One of the three cyclical quality assurance activities, quality control, is an umbrella of activities to certify a system is under statistical control.
These activities include quality control charts, proficiency testing, documenting, and archiving.
A quality control chart is a consecutive plot of one characteristic of the analysis that can act as a qualitative indicator.
The specific analysis characteristic is compared to the known characteristic value of the reference material. An inspection of the analysis conditions is required when the measured value falls outside the range of controlled limits for a selected standard deviation from the reference value.
Proficiency testing is the analysis of performance across multiple laboratories. Each lab&#39;s result is compared to the mean of results from all labs as the reference or against a certified reference material. The variations from different laboratories are characterized by the z score.

An inspection is required if a measured value lies outside the range of controlled limits, typically defined as standard deviation from the reference value. If necessary, modifications to the analysis conditions are required to maintain statistical control of the system.
Proficiency testing is the simultaneous analysis undertaken across multiple laboratories. The mean of results obtained from all labs or a known standard reference value is used to compare the variation in the results from individual labs. The Z score estimates this deflection of values from the reference value.

Documentation and archiving are critical aspects of quality assurance that ensure transparency and traceability in the laboratory process. Every activity related to quality control and assurance should be properly documented, including sample custody, instrument calibration, standard operating procedures, and results. This process involves creating a comprehensive record that serves as a reference for future checks.

Each document must clearly trace back to the individual responsible for its creation or management. This often requires that documents be signed and dated by the person involved, adding accountability to the process. Proper documentation not only supports the statistical control of a system but also plays a key role in identifying variations in quality control processes. An accurate archive ensures that past data can be retrieved, assessed, and used to make informed decisions about future analyses.

One common tool is a quality control chart. This chart plots one or more analytical characteristics over time. The measured values are taken at different times during the analysis and compared with the known value of reference material. If a result falls outside the controlled limits, usually set by standard deviation from the reference value, the sample needs inspection. The analysis conditions may then be adjusted to keep the system under statistical control.

Proficiency testing is another quality control activity. It involves the same sample or analysis being run across multiple laboratories at the same time. The mean result from all labs, or a known standard reference value, is used to compare how much individual lab results vary. A Z score is then used to estimate how far each value is from the reference value.

Documentation and archiving are also critical in quality assurance. Every step related to quality control should be recorded, including sample custody, instrument calibration, standard operating procedures, and results.
