Eine Technik ist ein wissenschaftliches Prinzip, das ein bestimmtes Phänomen durch chemische Messungen rationalisiert.
Eine Methode ist die Adaption einer Technik zur Analyse einer bestimmten Stichprobe von Interesse.
Eine Prozedur ist eine Reihe von Anweisungen zum Durchführen der Analyse.
Ein Protokoll ist die strenge Richtlinie, die bei der Beschreibung des Verfahrens einzuhalten ist.
Analytische Methoden können in klassische und instrumentelle Methoden eingeteilt werden.
Bei klassischen Methoden wird die interessierende Komponente – der Analyt – durch nasschemische Prozesse wie Fällung, Extraktion oder Destillation vom Rest der Probenmatrix getrennt.
Alternativ werden mit instrumentellen Methoden die physikalischen Eigenschaften eines Analyten untersucht, wie z. B. Leitfähigkeit, Elektrodenpotential, Lichtabsorption oder -emission und das Masse-Ladungs-Verhältnis.
Die Auswahl der Analysemethode wird durch die Anforderungen an die Verfügbarkeit der Ausrüstung, die Genauigkeit, die Präzision, die Empfindlichkeit, die Selektivität, die Robustheit, die Kosten, die Analysezeit und den Umfang des Betriebs bestimmt.

Analytical methods follow a clear path from technique to protocol. In analytical chemistry, a technique is the scientific principle used to explain a chemical measurement. A method applies that technique to a sample of interest.

The next steps are procedure and protocol. A procedure gives the directions for carrying out the analysis with an analytical method. A protocol is the detailed set of guidelines for that procedure, and it should be followed closely to get the desired results.

Analytical methods are also grouped into classical and instrumental methods. Classical methods use wet chemical processes, such as precipitation, extraction, or distillation, to separate the analyte, or component of interest, from the matrix, or the rest of the sample. Instrumental methods use instruments to measure physical properties such as conductivity, electrode potential, mass-to-charge ratio, and absorption or emission of light.

The best method depends on several practical factors. These include accuracy, precision, sensitivity, selectivity, robustness, ruggedness, scale of operation, analysis time, equipment availability, and cost. Choosing the right analytical method means matching the test to the goal of the analysis.
