Apparent Weight

Stellen Sie sich einen Aufzug im Ruhezustand vor, mit einem Kasten auf einer Waage. Die Waage zeigt Null an, und das Feld erscheint schwerelos. Dieses Phänomen wird als scheinbare Schwerelosigkeit bezeichnet.

Das wahre Gewicht ist das Maß für die auf ein Objekt wirkende Gravitationskraft. Wenn sich das Objekt jedoch beschleunigt, ist sein gemessenes Gewicht unterschiedlich von seinem wahren Gewicht. Ähnliche Beobachtungen können gemacht werden, wenn das Objekt in Wasser eingetaucht ist. Das Gewicht eines Objekts im Wasser ist sein scheinbares Gewicht, welches gleich der Differenz zwischen seinem wahren Gewicht und den Auftriebskräften ist.

Betrachten wir eine Person, die auf einer Badezimmerwaage in einem Aufzug steht. Wenn die Waage im Ruhezustand genau ist, entspricht ihr Messwert der Größe der nach unten wirkenden Kraft, die die Person auf sie ausübt. Die einzigen Kräfte, die auf die Person wirken, sind ihr Gewicht und die nach oben wirkende Normalkraft der Waage. Im Ruhezustand ist die resultierende Kraft auf die Person null. Gemäß dem dritten Newtonschen Gesetz sind Gewicht und Normalkraft gleich groß und entgegengesetzt gerichtet, sodass die Normalkraft dem wahren Gewicht der Person entspricht. Die Badezimmerwaage zeigt die von der Waage auf die Person ausgeübte Normalkraft an.

Wenn der Aufzug mit konstanter Beschleunigung nach oben fährt, ist das scheinbare Gewicht größer als das wahre Gewicht, da die resultierende Kraft, die auf es wirkt, größer als null ist. Wenn der Aufzug jedoch abbremst, ist das scheinbare Gewicht des Objekts kleiner als sein wahres Gewicht, da die resultierende Kraft, die auf das Objekt wirkt, negativ ist. Wenn der Aufzug sich im freien Fall befindet, fühlt sich die Person gewichtslos, da sie und der Aufzug unter der Gravitationsbeschleunigung fallen. Dieses Phänomen wird als scheinbare Schwerelosigkeit bezeichnet.

Die "Schwerelosigkeit", die Menschen in einer der Erde nahe gelegenen Satellitenumlaufbahn erfahren, ist dieselbe scheinbare Schwerelosigkeit wie in einem freien Fall befindlicher Aufzug. Die Schwerkraft sorgt dafür, dass der Satellit "aus seiner natürlichen geraden Bahn" fällt. Scale readings can change when an object is moving or submerged in water. The force we call true weight is the gravitational force acting on an object. When motion or fluid forces are present, the reading can differ from that true weight. In water, this changed reading is called apparent weight, and it equals true weight minus the buoyant force.

A bathroom scale in an elevator shows how this works. At rest, the scale reads the force the person pushes downward on it. The only forces on the person are weight and the upward normal force from the scale. Because the net force is zero, the normal force matches the person’s true weight.

If the elevator accelerates upward with constant acceleration, the apparent weight becomes greater than the true weight. The net force on the person is then greater than zero. If the elevator decelerates, the apparent weight becomes less than the true weight. In that case, the net force on the person is negative.

If the elevator is in free fall, the person feels weightless. This is called apparent weightlessness. The same effect happens for people in a satellite orbit close to Earth. Gravity still acts on the satellite and on the objects inside it. But both the satellite and the objects are falling together, so they experience apparent weightlessness just like a free-falling elevator.
