-Diketon.

Nitrosation of enols is a route for making 1,2-diketones. In this reaction, the enol tautomer of a ketone reacts with sodium nitrite in hydrochloric acid. After hydrolysis, the product is a 1,2-diketone.

The reaction begins when hydrochloric acid converts sodium nitrite into an oxonium ion. The loss of a water molecule from this intermediate forms the nitrosonium ion. This ion is the electrophile, meaning it accepts electrons in the next step.

The enol tautomer then attacks the nitrosonium ion. This step gives an unstable nitroso compound. The nitroso compound can tautomerize, which means a hydrogen atom moves from carbon to the oxygen of the nitroso group.

This hydrogen shift forms a stable oxime. The oxime is stabilized by a hydrogen bond between its hydroxyl group and the ketone carbonyl oxygen. Hydrolysis of the oxime then produces the final 1,2-diketone.

The reaction is regioselective. That means the second carbonyl group is added mainly at the more-substituted carbon. This selectivity helps determine where the new diketone group appears in the product.
