Bei der Probenahme wird eine kleine Portion aus einem Schüttgut für die Analyse ausgewählt. Eine Probe ist dieser ausgewählte Teil, der das Schüttgut oder die Grundgesamtheit darstellt.
Das Material kann von verschiedenen Arten sein - fest, flüssig oder gasförmig, deren Zusammensetzung entweder homogen oder heterogen sein kann.
Bei einem homogenen Material reicht für die Analyse eine einzige entnommene Probe, die sogenannte Stichprobe, aus.
Bei heterogenem Material werden jedoch mehrere inkrementelle Proben aus den verschiedenen Teilen des Schüttguts ausgewählt und für die Analyse kombiniert. Dies wird als Bruttostichprobe bezeichnet.
Eine homogene Teilmenge der Bruttoprobe, die für die Laboranalyse geeignet ist, wird als Laborprobe bezeichnet. Ein Teil der Laborprobe, der analysiert wird, wird als Analysenprobe bezeichnet.
Die verschiedenen Stichprobenverfahren sind Zufalls-, Beurteilungs-, systematische, geschichtete und Cluster-Stichproben.
