Die Umdrehung des Mondes um die Erde deutet auf das Vorhandensein einer Kraft hin, die ihn in Richtung des Zentrums der Umlaufbahn zieht.
Issac Newton schlug vor, dass diese Anziehungskraft die gleiche ist wie diejenige, die einen Apfel zum Boden zieht.
Es war eine revolutionäre Idee, da man glaubte, dass Himmelsobjekte und Objekte auf der Erde unterschiedlichen Regeln folgen.
Der Mond braucht 27,3 Tage, um die Erde zu umkreisen. Unter Berücksichtigung der durchschnittlichen Entfernung zum Mond kann seine Beschleunigung abgeschätzt werden. 
Das Verhältnis der Mondbeschleunigung zur Beschleunigung eines auf die Erde fallenden Objekts zeigt an, dass die Beschleunigung umgekehrt proportional zur Entfernung zum Quadrat ist.
Da Kraft Masse mal Beschleunigung ist, ist die Gravitationskraft direkt proportional zur Masse und umgekehrt proportional zur Entfernung zum Quadrat.
Newton beobachtete, dass die Beschleunigung von Planeten umgekehrt mit ihrer Entfernung von der Sonne abnimmt, und sagte voraus, dass die Gravitationskraft zwischen der Sonne, den Planeten und ihren Monden wirkt.
Indem er dieses Argument auf alle Objekte im Universum ausdehnte, formulierte Newton das Gesetz der universellen Gravitation.

In den Jahren vor Newton herrschte der allgemeine Glaube, dass Objekte am Himmel anderen Gesetzen unterliegen würden als Objekte auf der Erde. Als Kepler die drei Gesetze der planetaren Bewegung aufschrieb und detailliert die geometrischen Eigenschaften der Planetenbahnen um die Sonne erklärte, gab es keine unmittelbare Idee, ihren Zusammenhang mit grundlegenden Gesetzen zu erkennen. Es war Isaac Newton, der in den Jahren 1665-66 den Zusammenhang zwischen der planetaren Bewegung, der Bewegung des Mondes um die Erde und dem alltäglichen Phänomen von Objekten, die auf die Erdoberfläche fallen, herausfand. Dieses universelle Phänomen ist heute als Gravitation bekannt.

Obwohl es heute selbstverständlich klingt, war die Aussage, dass das gleiche Phänomen die Bewegung von Objekten auf der Erde und die Bewegung des Mondes um die Erde regelt, in Newtons Zeiten revolutionär. Er fand heraus, dass die Beschleunigung des zentripetalen Mondes um die Erde und die Beschleunigung aufgrund der Schwerkraft ein Verhältnis haben, das proportional zum Quadrat des jeweiligen Abstands des Objekts von der Erde ist. Da die Beschleunigung unabhängig von der Masse ist, muss nach seinen Bewegungsgesetzen die Kraft proportional zur Masse sein. Diese Erkenntnis führte ihn zur Formulierung des nach ihm benannten Gravitationsgesetzes.

Eine weitere Information, die benötigt wurde, um das Gravitationsgesetz von Newton zu vervollständigen, war die experimentell abgeleitete Gravitationskonstante. Das erste erfolgreiche Experiment zur Messung der Konstante wurde von Henry Cavendish durchgeführt. Sobald der Wert dieser Konstante zusammen mit Newtons Bewegungsgesetzen bekannt war, konnten Keplers Gesetze der planetaren Bewegung abgeleitet werden.

Newton’s law of gravitation links falling objects, the Moon’s orbit, and planetary motion. Before Newton, many people thought the sky and Earth followed different laws. Kepler later described the three laws of planetary motion, but their connection to a deeper force was still unclear.

Isaac Newton made that connection in 1665 to 1666. He showed that the same phenomenon explains why objects fall to Earth and why the Moon moves around Earth. He also found that the Moon’s centripetal acceleration and the acceleration due to gravity follow an inverse-square relationship with distance from Earth.

Newton used this idea with his laws of motion to build the law of gravitation. Because acceleration does not depend on mass, the force must be proportional to mass. The law also needs the gravitational constant, which was measured experimentally.

Henry Cavendish carried out the first successful experiment to measure that constant. Once its value was known, Newton’s laws of motion could be combined with gravitation to derive Kepler’s laws of planetary motion. This made gravitation a key link between everyday motion and the motion of the planets.
