Electromagnetic Waves

Betrachten Sie eine statische elektrische Ladung. Es erzeugt ein stationäres elektrisches Feld um sich herum. Wenn sich die Ladung in Bewegung setzt, wird zusätzlich ein Magnetfeld erzeugt, das orthogonal zur Richtung der sich bewegenden Ladung verläuft.

Nach dem Faradayschen Gesetz erzeugt ein zeitlich veränderliches Magnetfeld wiederum ein elektrisches Feld, und dieser Prozess setzt sich fort.
Die sequentielle Induktion beider Felder führt zu selbsterhaltenden elektrischen und magnetischen Feldern in Regionen, die weiter von ihrem Ursprung entfernt sind.
Diese Felder breiten sich durch den Raum aus und erzeugen elektromagnetische Wellen, die kein Medium benötigen, um diese Bewegung aufrechtzuerhalten.
Die erzeugten elektromagnetischen Wellen haben die gleiche Frequenz wie die Schwingungsfrequenz der beschleunigten elektrischen Ladung.
Diese Wellen sind transversal, da die Bestandteile des elektrischen und magnetischen Feldes senkrecht zueinander und in Phase zueinander schwingen und auch senkrecht zur Ausbreitungsrichtung stehen.

Um zu sehen, wie die von Maxwell eingeführte Symmetrie die Existenz kombinierter elektrischer und magnetischer Wellen erklärt, die sich durch den Raum ausbreiten, stellen Sie sich ein sich zeitlich veränderndes magnetisches Feld vor, das durch einen hochfrequenten Wechselstrom erzeugt wird. Nach dem Faradayschen Gesetz induziert das sich ändernde Magnetfeld durch eine Oberfläche ein zeitlich veränderliches elektrisches Feld an der Grenze dieser Oberfläche. Die Quelle des Verschiebungsstroms für das elektrische Feld erzeugt ebenso wie die Quelle des Faradays-Gesetzes für das magnetische Feld aufgrund der mathematischen Symmetrie der Gleichungen für induzierte elektrische und induzierte magnetische Felder nur geschlossene Schleifen von Feldlinien. Das sich ändernde elektrische Feld erzeugt wiederum ein magnetisches Feld nach dem modifizierten Ampers'schen Gesetz. Dieses veränderliche Feld induziert ein weiteres elektrisches Feld, das wiederum ein weiteres magnetisches Feld induziert, und so weiter. Es handelt sich also um einen sich selbst fortsetzenden Prozess, der zur Entstehung von zeitlich veränderlichen elektrischen und magnetischen Feldern in Regionen führt, die immer weiter von dem Punkt entfernt sind, an dem sie zuerst entstanden sind. Diesen Prozess kann man sich als Ausbreitung einer elektromagnetischen Welle durch den Raum vorstellen.

Maxwell’s equations explain how electric and magnetic fields work together to create electromagnetic waves. James Clerk Maxwell brought together the ideas of Oersted, Coulomb, Gauss, and Faraday and built a single theory of electromagnetism. Together with the Lorentz force law, his equations describe the laws of electricity and magnetism.

A key part of Maxwell’s work is the symmetry in the equations. Faraday’s law shows that a changing magnetic field produces an electric field. Maxwell added the displacement current, which comes from a changing electric field and produces a magnetic field.

The two equations are similar in form, except for the missing terms caused by the absence of magnetic monopoles. This symmetry between changing magnetic fields and changing electric fields is what makes electromagnetic waves possible. It helps explain how combined electric and magnetic waves can move through space.

One way to picture this process is to imagine a high-frequency alternating current that creates a time-varying magnetic field. Faraday’s law says that this changing magnetic field induces a time-varying electric field around the edge of the surface. The displacement current source for the electric field, like the source in Faraday’s law for the magnetic field, produces only closed loops of field lines.

The changing electric field then creates a magnetic field by the modified Ampère’s law. That changing magnetic field induces another electric field, which then induces another magnetic field. This repeating process continues outward from where it started and creates time-varying electric and magnetic fields farther and farther away. This is the propagation of an electromagnetic wave through space.
