Stellen Sie sich vor, dass Luft in einem Rohr eingeschlossen ist, das an einem Ende offen und am anderen geschlossen ist. Trifft eine Welle auf sie, reflektiert sie und erzeugt stehende Wellen.
Die Randbedingungen sind Antiknoten am offenen Ende, wo die Luftmoleküle frei schwingen können, und Knoten am geschlossenen Ende, wo sie es nicht sind.
Wenn beide Enden geschlossen wären, hätte der erste mögliche Modus Knoten an beiden Enden. Aber hier kann der erste mögliche Modus durch Dehnen dieses Musters erreicht werden. Die Länge der Röhre entspricht einem Viertel der Wellenlänge der Grundmode.
Für den ersten Oberton entspricht die Länge drei Vierteln der Wellenlänge. Für den zweiten Oberton beträgt er fünf Viertel der Wellenlänge und so weiter.
Es stellt sich also heraus, dass die Wellenlängen der stehenden Wellenmoden einem mathematischen Muster folgen, das durch n, eine ungerade ganze Zahl, gegeben ist.
Die entsprechenden Frequenzen, also die Oberschwingungen, erhalten man in Bezug auf die Wellengeschwindigkeit.

Der Ausgangspunkt zur Darstellung der Modi stehender Wellen liegt im Verständnis der Randbedingungen, denen die Wellen folgen müssen. Die Randbedingungen werden aus dem physikalischen Verständnis abgeleitet, wie die stehenden Wellen aufrechterhalten werden, das heißt, wie sich die schwingenden Teilchen des Mediums an den ihnen auferlegten Grenzen verhalten.

Für eine an einem Ende offene und am anderen Ende geschlossene mit Luft gefüllte Röhre sind die Modi so, dass es immer einen Knotenpunkt am geschlossenen Ende und einen Knotenpunkt am offenen Ende gibt. Interessanterweise hängen die Resonanzfrequenzen von der Schallgeschwindigkeit ab, die von der Temperatur abhängt. Dies kann bemerkbare Probleme verursachen, zum Beispiel für Orgeln in alten, unbeheizten Kathedralen. Deshalb bringen Musiker ihre Blasinstrumente in der Regel auf Raumtemperatur, bevor sie sie spielen.

Die Harmonischen für eine Röhre können ähnlich abgeleitet werden. Zuerst müssen die Randbedingungen beachtet werden; die Luftmoleküle können an beiden Enden schwingen. Standing wave modes in sound tubes depend on the boundary conditions at the ends of the tube. These boundary conditions describe how the air particles can move where the tube is open or closed. They set the pattern the standing wave must follow.

For a tube that is open at one end and closed at the other, the air has an antinode at the open end and a node at the closed end. An antinode is a point of maximum motion, while a node is a point of no motion. The resonant frequencies of the tube also depend on the speed of sound, and the speed of sound depends on temperature.

This temperature effect can create problems in real life. Old unheated cathedrals can cause organ notes to shift because the air temperature changes. Musicians also let wind instruments reach room temperature before playing them.

The harmonics of a tube can be found in a similar way. If the air molecules are free to vibrate at both ends, then both ends are antinodes. In that case, the wavelength of each mode is an integer multiple of half the tube’s length. This pattern matches the harmonics of a standing wave on a string, where both ends are nodes.

Mechanical waves carry a disturbance through a medium. They repeat periodically and are often linked with simple harmonic motion. These waves follow Newton's laws and need a material medium to move through. A medium is the substance that carries the wave and provides an elastic restoring force when it is deformed. Water waves, sound waves, and seismic waves are examples of mechanical waves. In water waves, water is the medium. In sound waves, the medium is usually air, but it can also be water.
