Die Probenhandhabung umfasst zwei entscheidende Aspekte, um genaue Ergebnisse zu gewährleisten - Lagerung und Transport. 
Unter Transport versteht man den Prozess des Transports von Proben zum Labor, ohne dass sich ihre physikalischen oder chemischen Eigenschaften ändern. Während des Transports können je nach Beschaffenheit der Probe Konservierungstechniken wie Einfrieren und chemische Konservierung erforderlich sein, um Veränderungen zu verhindern.
So verhindert das Einfrieren beispielsweise den thermischen Abbau von temperaturempfindlichen Proben. Die Zugabe von chemischen Konservierungsstoffen wie antibakteriellen Mitteln zu Proben verhindert das mikrobielle Wachstum.
Im Labor ist die ordnungsgemäße Lagerung der Proben unerlässlich, um eine Verschlechterung der Proben zu verhindern. So werden beispielsweise thermisch labile Proben in verschlossenen Behältern verpackt, in Kühlschränken gelagert oder eingefroren.
Die lichtempfindlichen flüssigen Proben müssen in dunklen Umgebungen oder braunen Flaschen gelagert werden.

Proben sollten sorgfältig vom Entnahmeort zum Labor transportiert werden. Sie sollten ordnungsgemäß versiegelt und eindeutig beschriftet sein, um Kreuzkontaminationen zu vermeiden. Optimale Temperaturbedingungen sind während des Transports unerlässlich, um die Probenintegrität zu bewahren. Um den erforderlichen Temperaturbereich einzuhalten, kann die Verwendung von isolierten Behältern, Kühlakkus oder Kühlfahrzeugen notwendig sein.

Sobald die Proben das Labor erreichen, müssen je nach Probentyp geeignete Lagerungsbedingungen geschaffen werden. Biologische Proben müssen beispielsweise oft gekühlt oder tiefgefroren werden, während andere bei Raumtemperatur aufbewahrt werden können. Lichtempfindliche Proben müssen vor Sonnenlicht geschützt werden, was durch undurchsichtige Behälter oder das Einwickeln der Proben in lichtundurchlässige Materialien erreicht werden kann.

Konservierungstechniken variieren stark je nach Art der Probe. Bei der chemischen Konservierung können den Proben bestimmte Chemikalien zugesetzt werden, um mikrobielles Wachstum oder chemische Reaktionen zu verhindern, die die Probe verändern könnten. Wenn Blutproben entnommen werden, kann die Zugabe geeigneter Antikoagulanzien die Gerinnung verhindern und die Integrität der Zellkomponenten während der Lagerung bewahren.
