Wenn ein Festkörper in eine Flüssigkeit getaucht wirdeintaucht, wird verformt sich die Oberfläche der Flüssigkeit in der Nähe des Kontakts Gekr dem .Konakt. Für manche Grenzflächen zwischen Festkörper und Flüssigkeit wird die Flüssigkeit entlang des Festkörpers hochgezogen, während sie bei anderen Grenzflächen konvex oder eingedrückt ist. Dieses Phänomen lässt sich mithilfe des Konzepts der kohäsiven und adhäsiven Kräfte erklären.

Die adhäsive Kraft ist die molekulare Kraft zwischen Molekülen verschiedener Materialien, also zwischen den Molekülen des Festkörpers und der Flüssigkeit. Die kohäsive Kraft hingegen ist die molekulare Kraft zwischen Molekülen desselben Materials – in diesem Zusammeischen den Molekülen der Flüssigkeit derselben Art.

Der Kontaktwinkel ist der Winkel zwischen den Tangenten an den Festkörper- und die Flüssigkeitsoberfläche. Er wird so gezeichnet, dass die Tangente an den Festkörper zur Flüssigkeit zeigt und die Tangente an die Flüssigkeit vom Festkörper weg zeigt. Der Kontaktwinkel ist spitz, wenn die Flüssigkeit entlang der Festkörperoberfläche ansteigt, und stumpf, wenn die Flüssigkeit eingedrückt ist.

Der Kontaktwinkel hängt von der resultierenden Kraft auf den kleinen Teil der Flüssigkeit in der Nähe des Kontakts ab. Die Kräfte daraufen die adhäsive Kraft des Festkörpers, die normalerweise anziehend istwir die kohäsive Kraft der Moleküle in der Nähe der Oberfläche und ihr Gewicht. Wetting and surface curvature describe how a liquid behaves where it meets a solid. When a solid is dipped into a liquid, the liquid surface can bend near the contact line. In some cases, the liquid rises along the solid. In others, the surface becomes convex or depressed near the solid.

This behavior comes from cohesive and adhesive forces. Adhesive force is the attraction between molecules of different materials, such as a solid and a liquid. Cohesive force is the attraction between molecules of the same material, such as liquid molecules of the same species. The balance between these forces helps set the shape of the liquid near the solid.

The contact angle is the angle between the tangent planes at the solid surface and the liquid surface. It is measured with the tangent to the solid toward the liquid and the tangent to the liquid away from the solid. The contact angle is acute when the liquid climbs up the solid surface. It is obtuse when the liquid is depressed near the solid.

The angle depends on the net force acting on the small region of liquid near the contact. That region is affected by the solid's adhesive force, which is usually attractive, the cohesive force from nearby liquid molecules, and the liquid's weight. The liquid settles so that it is perpendicular to the resultant force. Because these forces depend on the materials involved, the contact angle changes with each solid-liquid pair.

This idea is similar to friction, since it depends on the surfaces in contact. Measuring the contact angle gives a practical way to judge interfacial strength and interactions between a solid and a liquid. It is useful in surface science, material science, and engineering.
