Problem-Solving: Tuning of a Guitar String

Eine sechssaitige Gitarre mit einer effektiven Standardsaitenlänge spielt die Grundfrequenz, wenn die tiefe E-Saite gezupft wird. Wie hoch ist die Spannung in der tiefen E-Saite, wenn ihre lineare Dichte bekannt ist?
Die Grundwellenlänge ist doppelt so groß wie die effektive Saitenlänge.
Die Wellengeschwindigkeit ist die Grundwellenlänge multipliziert mit der Grundfrequenz.
Die Spannung des Strings ist nun die lineare Massendichte des Strings multipliziert mit dem Quadrat der Wellengeschwindigkeit.
Der Ausdruck für die Wellengeschwindigkeit wird in der Zuggleichung eingesetzt.

Dies wird einfach lineare Dichte genannt. Wenn die lineare Dichte entlang der Saite konstant ist, dann t sich die lineare Dichte einfach durch die Gesamtmasse geteilt durch die Gesamtlänge.

Die Wellengeschwindigkeit der Saite kann durch Variation der linearen Dichte reguliert werden. Spannung ist die aweitere Eigenschaft, die die Geschwindigkeit von transversalen Wellen entlang der Saite bestimmt.

Beachten Sie, dass die Grundfrequenz der Saite auch von der Länge der Saite abhängt. Wenn die Saite zum Beispiel an einem Bund gehalten wird, dann verringert sich ihre effektive Länge. Guitar string waves depend on linear mass density, tension, and string length. Linear mass density means the mass per unit length of the string. When the density stays constant along the string, it equals the total mass divided by the total length. Changing this linear density can change the wave speed.

Tension also affects the speed of transverse waves along a guitar string. The fundamental frequency of the string depends on its length as well. When a string is held on a fret, its effective length becomes shorter. This change in length raises the frequency.

The fret positions on a guitar are set so the notes follow a pattern that sounds pleasing to the human ear. These different frequencies are musical notes. As the effective length gets smaller, the notes move from lower to higher pitch. Different strings are also arranged and adjusted to follow a particular set of fundamental frequencies.

By playing different notes on the strings, a guitarist can produce different harmonics. That combination of harmonics is part of what makes guitar playing distinctive. The craft of playing the guitar comes from controlling these wave changes across the strings.

Mechanical Waves in Air, Water, and Earth

Mechanical waves carry a disturbance through a medium. They repeat periodically and are often linked with simple harmonic motion. These waves follow Newton's laws and need a material medium to move through. A medium is the substance that carries the wave and provides an elastic restoring force when it is deformed. Water waves, sound waves, and seismic waves are examples of mechanical waves. In water waves, water is the medium. In sound waves, the medium is usually air, but it can also be water.
