Speed of a Transverse Wave

Stellen Sie sich ein flexibles gespanntes Seil in einer Gleichgewichtsposition mit einer linearen Massendichte μ und einer Zugkraft T vor.
Wenn am rechten Ende eine konstante Aufwärtskraft ausgeübt wird, bewegt sich eine Querwelle mit konstanter Geschwindigkeit durch das Seil.
Das kleine Element der Länge Δx schwingt aufgrund der Rückstellkraft des Seils senkrecht zur Wellenbewegung.
Die Kraft an jedem Ende ist tangential zum Seil.
Die Zugkräfte in den x-Richtungen haben die gleiche Größe und entgegengesetzte Richtungen, so dass sie sich aufheben.
Die Neigung des Seils an den Punkten x und x plus Δx bestimmt die Ausdrücke für die y-Komponenten der Kraft.
Die Kombination dieser Ausdrücke ergibt die Netto-y-Komponente der Kraft, die nach dem zweiten Newtonschen Gesetz gleich der Masse der Elemente multipliziert mit der y-Komponente der Beschleunigung ist.
Dividiert man durch T-Δ x und nimmt man den Grenzwert Δx als Null, erhält man den Ausdruck in der gleichen Form wie die lineare Wellengleichung.

Die Geschwindigkeit einer Welle hängt von den Eigenschaften des Mediums ab. Zum Beispiel vibrieren bei einer Gitarre die Saiten, um den Klang zu erzeugen. Die Geschwindigkeit der Wellen auf den Saiten und die Wellenlänge bestimmen die Frequenz des erzeugten Klangs. Die Saiten einer Gitarre haben unterschiedliche Dicken, können aber aus ähnlichem Material bestehen. Sie haben unterschiedliche lineare Dichten, und die lineare Dichte wird als Masse pro Länge definiert.

Eine der wichtigsten Eigenschaften einer Welle ist die Wellengeschwindigkeit. Lichtwellen haben eine viel größere Ausbreitungsgeschwindigkeit als Schallwellen in der Luft. Aus diesem Grund sieht man einen Blitzschlag bevor man den Donner hört. Es ist wichtig, die Geschwindigkeit von Querwellen auf einer Saite zu verstehen, da diese Geschwindigkeit entscheidend ist für die Analyse von Saiteninstrumenten. Außerdem haben die Geschwindigkeiten vieler Arten von mechanischen Wellen den gleichen grundlegenden mathematischen Ausdruck wie die Geschwindigkeit von Wellen auf einer Saite. Die physikalischen Größen, die die Geschwindigkeit von Querwellen auf einer Saite bestimmen, sind die Spannung in der Saite und ihre Masse pro Längeneinheit (auch als lineare Massendichte bezeichnet). The speed of transverse waves on a string depends on the string’s tension and its mass per unit length. A string with more tension has stronger restoring forces. Those forces help pull the string back to straight after it is disturbed, so the wave moves faster.

Mass per unit length is the mass of a string divided by its length. It is also called linear density. Strings on a guitar can have different thicknesses even when they are made of similar material, so they can have different linear densities.

Wave speed matters for stringed musical instruments because it helps determine the frequency of the sound produced along with wavelength. It also connects to other mechanical waves, since many of them follow the same main mathematical expression as waves on a string. Wave speed is a key property of any wave.

The idea of wave speed also explains real-world events. Light waves travel much faster than sound waves in air. That is why a flash from lightning is seen before the clap of thunder is heard.

Mechanical Waves in Air, Water, and Earth

Mechanical waves carry a disturbance through a medium. They repeat periodically and are often linked with simple harmonic motion. These waves follow Newton's laws and need a material medium to move through. A medium is the substance that carries the wave and provides an elastic restoring force when it is deformed. Water waves, sound waves, and seismic waves are examples of mechanical waves. In water waves, water is the medium. In sound waves, the medium is usually air, but it can also be water.
