Qualitative Analysis

Unter qualitativer Analyse versteht man die Identifizierung von Elementen, Ionen oder Verbindungen in einer unbekannten Probe. Es ist die erste der drei Arten der Analyse, die auf der Hierarchie des Zwecks und der Art der benötigten Informationen basiert.
Die qualitative Analyse erfolgt mit klassischen und instrumentellen Methoden.
Die klassischen Methoden basieren auf dem wahrnehmbaren Ergebnis selektiver oder spezifischer chemischer Reaktionen, die mit den menschlichen Sinnen erkennbar sind.
Selektive Reaktionen haben eine gewisse Präferenz gegenüber dem Analyten im Vergleich zu den anderen Komponenten in der Probe. Im Gegensatz dazu treten spezifische Reaktionen nur mit dem Analyten auf.
Die Vorkonditionierung von Proben, wie z. B. Fällung oder Extraktion, erhöht die Selektivität einer Reaktion gegenüber dem Analyten.
Im Vergleich dazu messen die instrumentellen Methoden eine unterscheidbare physikalische Eigenschaft des Analyten. So weisen beispielsweise einzelne Peaks eines Infrarotspektrums auf eine bestimmte funktionelle Gruppe in der Probe hin.

Bei der qualitativen Analyse werden Elemente, Ionen oder Verbindungen in einer unbekannten Probe identifiziert. Sie ist die erste und grundlegendste Analyseart, die auf der Hierarchie analytischer Ziele basiert. Diese Hierarchie ist von Bedeutung, da sie einen strukturierten Ansatz für die wissenschaftliche Forschung bietet, wobei die qualitative Analyse als erster Schritt dient und wichtige Informationen liefert, bevor man zu quantitativen oder anderen Analyseformen übergeht.

Es gibt zwei Hauptansätze für die qualitative Analyse: klassische und instrumentelle Methoden. Klassische Methoden basieren auf beobachtbaren Ergebnissen spezifischer chemischer Reaktionen, die durch menschliche Sinne (z. B. Sehen oder Riechen) identifiziert werden können. Diese Reaktionen sind entweder selektiv, d. h. sie bevorzugen den Zielanalyten gegenüber anderen Komponenten, oder spezifisch, d. h. sie reagieren nur mit dem Analyten. Schritte zur Vorkonditionierung wie Niederschlag oder Extraktion können verwendet werden, um die Selektivität dieser Reaktionen zu verbessern. Beispielsweise wird bei einer Niederschlagsreaktion der Probe ein spezifisches Reagenz hinzugefügt, um einen Niederschlag zu bilden, der dann gefiltert und weiter analysiert werden kann.

Instrumentelle Methoden messen die einzigartigen physikalischen Eigenschaften des Analyten. Beispielsweise entsprechen bei der Infrarotspektroskopie (IR) bestimmte Peaks innerhalb eines Spektrums bestimmten funktionellen Gruppen, wodurch eine genaue Identifizierung der Verbindungen in der Probe möglich ist.

Sowohl klassische als auch instrumentelle Methoden bilden die Grundlage der qualitativen Analyse und bieten wichtige Werkzeuge zur Identifizierung unbekannter Komponenten in verschiedenen wissenschaftlichen Proben.

Qualitative analysis identifies the elements, ions, or compounds in an unknown sample. It is the first step in the hierarchy of analytical goals. That makes it the starting point for scientific study before quantitative analysis or other forms of analysis.

Two main approaches are used in qualitative analysis: classical methods and instrumental methods. Classical methods depend on the visible or sensory result of a chemical reaction, such as a color change, a precipitate, or even a smell. These reactions may be selective, meaning they favor the target analyte, or specific, meaning they react only with that analyte.

Classical analysis may also use preconditioning steps to improve selectivity. Precipitation and extraction are two examples of these steps. In a precipitation reaction, a reagent is added to form a solid precipitate. The precipitate can then be filtered and analyzed further.

Instrumental methods identify a sample by measuring its unique physical properties. Infrared, or IR, spectroscopy is one example. In IR spectroscopy, distinct peaks in a spectrum match specific functional groups, which helps identify compounds in the sample. Together, classical and instrumental methods provide the basic tools used to identify unknown components in scientific samples.
