The Electromagnetic Spectrum

Das elektromagnetische Spektrum ist die Verteilung elektromagnetischer Wellen entsprechend ihrer Wellenlänge oder Frequenz. Dazu gehören Radiowellen, Mikrowellen, Infrarotstrahlung, sichtbares Licht, ultraviolette Strahlen, Röntgen- und Gammastrahlen.
Radiowellen haben die längste Wellenlänge im Spektrum, die von Millimetern bis zu Kilometern reicht. Sie werden durch beschleunigte elektrische Ladungen erzeugt und fungieren als Träger für die Übertragung von Informationen.
Ein Mikrowellenherd erzeugt Mikrowellen, die Lebensmittel erhitzen.
Beheizte Oberflächen geben Infrarotstrahlung ab. Fernbedienungen verwenden Infrarotstrahlung mit einer Wellenlänge von etwa 0,9 Mikrometern.
Eine Glühbirne emittiert sichtbare Strahlung mit Wellenlängen von 0,4 bis 0,7 Mikrometern.
Ultraviolette Strahlen mit einer Wellenlänge von etwa 0,35 Mikrometern werden verwendet, um Insekten zu töten.

Wellen klassifiziert. Radiowellen beziehen sich auf elektromagnetische Strahlung mit Wellenlängen von Millimetern bis Kilometern. Radiowellen werden häufig für die Audio-Kommunikation (z. B. Radios) verwendet und entstehen typischerweise durch einen Wechselstrom in den Drähten einer Sendeantenne. Sie decken einen breiten Wellenlängenbereich ab und werden für AM (amplitudenmodulierte) und FM (frequenzmodulierte) Radio-, Mobiltelefon- und Fernsehsignale verwendet. Mikrowellen sind die Hochfrequenz elektromagnetischer Wellen und werden durch Ströme in makroskopischen Schaltungen und Geräten erzeugt. Die Frequenzbereiche von Mikrowellen reichen von etwa 109 Hz bis fast 1012 Hz. Die meiste über Satellit übertragene Information wird in Mikrowellen übertragen. Das Radar ist eine häufige Anwendung von Mikrowellen. Durch die Detektion und Zeitmessung der Mikrowellen-Echos können Radar-Systeme die Entfernung zu Objekten wie Wolken, Flugzeugen oder sogar der Oberfläche der Venus bestimmen.

Infrarotstrahlung wird im Allgemeinen durch thermische Bewegung sowie die Vibration und Rotation von Atomen und Molekülen erzeugt. Etwa die Hälfte der auf die Erde treffenden Sonnenenergie befindet sich im Infrarotbereich, der Großteil davon im sichtbaren Teil des Spektrums. Aufklärungssatelliten können Gebäude, Fahrzeuge und sogar einzelne Menschen anhand ihrer Infrarotstrahlung erkennen.

Sichtbares Licht ist das schmale Segment des elektromagnetischen Spektrums, auf das das menschliche Auge normalerweise reagiert. Wir bezeichnen sichtbares Licht normalerweise als Wellenlängen zwischen 400 nm und 750 nm. Röntgenstrahlen werden durch innere atomare Übergänge und schnelle Kollisionen erzeugt. Sie werden verwendet, um Objekte abzubilden, die für sichtbares Licht undurchsichtig sind, wie den menschlichen Körper oder Flugzeugteile. Electromagnetic waves are grouped by wavelength and frequency. This set of waves is called the electromagnetic spectrum. It includes radio waves, microwaves, infrared, visible light, X-rays, and gamma rays.

Radio waves have wavelengths from millimeters to kilometers. They are often used for audio communication, such as radios. In many cases, they come from alternating current in the wires of a broadcast antenna. Radio waves also carry AM and FM radio, cellular phone signals, and TV signals.

Microwaves are the highest-frequency electromagnetic waves. They are produced by currents in macroscopic circuits and devices. Their frequencies range from about 10^9 Hz to nearly 10^12 Hz. Most satellite-transmitted information is carried in microwaves, and radar is a common use. Radar measures the time of microwave echoes to find the distance to objects such as clouds, aircraft, or even the surface of Venus.

Infrared radiation is usually produced by thermal motion and by the vibration and rotation of atoms and molecules. About half of the solar energy that reaches Earth is in the infrared region. Most of the rest is in visible light. Infrared emissions can also be used by reconnaissance satellites to detect buildings, vehicles, and even individual humans.

Visible light is the narrow part of the spectrum that the normal human eye can detect. It has wavelengths between about 400 nm and 750 nm. X-rays come from intra-atomic transitions and fast collisions. They can image objects that are opaque to visible light, such as the human body or aircraft parts. Gamma rays are produced during nuclear decay and have the highest frequency in the electromagnetic spectrum.
