Characteristics of Fluids

Die Untersuchung starrer Körper beschränkt sich auf Festkörper, da Flüssigkeiten und Gase keine bestimmte Form haben und sich an den verfügbaren Raum um sie herum anpassen. Aus diesem Grund werden sie zusammenfassend als Flüssigkeiten bezeichnet.
Kräfte, die tangential auf eine Fläche ausgeübt werden, werden als Schubkräfte bezeichnet. Feststoffe widerstehen Scherkräften, aber Flüssigkeiten verformen sich kontinuierlich, wenn eine Scherkraft ausgeübt wird.
In Festkörpern liegen die Moleküle dicht beieinander, und die starken Kräfte zwischen den Molekülen machen sie inkompressibel.
Flüssigkeiten haben große intermolekulare Abstände und schwache intermolekulare Kräfte, die es den Molekülen ermöglichen, sich frei zu bewegen.
Unter den Flüssigkeiten haben Flüssigkeiten ein bestimmtes Volumen und sind inkompressibel. Allerdings ist der Abstand zwischen den Molekülen in Gasen viel größer. Aus diesem Grund haben Gase kein bestimmtes Volumen und sind stark komprimierbar.
Die Strömungsmechanik ist die Lehre vom Verhalten von Fluiden, die grob in zwei Zweige eingeteilt werden kann. Die Strömungsstatik befasst sich mit der Lehre von den Eigenschaften ruhender Flüssigkeiten, und die Strömungsdynamik befasst sich mit der Lehre von Fluiden in Bewegung.

Wenn eine Kraft parallel zur Oberfläche eines Festkörpers aufgebracht wird, widersteht dieser der aufgebrachten Kraft aufgrund der inneren Reibungskräfte zwischen den Schichten des Festkörpers, die als Scherwiderstand bekannt sind. Wenn die Kraft jedoch entfernt wird, stellen die Scherkräfte die ursprüngliche Form des Festkörpers wieder her. Auch andere Verformungskräfte führen zu vorübergehenden Formveränderungen, wenn die Kräfte einen bestimmten Schwellenwert nicht überschreiten. Festkörper neigen dazu, ihre Form beizubehalten, was die Untersuchung ihrer Ruhe und Bewegung erleichtert. Übersteigt die Kraft den Schwellenwert, werden die Festkörper dauerhaft verändert.

Im Gegensatz zu Feststoffen widerstehen Flüssigkeiten und Gase äußeren Kräften nicht auf die gleiche Weise. Aufgrund der äußeren Kräfte strömen Flüssigkeiten und Gase. Daher werden Flüssigkeiten und Gase gemeinsam als Fluide bezeichnet. Das Studium der Fluide wird als Fluidmechanik bezeichnet, die in Fluidstatik und Fluiddynamik unterteilt ist - das Studium der Fluide im Ruhezustand und in Bewegung.

Der wesentliche Unterschied zwischen Feststoffen und Fluiden liegt in ihrer molekularen Struktur. Die Moleküle in einem Feststoff werden durch zwischenmolekulare Kräfte fest zusammengehalten, wodurch Feststoffe ihre ursprüngliche Form beibehalten, wenn eine äußere Kraft entfernt wird. Die zwischenmolekularen Kräfte sind in Fluiden im Vergleich zu Feststoffen viel schwächer. Fluide Moleküle gleiten leicht gegeneinander oder können sich vollständig voneinander trennen und behalten nicht ihre Form. Fluide nehmen die Form des Behälters an, in dem sie sich befinden. Außerdem sind Gase stark komprimierbar - ihre Dichte ändert sich deutlich aufgrund einer Änderung des Volumens.

fluid behavior under force

Fluid behavior under force differs from the behavior of solids. When a force acts parallel to the top surface of a solid, the solid resists it because of internal friction between its layers. This is called shearing resistance. If the force is removed, the shearing forces help the solid return to its original shape.

Other deformation forces can also change the shape of a solid for a short time, as long as the force stays below a threshold magnitude. Solids usually keep their shape, which makes their rest and motion easier to study. If the force goes beyond that threshold, the solid can undergo permanent change.

Liquids and gases do not resist external forces in the same way. Under applied force, they flow instead of holding a fixed shape. Because of this behavior, liquids and gases are grouped together as fluids. Fluids take the shape of the container they are placed in.

The study of fluids is called fluid mechanics. It is divided into fluid statics, which looks at fluids at rest, and fluid dynamics, which looks at fluids in motion. The main difference between solids and fluids comes from molecular structure. In solids, molecules are tightly held together by intermolecular forces, while these forces are much weaker in fluids.

Fluid molecules can slide past one another or separate more easily, so they do not retain a fixed shape. Gases are especially compressible. Their density can change a lot when their volume changes.
